Hey everyone.
Here’s the Week 1 Boxscore and Wagering review.
FBS vs FBS match-ups only. Does NOT include Monday night game (Florida St vs BC).
Let’s go!
Boxscore review:
ACC
North Carolina 19 Minnesota 17 – Close game throughout….Gophers miss 46-yard FG to win the game as time expires….That’s an OUCHIE….UNC 4/4 on FG, Gophers 1/3…..Tar Heels 252-244 yard edge held Minnesota to 78 rush yards….They also booked five (!) sacks…..NOTE UNC starting QB Max Johnson suffered a broken leg injury and they’ll be rolling with Conner Harrell going forward.
Georgia 34 Clemson 3 – Bulldogs led 6-CACK at the half and then blew Clemson out in the 2nd half (28-3)…..447-189 yard edge, star RB T Etienne did not play for Dawgs.
Miami 41 Florida 17 – Yes, guy…..YOUR Miami Hurricanes with a blowout win….529-261 yd edge, QB Cam Ward made one bonehead mistake early but looked great the rest of the game….Note that Florida QB G Mertz got injured in 4Q and freshman DJ Lagway got in the game, didn’t look bad considering the circumstances….Mertz is apparently in concussion protocol as of Sunday news….Miami played almost the entire game without star DE R Bain who may miss a game or two with a soft tissue injury.
Vanderbilt 34 Virginia Tech 27 (OT) – What at time to be ALIVE!….The Dores rolled out to a 17-CACK lead, fell behind 27-20 with 4 min left, tied it up, and SHOCKED the WORLD in overtime!…..QB Diego Pavia continued to be magical and did it vs a good VT squad….397-371 yd edge for Virginia Tech but they were sacked four times and were (-1) in t/o margin.
Georgia Tech 35 Georgia St 12 – 499-360 yd edge, 225 rush yds, no letdown after beating Florida St
Pittsburgh 55 Kent St 24 – 567-212 yd edge, New Pitt passing attack looked pretty good, QB Nate Yarnell 333 yards, 3-1 TD to INT, Pitt had 5 sacks but allowed 4 (!)
Syracuse 38 Ohio 22 – Tough one for our LEAN CLUB losing by a point at -17 but it happens….Orange looked good on offense behind QB Kyle McCord (354, 4-1 TD-INT)….Problem was a run defense that got rolled for 255 (!) yards and Bobcats RB Anthony Tyus rolled for 200+ (!)…..Ohio may not have fallen off as much as we thought.
TCU 34 Stanford 27 – 457-286 yd edge for the Horned Frogs, QB Josh HOOVER 353, 2-0 TD to INT looked pretty good but they only rushed for 104Y…..Stanford got nothing going in the run game other than QB Ashton Daniels….TCU with a lot of mistakes and over 100 yards in penalties….Now it’s time for our first visit to SHAWSHANK PRISON and get a taste of the pain that degenerates had to deal with on Friday night….Thankfully, we were innocent bystanders for this game…..Stanford +9 ticket holders looking good up 24-20 with 7 min left! Great call! HC Troy Taylor is the next coming of Bill Belichick! Congrats Stanford backers….Uh oh….What’s this….TCU with back-to-back TDs….up 34-24 with under two minutes to play….Way to go TCU backers! Pulled one out of the fire…..Uh oh what’s this….Stanford driving….30 seconds left….FG is good…..34-27 final….Congrats Stanford backers again! …But wait! We get a DOUBLE SHAWSHANK call from this game…..The total is 59/60 ……Those under players sure are sharp! What a great call….20-17 after 3Q…..What could go wrong other than 34-24 with 30 seconds left and Stanford kicks a FG with 30 seconds remaining to make sure that the over hits….Total of 61….Congrats over backers! Under players feel like they’ve spent a week in THE HOLE.
Big 12
Arizona 61 New Mexico 39 – Wildcats were 31 point favs and were only up by 10 points midway thru the 3Q….Monster game for Arizona WR T McMillan 10-304 yards (!) and 4 TD….Cats allowed 211 rush yards.
Penn St 34 West Virginia 12 – Nice call for LEAN CLUB….457-246 yd edge, 222 rush yds, 235 pass…..And yes, we still think ADVANCED ANALYTICS GUY needs to appreciate Penn St QB Drew Allar a bit more…..WV held to 85 rush yards so it looks like the Nittany Lions’ run D will be nasty again this year.
