What in the SAM HILL ?

Our Horny Toed Frogs slid to their 2nd losing season in four years after falling in the Liberty Bowl to Georgia. We are not used to seeing 6-7 from this team. And the wins ? A collection of virtual stiffs. South Dakota St, Iowa St, SMU, Kansas, Baylor and Texas. We were caught a bit off guard by this debacle but did have Oklahoma as a DOCUMENTED 2490578294038752904387 star STEAM MOVE when they visited Fort Worth.

2017 MEGALOCKS Opening Power Rating

Big 12 – TBD

OFFENSE

There was a bit of a power outage last season. Kenny Hill had his moments but also had a fairly miserable 17-13 TD to INT ratio. MEGALOCKS Big 12 INSIDERS predict a much better season in 2017. Hill has a loaded WR unit that returns a seemingly impossible TOP 9 from last season. They are experienced and talented. The running game should be really good with 1,000-yard man Kyle Hicks returning this season. Hicks is a yuuuuge part of the offense as he also snagged 47 receptions which was #1 on the team last season. The offensive line paved the way for 5.2 yards per carry but did yield 31 sacks. The big boys are more experienced (4/5 returning starters) and we anticipate improved production.

DEFENSE

That makes back-to-back seasons allowing 27+ points per game. Signals are pointing up for the Horned Frogs to get back to their normal selves on defense. Overall, 7 starters are back this season, and this is a group that has potential. The DL and LB group only have a couple of returning starters combined so that does worry us a bit. MLB Ty Summers is back and he had 121 tackles in 2016. The starting secondary returns intact and they only allowed 19 TD passes in the pass-happy Big 12 last year. Leading tackler S Travin Howard was a 1st team Big 12 performer in 2016.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The battle for the PK duties is still undecided. That has us a bit concerned. On the bright side KR / PR KaVonte Turbin is very dangerous.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot

September 16 – SMU. This is a home date sandwiched between games with Arkansas and Oklahoma St and TCU is sure to be laying a ton of points. Not saying. Just saying.

“TCU” won their first game in school history over something called Toby’s Business College by a score of 8-6.

There is a lot to like about this team. The offense looks like it will be a handful, particularly if they get a bit more out of the running game, and if Kenny Hill can avoid throwing baskets full of interceptions. The defense the past two seasons has been very “un-TCU-like” as they have yielded 28.0 and 27.2 points per game and their run defense has been gashed.

This is an experienced bunch. We like the potential. From an ATS perspective, the Horned Frogs are just 46% against the number over the past five seasons combined. We believe that is due in most part to the play of the defense, but also, people are aware that this is a solid program with great athletes and a fantastic head coach. Hard to find value. Pick your spots.
