Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2017 NCAA Football Preview

College Football Predictions – Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2017 NCAA Football Preview

2016 Recap

2016 Record – 10-2 (FCS)

2016 ATS – n/a

We are super PUMPED to be just over an hour from Conway, SC as this season preview goes to press.

Who is ready for some BALL AT THE BEACH ? Let’s go !

Coastal Carolina begins their FBS journey in 2017 after a really successful run in the FCS. The Chanticleers bagged 43 wins (!) over the past four seasons and made the FCS playoffs in two of those seasons. This team should be full of confidence as they enter the realm of big boy football.

2017 MEGALOCKS Opening Power Rating

Sun Belt – TBD

OFFENSE

It was a bit of fiasco at QB last season as the Chanticleers had four different starting QBs (due to injury, sucking, etc..) but they should have much better production in 2017 with Syracuse transfer Austin Wilson almost assured of the #1 job. MEGLAOCKS SUN BELT INSIDERS relayed that he looked very good during the spring. Chris Jones appears to be a fine target but the quality of the depth at WR is unclear. They will also be without their two leading rushers from the 2016 campaign. The offensive line did a great job last year paving the way for 5.2 yards per carry while only allowing 12 sacks, but this year, the step up in competition and lack of experience (2/5 returning starters) may lead to some bumps in the road. Overall, we feel like this offense will be successful against the bottom half of the conference, but they may struggle against the top-tier defenses. Time will tell.

DEFENSE

Coastal Carolina allowed twenty points or less in each of the past three campaigns. Six starters return on defense but they lose their leading tackler LB Alex Scearce who also led the team in sacks in 2016. It is really hard to say how this defense will fare with the step up in competition. Our best guess is that they end up finishing mid-pack (or slightly below) in total defense in the Sun Belt. They should hold up fairly well against all but the most potent offenses.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Chanticleers need to break in a new PK this season. P Evan Rabon did a decent job in 2016. The return units may take a step back given the increased speed and talent they will contend with from opposing coverage units.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot

Oct 21 – at Appalachian St. This will be their 3rd road test in four weeks and Appalachian St is a really tough place to win a football game. They will be huge underdogs but the spread will probably not be big enough for us to get interested in taking a taste of of road team.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

You have seen the Smurf Turf in Boise – well everyone – welcome to the SURF TURF ! All teal, all day, baby. Awesome.

MEGALOCKS ATS Value Rating (10)          5.0

MEGALOCKS says:

Overall, we give the CHANTICLEERS a 5.0 ATS Value Rating (Average) this season.

Coastal Carolina should have no problem being competitive in over half of their games this season. They are a confident bunch and very well-coached. The trouble with giving them an ATS Value Rating is the difficulty in knowing how they will handle the week-to-week grind of FBS football. Depth may end up being an issue. In any event, we predict that the Chanticleers will win at least four games and end up close to .500 ATS when the dust settles on the season. GOOD LUCK CHANTICLEERS !
