Marshall Thundering Herd 2026 College Football Preview
Posted June 6, 2026
2025 Recap
Record – 5-7
ATS – 7-5
The Thundering Herd followed up their title season with a disappointing 5–7 campaign and no bowl bid — dropping four of their final five games to limp home empty‑handed. To be fair, the downtick was somewhat predictable given that former HC Charles Huff bolted for Southern Miss and took approximately 230 players and the COKE MACHINE with him on the way out the door.
New HC and West BY GOD Virginia native Tony Gibson had a tough first rodeo. The good news? Year two is often better. Let’s see if the Herd can get back on track.
Marshall Thundering Herd 2026 Outlook
OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):
- Scoring: 30.8 PPG (#4 Sun Belt)
- Total Offense: 404.9 YPG (#4 Sun Belt)
- Rushing: 197.0 YPG (#5 Sun Belt)
- Passing: 207.9 YPG (#10 Sun Belt)
- Sacks Allowed: 19 (#2 Sun Belt)
Those are very respectable offensive numbers from a transitional season — top five in the Sun Belt in scoring, total offense, and rushing. At quarterback, Carlos Del Rio‑Wilson returns as the clear leader. He wasn’t just steady last year — he led the Herd in rushing while putting together an efficient breakout campaign as a passer (67%, 17–5 TD‑to‑INT; 660 yards, 6 TD rushing). That dual‑threat ability gives Marshall a real foundation to build around in Gibson’s run‑first system. Veteran Zion Turner provides experienced depth behind him.
In the backfield, the offense will rely on multiple backs. Expect Jo’Shon Barbie to take on the largest share of the carries (5 TD LY), with help from electric transfer TJ Lester out of FCS West Georgia. The RB group should be able to keep the run game humming. At WR, the room gets a boost with the return of De’Andre Tamarez and Adrian Norton (7 combined TD grabs LY), whilst 6‑4 specimen Owen Sweeney joins the mix after a breakout season at VMI last year (723 yards, 8 TD). And don’t sleep on TE Toby Payne, who’s a very underrated THROW GAME option (37‑393, 3 TD).
Up front, the offensive line should be one of Marshall’s biggest strengths in 2026. Returning starters Jalen Slappy and Tariq Montgomery bring size, experience, and physicality, while the addition of guard Robby Martin from West Virginia adds even more toughness to the interior.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):
- Scoring Defense: 30.3 PPG (#9 Sun Belt)
- Total Defense: 410.6 YPG (#8 Sun Belt)
- Rush Defense: 148.9 YPG (#4 Sun Belt)
- Pass Defense: 261.7 YPG (#13 Sun Belt)
- Sacks: 29 (#5 Sun Belt)
Those defensive numbers show some notable splits — a solid #4 rush defense and respectable sack production, but near the bottom of the Sun Belt in pass defense (261.7 YPG). Fixing the secondary is clearly the biggest challenge facing the defense in 2026. The YUUUGE offseason development is the return of DC Brad Lambert for his third stint in Huntington. Lambert’s 2020 defense was absolutely devastating.
Up front, the defensive line is undergoing a major reload with limited returning production. The group is leaning heavily on portal additions, including Mikell Williams from UTSA. At linebacker, Javae Gilmore provides stability as a stout run defender and veteran presence. The secondary is being rebuilt through the portal, highlighted by a few SPICY additions. Buffalo transfer CB Charles McCartherens and FCS standout Brayden Hall from Central Connecticut St are both likely starters on the back end. We expect improvement, but a lot will depend on how much PENETRATION they get up front.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Herd will be going young in the kicking department after the departure of the All-UNIVERSE combo of PK Lorcan Quinn (21-26 FG, 4-6 from 50+ LY) to ROLL TIDE (!) and punter Nathan Totten to Virginia Tech. They’ll also need to reload in the return game.
Schedule Analysis
Overall — The opener at Penn St is going to be a virtual BLOODBATH, but the Herd could realistically be 3–1 heading into Sun Belt action. The conference road games are NASTY — opening at defending champ James Madison and later facing Old Dominion (see below). The good news is the West draw is favorable (ULM, South Alabama), and the final two games of the regular season are very winnable should they need wins badly in November.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot — at Old Dominion (Oct 31)
Old Dominion will be fired up for revenge after getting drilled 48–24 in Huntington last year, and the Monarchs are clearly one of the best teams in the FUN BELT.

No leanage.
We’re pretty bullish on this year’s squad but were hoping for a lower number. Taking a pass for now.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
The Marshall plane crash of November 14, 1970 remains one of the most tragic events in sports history. All 75 people on board perished, including 37 players, coaches, and supporters. The program rebuilt from scratch and returned to the field in 1971. The story was later immortalized in the 2006 film We Are Marshall.
Marshall’s nickname has a great origin story. The school originally went by “Indians” before eventually settling on “Big Green” around 1910 — a nickname immediately criticized as boring. In 1925, Huntington Herald‑Dispatch sportswriter Duke Ridgley coined “THUNDERING HERD” to describe the football team after a big opening win — and the name was perfectly timed given the popularity of Zane Grey’s novel of the same name. It caught on immediately and is now one of the more unique nicknames in college football. Trivia BOMBS out of nowhere, bay‑bee.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
Year two under Tony Gibson should be a meaningful step forward for the Thundering Herd. The return of DC Brad Lambert gives the defense a real identity and some much‑needed juice, while the passing game has the pieces to do some serious damage. That said, the Sun Belt road schedule is no joke — especially that Week 1 trip to James Madison — and we see Marshall as a notch below the Dukes and Old Dominion in the East.
We’re calling for a return to bowl eligibility, and if the defense takes a meaningful step forward, this team has a chance to be a legitimate SURPRISE PACKAGE in 2026.
WE ARE… MARSHALL!
