College Football Week 1 in Review!

Hey, everyone!

The first full Saturday of college football did not fail to disappoint. Excitement. Upsets. Big-time performances. Take a read and get caught up on week one AND get ready for another set of great games this Saturday.

The BIG games

Auburn 21 Washington 16

Entertaining and intense game that could have gone either way. Washington made more mistakes and that was ultimately the difference in the outcome. Washington needs to reel off 10+ wins in their last 11 regular season games and win the PAC 12 to get into the playoff. Auburn served notice that they are not ready to concede the SEC West (yup, they won it LY) just yet.

Notre Dame 24 Michigan 17

We thought Michigan would win this game. Oops. Instead of focusing on the outlook for Michigan we are MORE interested in thinking about the possibilities for Notre Dame. They have a really tough schedule ahead but escaped one of their toughest games on the docket with a big win. They were more prepared and took advantage (in our estimation) of a poor defensive game plan by the Wolverines. The total yards ended up being close but the Irish were clearly the better team on Saturday.

LSU 33 Miami 17

The demise of the Tigers was apparently greatly exaggerated. They laid a smack-down on the Hurricanes and served notice that they will also be a tough out in the rugged SEC West. Miami was clearly a notch-below the top-tier of college football before this game. Are they two notches below as we go to press this week?

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 1 (yes, Florida St / Virginia Tech is still on deck for tonight)

This is how we rank the teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site.

  1. ROLL TIDE – They dismantled a decent Louisville team on Saturday (51-14). And now they have the ability to kill you with the pass AND the run. Awesome.
  2. Clemson – Won their scrimmage with Furman. Tough road game with Texas A&M on deck.
  3. Georgia – 45-0 tune-up win over Austin Peay. It gets real this week at South Carolina.
  4. Ohio St – Not sure they needed to score in the 70s this week but that’s what they do. They get an improving Rutgers squad in week two but it should be another body bag game.
  5. Oklahoma – They destroyed the FIGHTING KIFFINS of Florida Atlantic on Saturday (led 42-0 at the half) and could score another 60+ vs UCLA on Saturday

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

Auburn – Showed guts this week vs the Huskies. A lot of tough games left on the docket.

Mississippi St – Run silent, run deep. ROLL TIDE, Auburn, LSU getting the attention in the SEC West.

TCU – New starting QB with 5 total TDs this week in scrimmage vs Southern.

Washington – Toe to toe with Auburn. Still loaded with talent.

Wisconsin – Made short work of WKU in week one.

On the bubble……Notre Dame, Stanford, West Virginia

Who looked better than we anticipated?

Colorado – maybe Colorado St is just flat out horrible? The Buffs have a QB, that’s for sure.

Oklahoma – particularly the defense. It’s was just one game, but they smothered an FAU offense that scored about 289 points per game last season. Per half.

Washington St – the wacky PIRATE Mike Leach has ANOTHER QB. Gardner Minshew played well in a tough environment.

BYU – Did a number on Heisman hopeful QB Khalil Tate. Displayed a tough and nasty attitude.

Hawaii – It’s old news by now. These guys are going to be a handful and QB Cole McDonald is an emerging star who could put up video game numbers if he stays healthy.

Rice – Don’t laugh. The Stanford pedigree and offensive style paid dividends in week one as they led Houston at the half. They need more athletes but we like what we saw on Saturday. They will only bag a few wins this season but they may have enough to SHOCK the WORLD at some point.

Hit the panic button?

Ohio – Squeaked out a win vs something called Howard and QB Nathan Rourke saw only limited action. Oh, boy. The MAC is there for the taking and now this? Tell me there will be no musical QBs in Athens.

Navy – Got torn to shreds by Hawaii. Not an ideal spot but they were down 28-0 before people got in their seats.

Old Dominion – Liberty was a LIVE UNDERDOG in week one but they mopped the floor with the Monarchs (W 52-10). Yup, that happened.

Just like we thought! (always a short list. just kidding. not really.)

TCU – Like them as a serious Big 12 player and their new QB looked good in week one.

Utah – Held Weber St to 59 yards and are one of most balanced teams in college football.

Northwestern – Gutted out a hard fought road win over Purdue.

Boston College – Beat a sneaky-good Massachusetts team easily and QB Anthony Brown looks fully recovered from his injury.

Texas – It’s only one game but back-to-back season opening losses to Maryland? Did not understand the love for these guys to make the playoff. Still plenty of time to recover but the alarm bells have to be going RINGY DINGY DINGY.

Penn St – Escaped with an overtime win over Appalachian St. A lot of roster turnover and it showed in week one.

FUN Facts, Random Stuff

Why do we love college football? Well there are well over a thousand reasons and ONE of them is the enjoyment we get from watching the young men have fun. Miami introduced the Turnover Chain last season. Now Boise St has the TURNOVER THRONE! Too awesome. Bag a fumble recovery or an interception and sit in the TURNOVER THRONE (worst piece of furniture ever) on the sidelines whilst your teammates worship you!

Want more? The Ole Miss WR group is AMAZING and have the NWO BELT (Nasty Wide Outs) that can be fastened to your waist after a TD grab.

Texas Tech WR TJ Vasher is going to be on the ESPN Top-10 every Saturday. Amazing hands and body control.

Michigan is 9-9 in their last 18 games.

Our bottom three? UTEP, Texas St and San Jose St.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEEK!!

Enjoy week 2.
