2024 Recap
Record – 6-7
ATS – 6-7
“You are what your record says you are.”
<Bill Parcells>
Coach Parcells probably said that while he was waterboarding a few players after a tough loss, or maybe after a win, who really knows? The important point is that he might have been looking into the future and talking about the 2024 Virginia Tech Hokies. They started the season 5-4 but weren’t far off from being 9-0. Every one of those four losses was by one score, two of them were in OT, and one of them was courtesy of cheating refs helping out YOUR Miami Hurricanes ****. Virginia Tech needed to win the final game of the regular season just to get a bowl invite, and whilst they met that goal they were smoked by Minnesota in the Mayo Bowl.
**** That’s a shame.
Virginia Tech Hokies 2025 Outlook
OFFENSE
The Hokies were a balanced outfit LY (178 YPG rush, 189 YPG pass) but they were inconsistent from week to week due in large part to the injuries sustained by starting QB Kyron Drones (10-6 TD to INT, 6 rush TD). Drones is back to lead the offense and he’s a dangerous dual-threat specimen when healthy. We’re not thrilled with the situation at RB after the loss of All-MEGALOCKS Team member RB Bhayshul Tuten (1,159, 6.3, 15 TD) who was one of the most explosive RBs in college football LY, but at least the Hokies picked up a pair of solid doods thru the portal in Terion Stewart (898, 6 TD; Bowling Green LY) and Braydon Bennett (781, 11 TD; Coastal Carolina). We’re even less thrilled with the WR room as the Hokies need to completely rebuild but at least they retain productive TE Benji Gosnell (341, 10.7, 2 TD). Snagging WR Donovan Greene from Wake Forest was a nice move but we don’t love the depth in the unit. The offensive line could be a problem area given the departure of four starters and recall that Virginia Tech allowed 34 sacks LY (#107). It appears that new OC Philip Montgomery has some work to do.
DEFENSE
It was another strong season for the Hokies’ stop unit, and FUN FACT, Virginia Tech allowed a mere 22.8 PPG (#39) and improved in that particular metric for the 4th straight season. The LB group will COOK this year behind the leadership of Jaden Keller (#1 tackles) and Caleb Woodson (#2 tackles, 7.5 TFL) but there’s a yuuuge hole up front after the departure of AA DE Antwaun Powell-Ryland who tallied an impossible 16 (!) sacks and 9 QBH LY. The Hokies grabbed a talented pair of DEs thru the portal in James Djonkam (Eastern Michigan) and Ben Bell (Texas St, 10 sacks in 2023) but it’ll be interesting to see how those guys adapt to the rise in class from the Group of Five conferences. The primary concern on defense is a secondary that needs to be rebuilt after being tight vs the pass LY (#41 pass efficiency D, 55%, 20-15 TD to INT).
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Hokies clocked in at an impressive #16 in the Phil Steele special teams rankings LY but they must replace their punter, primary KR, and PR Jaylin Lane (10.2, TD). On a positive note, they’ve got one of the best PKs in the ACC in Josh Love (16/18 FG, 42/42 XP LY).
Schedule Analysis
Overall – The Hokies start with a tough neutral site clash vs mighty South Carolina but they should be able to win the next three games. They’ve got a favorable ACC schedule as they miss Clemson and SMU, and they get to face Miami and LUA-VUH in Blacksburg.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous is noted.

MEGALOCKS says:
No leanage.
We like the way the schedule sets up but they’re missing quite a few key components from last year’s squad. It’s probably ‘over’ or pass, and we’ll take a seat for now.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
DEGENERATE NATION should be aware that HC Brent Pry has been very good vs the point spread in ACC games (14-9 ATS, 61%) but he doesn’t seem to care much about non-conference action (4-10 ATS, 29%).
Speaking of your boy Brent Pry, he’s just 5-13 (!) in road games during his tenure with Virginia Tech. Not good, yo. #HOTSEAT
Virginia Tech won three of the first six ACC Championship Games (2007, 2008, 2010) under the tutelage of the legendary Frank Beamer and that was the last time they took down the conference title.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
The Hokies were well-positioned last year to make a big run in the ACC but they were STYMIED in large part by some bad luck and the injury bug. The roster looks a bit weaker overall heading into 2025 and it’s not great news for anyone in the ACC that Clemson has the potential to be a monster this year. The schedule should help them stay in contention until November and then we’ll see what they’re all about. This is almost certainly a bowl team in our estimation but we don’t think they’ve got enough firepower to be serious contenders in the ACC this season. In any event, good luck to the Hokies and GOBBLE GOBBLE!
