Texas St Bobcats 2022 College Football Preview

2021 Recap
Record – 4-8
ATS – 7-5
The Bobcats had higher hopes last year than finishing 4-8 and losing to something known as Incarnate Word, but sadly, that’s what happened. They treated the San Marcos faithful to a thrilling 4-OT win over South Alabama, but other than that, the season was a non-eventful disappointment. Let’s see if there’s any reason for optimism heading into 2022.
Texas St Bobcats 2022 Outlook
OFFENSE
Texas St had trouble moving the ball LY (#104 FBS total offense) and didn’t exactly SCORE the FOOTBALL on a regular basis (23.1 PPG, #101 FBS). There will be new QBs leading the way in 2022 and that’s good news considering the poor play we witnessed LY (15-12 TD to INT, #113 pass efficiency). There’s good news to report as the Bobcats scooped up a fine QB in Layne Hatcher from Arkansas St (career 65-25 TD to INT) and he’ll be able to do good work with a senior-laden WR/TE group that returns basically everyone from 2021. They’ve got a decent 1-2 punch at RB and hopefully the underrated Calvin Hill (714, 5.6 LY) can get better blocking and blossom into a 1,000-yard back. We project improvement from the OL as four starters with good size return up front. We’d be surprised if the Bobcats aren’t markedly better on offense this year and the ACE in the HOLE just might be the depth pieces they’ve added via the transfer portal.
DEFENSE
The Bobcats have to figure out a way to get better on defense as they were mediocre yet again LY. They couldn’t stop the run (#101 FBS run D), struggled vs the pass (#113 pass efficiency D), and didn’t do a good job of getting to the QB (18 sacks, last Sun Belt). It’s hard to know how things will go this year given that only five starters return and they’re relying upon a yuuuge number of transfers to make a big difference. The DL has potential but they’ll need the combo of DE Jordan Revels and LB Isaiah Nixon (combined 7 sacks LY) to take a collective step forward. They’ve got senior leadership at LB but the secondary has to do a much better job of picking off passes as the Bobcats tallied an impossibly-low 3 INT in 2021 (#125 FBS). We’re optimistic for mild improvement but it’s a bit of a guessing game.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Things look fine as there’s plenty of continuity on hand and note that PK Seth Keller was a rock solid 14/17 on FG attempts LY (7-9, 40+).
Schedule Analysis
Overall – It’s definitely a docket they can handle. The only game that appears unwinnable is a road test at Baylor and most of their tough games are at home.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous is noted.

GUN to the HEAD we’d take a sprinkle on the under given the Bobcats’ recent history (see below) but it’s not like they have a schedule full of SEC teams.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:
This sure looks like a team with a head coach on the HOT SEAT so it’ll be interesting to see how the first month or so goes for these guys. We were too optimistic regarding their chances last year so we’re a little GUN-SHY when it comes to calling for improvement in 2022. There’s no doubt they’ll put a better product on the field but we’ll grudgingly call for four to five wins and a near-miss on bowl eligibility.
