Georgia Southern Eagles 2026 College Football Preview
Posted June 6, 2026
2025 Recap
Record – 7-6
ATS – 7-5-1
The Eagles got off to a brutal start, dropping their first two games to Fresno State and USC whilst surrendering a combined 101 points. They eventually found their footing and finished 6–6 in Sun Belt play before capping the season with a satisfying win over Appalachian State in the Birmingham Bowl to end the year at 7–6.
Not the prettiest campaign, but a bowl win is still a bowl win. Clay Helton has now reached the postseason in each of his first four years in Statesboro. The question heading into Year 5 is whether he can finally push the Eagles into Sun Belt title contention.
Georgia Southern Eagles 2026 Outlook
OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):
- Scoring: 27.9 PPG (#6 Sun Belt)
- Total Offense: 401.5 YPG (#6 Sun Belt)
- Rushing: 154.2 YPG (#9 Sun Belt)
- Passing: 247.4 YPG (#6 Sun Belt)
- Sacks Allowed: 30 (#12 Sun Belt)
The biggest offseason news in Statesboro is the arrival of QB Max Johnson — and yes, it seems impossible but the man is STILL playing college football. Johnson has bounced around (UNC, Texas A&M, LSU) but the resume is legit — over 6,000 career passing yards and a 49-13 TD to INT ratio. If he’s healthy and motivated this will be a genuine upgrade under center. Keep an eye on sophomore Weston Bryan who looked sharp in the spring and could push for playing time.
At running back, the Eagles will go with a committee approach after losing 1,000-yard rusher OJ Arnold. Leading returner David Mbadinga (196 yards, 1 TD last year) will share the workload with veteran Terrance Gibbs, a versatile piece who has been with the program since 2022.
The wide receiver room took a major hit after losing its top three producers from last season — a trio that combined for 2,382 yards and 22 touchdowns. That group included Camden Brown, who posted a breakout 65‑1,079‑14 line before trying his hand in the NFL (How ’bout dem Cowboys!). The portal additions bring size and upside, most notably 6‑5 Ashton Hollins (Illinois) and Kam Mikell (Colorado), two intriguing pieces who should help stabilize the room and give Max Johnson some much‑needed big‑bodied targets.
Up front, the offensive line should be improved. Veterans Caelan Williams (in his 7th year) and Matthew Williams anchor a big, experienced group that added more size through the portal. Improving pass protection and reducing sacks allowed will be a key focus.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):
- Scoring Defense: 32.3 PPG (#12 Sun Belt)
- Total Defense: 458.5 YPG (#14 Sun Belt)
- Rush Defense: 218.1 YPG (#14 Sun Belt)
- Pass Defense: 240.5 YPG (#10 Sun Belt)
- Sacks: 12 (#13 Sun Belt, tied for last)
Those numbers were REVOLTING — dead last in the Sun Belt in total defense, rush defense, and sacks. That run defense (218.1 YPG) wasn’t just bad… it was an absolute embarrassment (#133 FBS). Fans hadn’t felt that sick since watching The MANDALORIAN and GROGU. Fixing the toughness vs the run is Priority #1 for new DC Mike Mutz.
Here’s the good news though — this is actually a STRONG hire. Mutz just came off a monster year at Stephen F. Austin, where he was in the conversation for FCS Coordinator of the Year after running one of the most disruptive defenses in the country (they led the FCS in TFLs). And get this — he was already on staff at Georgia Southern back in 2014-2015 under Willie Fritz when the Eagles won the Sun Belt title. The man knows the program and knows what it takes to win in this league.
Up front, the DL is thin on proven talent. DT Caleb Moore is one of the few returning starters, while 365-pound Latrell Bullard brings some real beef inside. There are a lot of new faces though, so projecting this group is tough. At linebacker, Brandon Tyson (#2 tackles) gives them a steady presence, and MTSU transfer Anthony Bynum has a chance to make an impact. The secondary is basically being rebuilt from scratch, with CB Tracy Hill Jr. as the lone returning starter. Mutz wants to play more aggressive, attacking football back there — which is encouraging — but there are still plenty of question marks.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The PK competition is ongoing between holdover Tripp Bryant (17/20 FG LY) and WOO PIG transfer Blake Ford. That battle could run deep into fall camp. Ace punter Alex Smith (6‑6, 220) is back in the mix, and that’s a stabilizer for a unit that needs one.
Schedule Analysis
Overall — The non‑conference schedule has some bite — a road trip to Clemson and a home date with Houston will be tough sledding, and the trip to Jacksonville St is no picnic either given the Gamecocks will be JACKED UP for revenge after last year’s loss (see below). The Sun Belt West draw is challenging (Troy, Louisiana Tech), but the home/away split in league play is manageable. And yes — the November 14th rivalry showdown with Georgia St in Atlanta is circled on every calendar in Statesboro.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot — at Jacksonville St (Sept 19)
A dirty little sandwich spot — the Eagles come off a road beating at the hands of mighty Clemson and have another Power 4 opponent (Houston) on deck at HOME. Jax St will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after last year’s loss, and road trips to Jacksonville are never comfortable.

MEGAmazing Tidbits
Georgia Southern University is located in Statesboro, Georgia — a classic college town of roughly 34,000 people in the heart of the Georgia coastal plain. The Eagles built one of the most dominant FCS programs in history, winning SIX national championships between 1985 and 2000. Their transition to FBS since 2014 has been a fascinating journey for a proud program with deep roots in the sport.
When legendary coach Erk Russell brought football back to Georgia Southern in 1981, he pulled off one of the greatest mind tricks in program history. He convinced his players that the NASTY drainage ditch they had to cross every day between the locker room and practice field was actually “Beautiful Eagle Creek” — filled with magical waters that gave them superpowers. The man even took a jug of that ditch water on road trips and sprinkled it on opposing fields. Straight up voodoo, yo.
Paulson Stadium was nicknamed the “HOUSE OF PAIN” during the Eagles’ dominant FCS era because of how difficult it was for visiting teams to win there.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
The biggest reason for optimism in Statesboro? Max Johnson under center. After stops at UNC, Texas A&M, and LSU, the veteran will be one of the better quarterbacks in the entire Sun Belt. Pair him with a big, experienced offensive line and some added size at wide receiver through the portal, and the Eagles should be able to SCORE the FOOTBALL. The defense was gross last year — but with a new DC and a fresh approach, we expect meaningful improvement.
The schedule leans difficult, and Georgia Southern is still a clear step behind JMU and Old Dominion at the top of the East. That said, 6–6 and a bowl berth feels very much in play — and if the defense improves even a little, this team has a chance to surprise some people.
Georgia… SOUTHERN!
