East Carolina Pirates 2026 College Football Preview
Posted July 4, 2026
2025 Recap
Record – 9-4
ATS – 8-5
ARRR, raise the black flag — the Pirates be sailin’ strong after a 9–4 season!
East Carolina carried the momentum from last year’s impressive finish straight into 2025. They suffered a pair of understandable losses early on (NC State, BYU) but then went on a five-game HEATER to move to 7-2 and 5-0 in conference play. Unfortunately, their American Conference dreams went GLUG GLUG GLUG straight down into Davy Jones’ Locker after losses to Memphis and UTSA, but you’ve gotta love a nine-win season if you’re a Pirates fan. And who isn’t, bay-bee!
East Carolina Pirates 2026 Outlook
OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (American):
- Scoring: 32.7 PPG (#4 American)
- Total Offense: 449.0 YPG (#3 American)
- Rushing: 176.3 YPG (#7 American)
- Passing: 272.7 YPG (#4 American)
- Sacks Allowed: 18 (#4 American)
The Pirates had a balanced attack last season and got very efficient play from QB Katin Houser, who threw for 3,300 yards while only tossing 6 INTs in over 400 attempts. Houser must be replaced, and East Carolina will roll with one of two transfer portal additions. Emory Williams comes over from Miami but didn’t show much in very limited action over the last three seasons. That said, he’s got good size (6-5, 225) and should appreciate the drop in class from the ACC. Mitch Griffis is a veteran backup (Texas Tech, Wake Forest) who isn’t the answer if he’s forced to play a ton of snaps.
The RB room is in reset mode after losing their productive 1-2 punch of London Montgomery and Marlon Gunn, who combined for over 1,300 rushing yards and 13 TDs in 2025. The Pirates have the makings of duplicating that dynamic duo as North Texas transfer Ashton Gray (6-0, 215) and Marshall transfer Michael Allen (5-11, 206) have the size and pedigree to make things work, but they’ve never been asked to play a prominent role. There are a lot of changes happening with the offensive line, but the Pirates scooped up a pair of talented free agents in guard Brandon Best and tackle Hayes Creel.
East Carolina will be without their top-two WRs from the 2025 squad, including 1,000-yard man Anthony Smith. However, we feel really good about the transfer portal haul, which makes this a deep group. Slot wizard Brock Spalding is back in the mix (554 yards, 3 TD), and there are a few guys who can emerge on the outside, including Landon Sides (North Texas) and Ja’Keith Hamilton (Furman).
The SECRET SAUCE to the offense just might be new OC Jordan Davis, who was the mastermind behind the #1 offense in college football last year at North Texas (512 YPG).
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (American):
- Scoring: 20.1 PPG (#1 American)
- Total Defense: 351.0 YPG (#2 American)
- Rushing Defense: 120.2 YPG (#2 American)
- Passing Defense: 230.8 YPG (#8 American)
- Sacks: 34 (#2 American)
We didn’t have East Carolina with the best scoring defense in the American on our 2025 BINGO CARD, but they were fantastic, and they also managed to achieve impressive PENETRATION. Some key cogs in the machine are back in the mix this season, but it’ll be almost impossible to duplicate the level of performance that we saw last year.
East Carolina’s defensive line has some size and experience, but they’ll definitely miss leading sack producer Zion Wilson (7 sacks). Jasiyah Robinson and Kendrick DuJour should provide the most production off the edge, while Preston Carr (6-3, 315) and Rion Roseborough bring GIRTH inside. The group should be solid against the run, but generating consistent pressure like we saw so often last year may be a challenge.
The linebacker corps will miss versatile Samuel Dankah (#3 in tackles, 7 TFL), who’s trying his hand with the Denver Broncos, but DJ Johnson (#2 in tackles) stands out as a productive piece in the middle. Crews Law and Kevon Merrell add depth and versatility. The secondary has some veteran presence but could be a work in progress, as the entire starting group must be replaced. Ayden Duncanson and Zyeir Gamble (App State) give the Pirates experience at safety, while Ashton Levells-Mitchell (FIU) and several other new faces will compete for snaps at corner.
SPECIAL TEAMS
PK Andrew Conrad has been a fairly reliable specimen for the Pirates over the years (36/51 FG, 83/87 XP), although he didn’t attempt a FG in 2025. They’ll be introducing a new punter and reloading at kick returner. Don’t exactly have a warm and fuzzy feeling about special teams, but we’ll see how things go.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – Yes, guy.
You couldn’t have asked for a better list of conference assignments as the Pirates don’t have to worry about facing Navy, UTSA, or Tulane (!). They also get to face the PURE FILTH of the conference (Rice, UAB, Charlotte), which certainly helps. The non-conference slate is soft after the opening week slaughter at the hands of ROLL TIDE.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Army (Nov 21)
This will be East Carolina’s second road game in a row, and Army will be looking to avenge last year’s spanking in Greenville. Also note that the last time the Pirates traveled to West Point (2024), they got buried.
Season Win Total
Market consensus – July 4
Over 7.5 -105
Under 7.5 -125
MEGALOCKS says:
Lean: Over
The roster certainly has a few holes, but it’s kinda tough to find four losses in that schedule.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
ECU’s mascot, PeeDee the Pirate, is named after the Pee Dee River. For many years, the university rolled with a rotating cast of mascots — including students dressed as parrots — before finally settling on the costumed character fans know today. Turns out ECU tried everything from wildcats to poodles to pirate parrots before finally saying, “ARRR, enough — give us a real Pirate.”
The devastating Sandra Bullock attended East Carolina University in the 1980s, studying acting and performing in several campus theatre productions before heading off to chase her Hollywood career. ARRR, even a salty buccaneer knows beauty when he spies it — that be a fine‑lookin’ lass, matey. ARRR.
The Pirates are 9-9 all-time in bowl games, but are currently on a three-game HEATER.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
East Carolina has been a tough out since Blake Harrell took over the controls, as the swashbucklers boast a 14–5 mark under his captaincy. It’ll be interesting to see how all the new weaponry works out, particularly at QB, and you’ve got to think their new OC will figure out how to get things moving. The defense will definitely take a step back, but that reality is offset by a buttery-soft schedule. This doesn’t look like a championship-caliber squad, but there’s no reason they can’t stay in the mix heading into November.
We believe in the Pirates — it’s the spirit of ECU!