Arizona St 48 Wyoming 7 – 499-118 (!) yard edge, 241 rush yds, 258 pass yards…..Two defensive TDs for Sun Devils
UNLV 27 Houston 7 – 311-259, nice day for the Rebels defense, QB play was sketchy from M Sluka 6/13 71 yards 2-1 TD to INT
Big Ten
Ohio St 52 Akron 6 – 404-177 yd edge, final score dressed-up by a pair of defensive TDs, was just 17-3 at the half, Buckeyes were +3 in t/o margin.
Michigan 30 Fresno St 10 – 269-244 yd edge….Something called a Davis Warren got the start at QB….15/25 118 yards 1-1 TD to INT, Fresno down 23-10 4Q driving for TD, Michigan 80+ yard pick six to ice the game, still no cover tho.
Nebraska 40 UTEP 7 – 507-205 yd edge, the FRESHMAN SPECIMEN Dylan Raiola looked good…..238 yds 2-0 TD to INT, yuuuge game with COACH PRIME and Colorado up next.
Wisconsin 28 Western Michigan 14 – Nice effort from the Broncos, actually led 14-13 early 4Q…..388-261 yd edge for Wisconsin, passing game looked meh, defense held a solid WM offense in check for the most part.
Maryland 50 Connecticut 7 – 629-310 yd edge for Terps in major blowout, QB B Edwards Jr 311 yards and 2 TD, 39 rush yards…That was Huskies’ toughest game and they should show better vs future opponents.
Indiana 31 FIU 7 – Sharp first game for the Curt Cignetti era….414-182 yd edge, 234 rush, 180 pass, 4 sacks.
UCLA 16 Hawaii 13 – Bruins down 10-CACK at the half, played much better in the 2nd half, late FG to break 13-13 tie, had 5 sacks.
Northwestern 13 Miami Ohio 6 – 328-261 yard edge for Cats, held Redhawks to 40 rush yards
Michigan St 16 Florida Atlantic 10 – Sparty was up 16-3 and inside the 10-yard line looking to essentially salt away the cover for us but they threw an INT, big return, 16-10 and not much happened after that…..293-248 yd edge for Michigan St and they had 7 sacks….FAU QB Cam Fancher didn’t do much thru the air and note that he had 25 (!) carries.
USC 27 LSU 20 – Yes, guy…..Trojans SHOCK the WORLD with a last second TD….Very entertaining and evenly-matched game…..Trojans with 450-421 yard edge….Tigers had 10 penalties for 99 yards and were (-1) in t/o margin…..Our first PEE INTO THE WIND selection in the weekly analysis pages comes thru easily with a taste of the ‘under’.
SEC
Oklahoma 51 Temple 3 – Just a 378-197 yd edge for Sooners and they took full advantage of SIX (!) turnovers by HOOT HOOT….Oklahoma held to 158 pass yds and a BEHIND THE CURTAIN STAT you won’t be able to find anywhere else….QB J Arnold just 5.6Y/attempt…..OL was a bit shaky…..Sooners won sack battle 6-3.
Texas 52 Colorado St 0 – big win for the Horns as they easily covered 33 point spread with Michigan on deck….545-192 yd edge for Texas, the PRODIGY Arch Manning got in the game late and threw his first TD pass.
ROLL TIDE 63 WKU 0 – WHOA, NELLIE….Great start for the Kalen DeBoer era…..600-145 yard edge….True freshman WR Ryan Williams really FLASHED for WATCH THE TAPE GUY……Two catches, both for yuuuge gainers and TDs…..ROLL TIDE averaged 9.2 YPP….Nugget from the intrepid Andy Staples….WKU’s TJ Finley became the 2nd QB in history to lose to the same opponent whilst the starting QB on three different FBS teams (JT Daniels is the other).
Notre Dame 23 Texas A&M 13 – Impressive win for the Irish!…356-246 yd edge (+2 in t/o margin) and their brand new OL didn’t give up a sack vs one of the best (on paper at least) DLs in the SEC….on the road in a night game at Kyle Field….ND secondary was outstanding….Tough beat for LEAN CLUB as Notre Dame slithered over the team total of 21.5 with 10 points in the final minutes including a gut-wrenching FG with 30 seconds left…..Texas A&M didn’t run off any clock or do anything with the ball down 20-13 and gave it up in their own end…..that’s bad….But they weren’t bad enough to let ND get a first down and run out the clock….That’s an OUCHIE….ha ha.
South Carolina 23 Old Dominion 19 – MISLEADING FINAL ALERT…..The COCKS were gifted a pair of TDs…..3 yard “drive” to start the game and a six yard drive to take the lead for good…..305-288 yd edge for Old Dominion (!)
