BYU Cougars 2022 College Football Preview
June 21, 2022
2021 Recap
Record – 10-3
ATS – 5-8
Yes, guy.
The Cougars booked their 2nd double-digit win season and were a very tough squad to deal with even after losing former star QB Zach Wilson to the NFL. They stubbed their toes mid-season losing a pair of games in a row (Boise St, Baylor) but finished on a five-game HEEEETER to end the regular season. They posted wins over Utah (!), Arizona St, and USC.
The season ended on a bit of a sour note with a loss to UAB in a very entertaining Independence Bowl, but we suppose you can’t have everything. AMIRITE? Let’s see how things look heading into 2022.
BYU Cougars 2022 Outlook
OFFENSE
The Cougars were balanced and productive LY (#17 FBS total offense, #37 rush, #12 passing efficiency) and got a great performance out of QB Jaren Hall (20-5 TD to INT, 307 rush) who’s back for duty in 2022. The WR room is in fine shape with the return of their top-two WRs in Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney (combined 1,399 yards, 9 TD LY), and don’t sleep on WR Keanu Hill (19.1 YPC) and TE Issac Tex. Losing the great RB Tyler Allgeier (1,601, 23 TD, 5.8, 28 receptions) is a kick in the WEDDING TACKLE so job #1 on offense is finding a replacement or three for that production. It’s unclear if they have a true monster at RB but Cal transfer Christopher Brooks may get the first shot at being THE GUY. They should be great up front (again) with the return of four starters to an experienced and talented operation.
DEFENSE
Fraudulent “FACT CHECKERS” across the globe have been trying to confirm if BYU does indeed have 11 starters returning on defense. While we wait for their 100%-TO-BE-INCORRECT assessment, let’s roll with Phil Steele and state that they are indeed bringing back their entire starting defense. They look good at every level of the defense and the LB group looks particularly stout. They also have three senior starters in the back end. Adding CB Gabe Jeudy-Lally from Vanderbilt can only improve the situation. The only bone to pick is with a pass rush that tallied a mere 20 sacks in 13G in 2021. They haven’t had more than 29 since 2015.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Things look decent. There’s continuity across the board and hopefully PK Jacob Oldroyd can be better from medium to long-range (9-13 FG, 2-5 40+ LY).
Schedule Analysis
Overall – It’s pretty nasty. There are a couple of layups but overall it’s a a tough challenge from start to finish.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – October 29th – Utah St
This is a CIRCLED game for Utah St and note that BYU has the Irish on deck.
Season Win Total
Over 8.5 +115
Under 8.5 -145
MEGALOCKS says:
No leanage.
We like the look of this team but that schedule doesn’t allow much room for error. GUN TO THE HEAD selection would be the ‘over’, especially if you can find an “8”.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
HC Kalani Sitake is an EYE-POPPING 11-3 ATS as a road underdog.
Who doesn’t love COUGARS?
MEGALOCKS Outlook:
Yup. These guys are gonna be more fun than a BARREL OF MONKEYS. They’re talented across the board and will provide us with some fun match-ups over the course of the season. We’ll call for 8-9 wins and another successful season. Then it’s Big 12 time in 2023, baby!
