Troy Trojans 2025 College Football Preview

2024 Recap

Record – 4-8

ATS – 6-6

We thought it might be a tough season for the Trojans, and indeed it was. Troy was coming off back-to-back (!!) Sun Belt Championships but were rolling with a completely revamped roster and a new head coach. The Trojans lost seven of their first eight games but started to find their footing in the last third of the season. They bagged three wins in November and those included conquests over a pair of bowl teams (Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern).

Can the Trojans continue that late season momentum into 2025?

Troy Trojans 2025 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Trojans were a MILQUETOAST outfit in 2024 (#75 rushing offense, #83 passing) and a large part of that was due to the constant injuries at the QB position. The offense just couldn’t get into a consistent rhythm from week to week. Things look good at QB heading into this season with the return of GOOSE Crowder (69%, 5-0 TD to INT) and Tucker Kilcrease (55%, 3-1 TD to INT) as both guys got a good dose of playing time in 2024. There’s a yuuuge void at RB to be filled given the departure of 1,000-yard RB Damien Taylor (5.8, 7 TD) and backup Gerald Green (545, 3 TD) but Troy believes they have a legit #1 RB in Trey Cooley who comes over from Georgia Tech, and there are some interesting depth pieces as well. Almost all of the WR/TE production from LY is gone including star WR Devonte Ross (1,043, 11 TD; to Penn St) and Troy will need a few of the many transfers they picked up in the offseason to produce right away. Maybe Rara Thomas (Georgia, Miss St)(!) can be a difference maker? The OL appears to be in good shape as the unit has good size and boasts over 50 career starts. This doesn’t look like an overwhelming offense by any means but it should be balanced and productive, particularly in Sun Belt action.

DEFENSE

The defense struggled mightily LY as they allowed the most PPG (28.4, #91) since the 2019 campaign and the main culprits were the pass defense (#71 pass efficiency defense) and lack of PENETRATION (19 sacks, #108). The DL looks decent as they’ve got a lot of upperclassmen and enough experience to make things work, and we really like the addition of South Carolina transfer Elijah Davis who should help the Trojans generate heat on the QB. The LB unit is solid with the return of Jordan Stringer (#2 tackles) and Steven Cattledge, and the secondary will improve with the addition of safety David Daniel-Sisavanh (Georgia) and CB Kaleno Levine. Troy already looked very strong at the safety position, and overall, we expect much better things from the defense in 2025.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Trojans need to replace ace KR/PR Devonte Ross and punter Robert Cole but at least they retain PK Scott Taylor Renfroe who had a strong 2024 season (11/13 FG, 34/36 XP).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The Trojans get to open the season at 1-0 thanks to a home opener vs something known as Nicholls but the rest of the non-conference slate is tough overall (at Clemson, Memphis, at Buffalo). On a positive note, they’ve inherited a sweet draw from the East (at ODU, Georgia St) and the November schedule is pretty soft.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at ULM (Oct 18)

This matchup falls after important games vs South Alabama (H) and Texas St (A) and before another stern test (Louisiana). The Warhawks are a scrappy bunch and we don’t think we’ll be backing the road team in this spot.

Season Win Total

Market consensus June 14

Over 5.5 -145

Under 5.5 +115

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

This has the look of a bowl team and they should be able to pick off two or three wins in November to get there if needed.

Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Trojans are 41-19 at home (.683) over the L10Y but DEGENERATE NATION should be aware that they’re just 25-34-1 (.424) at home vs the point spread over that time span.

Troy is located in the GREAT STATE of ALABAMA and is well-known for the annual Pike Piddlers Storytelling Festival. This year’s compilation of entertaining fiction included such gems as, “Men can get pregnant”, “The Death Jab is Safe and Effective”, and “Bill Gates Loves Humanity”. ****

**** The agenda needs a fact check but it appears legit according to our editorial board.

MEGALOCKS Forecast:

It was a struggle last season during year one of the Gerad Parker regime but don’t be fooled, that team was ripped apart by departures, and this year’s roster looks more typical of what we usually see from Troy football.  The first half of the FUN BELT schedule is much tougher than the back end so if they can find a way to stay in the division race until November then it just might be GAME ON. We’ll call for six or seven wins and a return to a bowl game.
