College Football Predictions – Vanderbilt Commodores 2020 College Football Preview
2019 Recap
Record – 3-9
ATS – 3-9
RUH ROH.
The Commodores struggled in a big way and only managed to bag three wins during the campaign (Northern Illinois, Missouri, East Tenn St). That was their lowest win total since Derek Mason took over the head coaching duties in 2014. Worse news? They’re weren’t many close calls. Let’s check in with the 2020 squad and see if there is hope for improvement.
2020 MEGALOCKS Opening Power Rating
East Division – #7
SEC – #14
Vanderbilt Commodores 2020 Outlook
OFFENSE
EWWW.
The Commodores averaged a paltry 16.5 PPG which was the first time they’ve tallied fewer than 20 PPG since the 2015 season. Despite the efforts of departed star RB K Vaughn (1,028, 9 TD) they couldn’t get anything going with the THROW GAME due to poor QB play. True freshman QB Ken Seals gets the keys to the offense this year (!) and it’s unclear what they have in the RB room. The WR group appears to be weak on paper and note that several key OL have opted out of the 2020 season. We expect another weak performance from the offense.
DEFENSE
Vanderbilt didn’t get much help from the offense LY and booked a 2nd consecutive season in which they allowed 430+ YPG. They’ve allowed 5.0+ YPC on the ground in each of last three years so it begs the question, are we headed into another long stretch of horrible Vandy teams? The good news is that the Dores bring back 10 returning starters on D including their top-5 tacklers from a season ago. LB Dimitri Moore is an excellent building block and hopefully new DC Ted Roof can utilize the experience on hand to craft a better defense. We predict a better showing in 2020.
SPECIAL TEAMS
It’s almost a complete reload on special teams other than P H Smith. Note that PK R Guay hit 9/11 FG attempts LY.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – They don’t draw ROLL TIDE or Auburn from the revised Scamdemic schedule, so that’s a plus. It’s still a lot to ask for this squad to navigate the SEC.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.
Season Win Total

MEGALOCKS says:
TBD
MEGAmazing Tidbits
Derek Mason’s record at Vanderbilt is 27-47 (.365) whilst the Commodores all-time record is 609-629-50 (.492).
MEGALOCKS Outlook:
It looks like another long year in Nashville. The Commodores are always at a “talent” disadvantage but it might be more of a hill to climb in 2020. The defense should be good enough to keep them within the number in many games from an ATS perspective but we don’t see them winning more than two games.