Kentucky 31 Southern Miss 0 – Defense was STRONG LIKE BULL…..317-131 yard edge and held Golden Eagles to 5 (!) rushing yards…..Big game with South Cackalacky up next…..NOTE game was called with 10 minutes left, wagers canceled….Lightning strikes probably 270 miles away so everyone was sent home…..You can never be too safe!
AAC
UTSA 28 Kennesaw St 16 – solid effort for the Owls’ first game as an FBS program…..416-253 yd edge for Miners….Note that UTSA QB Owen McNown played well 340 yds, 3 TD…..However they had serious trouble on the ground….76 net rushing yds (5 sacks allowed) and just net 2.2 YPC.
North Texas 52 South Alabama 38 – Nice win for ML UNDERDOG CLUB……Down 19-14 at the half and then they LIT IT UP in the 2nd half scoring 38 points…..582-550 yd edge for South Alabama….Turnover battle was even…..Stats pretty even overall…Mean Green probably just more used to playing in crazy firefights…..1,132 (!) combined total yards.
James Madison 30 Charlotte 7 – 417-324 yd edge for JMU….Charlotte’s OL and offense looked horrible….4.3 YPA (!) for QB Max Brown.
CUSA
Coastal Carolina 55 Jacksonville St 27 – WHOA, NELLIE…..31-10 at half and it was never a game….555-357 yd edge for Chants….297 rush 258 pass….Jax St had 0 sacks (38 LY) and just 123 rush yds (237 YPG LY)….Starting QB L Smothers was horrible look for Tyler Huff to start the game next week vs LUA-VUH.
Sam Houston 34 Rice 14 – EAT ‘EM UP KATS!…..407-274 yd edge, took down a decent AAC team on the road with ease, new starting QB Hunter Watson 229 yds, 2 TD.

FILES…..Broncos’ star RB A Jeanty 20 carries for 267 (!) yards and 6 (!!) TDs….Ga Southern’s new QB JC French had good debut 322 yards, 2 TD…..Some SWEET BACKDOOR COVER ACTION for Georgia Southern backers….TD with 2 min left to cut lead to 11 (13 point dogs).
Nevada 28 Troy 26 – WHOA, NELLIE!….Pack with another good game and this time they finished the deal….Down 14-CACK but battled back….Troy scored late TD but Nevada stopped the two-point conversion to bag the victory….393-391 yd edge for Wolfpack.
Sun Belt

Betting review
Big plays
Michigan St -11.5 (L) – As is often the case, got theoretical line value, got as high as 14/14.5….Settled in the 13/13.5 area….Looked like a cover up 16-3 and looking for more as mentioned in Big Ten section but a HEINOUS turn of events turned diamonds into dust…..Could have gone either way but thought Sparty would put up more than 293Y.
Miami -2.5 (W) – Rocking chair winner.
Leans (small plays)
6-6
ML Underdog Parlay Club
Ya, BAY-BEE. Four out of five winners. Great start to the season for ML Underdog Club devotees. That’s lots of TICKEE TICKEE, WINNEE WINNEE! Had a few cool winning parlay $$ screenshots from members sent to me. Congrats! On to next week.
Season Win Total Club
Vanderbilt over 2.5 – YES, GUY, big upset win over the Hokies this one appears LOCKED away after one week.
Troy under 6.5 – Nevada takes ’em down BAY-BEE. Big game for the win total.
Hawaii over 5 – Lost by three to UCLA. Almost got home. Already have a win (1-1)
Connecticut over 4.5 – Lost as expected at Maryland, blown to bits tho.
Navy over 5.5 – Won as expected, offense looked good.
Temple under 2.5 – Slaughtered by Sooners. Offense is an abomination.
Michigan St over 4.5 – Won as hoped. Defense looked good. Offense not so much.
Indiana over 5.5 – Won as big favs.
Louisiana Tech under 5 – Took down an FCS team. That was their only free square.
FIU over 4 – Lost big on the road at Indiana as yuuuge underdogs.
Arkansas St over 6 – Fell behind an FCS team with a minute left but pulled it out of the fire with last second TD. Fortunate.
Arizona St under 4.5 – Blew Wyoming to bits. That was one of the few truly winnable games on the docket but they looked good.
Futures and Props Club
Miami to win the ACC at +450 looks like a decent grab.
Oregon to win the Big Ten? VERY shaky outing vs Idaho.
Alabama +750 and Ole Miss +800 to win SEC. It’s mighty early but they both looked phenomenal (vs TOMATO CANS, mind you).
Heisman update – Dart, Nico, and Milroe all got off to great starts. And how about our boy Miller Moss vs LSU? Let’s go!
It was great to see college football back! Enjoy the season, PLAY SAFE, and see you next week!
