Alabama Crimson Tide 2022 College Football Preview

August 12, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 13-2

ATS – 6-7

You’ve gotta be in the ROLL TIDE universe when a 13-win season is a disappointment. There were a few warning signs along the way even after they were upset by Texas A&M. They beat LSU by 6, WOO PIG by 7, and slithered past Auburn in 4-OT. Everything seemed fine after they pulled a mild upset and beat Georgia in the SEC Championship Game (W 41-24), but the Dawgs got their revenge in the big game and won the National Championship.

Alabama Crimson Tide 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Tide averaged a rock solid 39.9 PPG LY (#6 FBS) and they did the majority of their damage thru the air thanks to the great work of Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young (4,872, 47-7 TD to INT). Alabama averaged a mediocre 150 YPG on the ground (#77 FBS) whilst boasting a 1,300 yard RB in Brian Robinson. 41 sacks allowed will kill your net rushing totals, yo. Young is back to lead the offense and he’ll be challenged to repeat as the Heisman winner given that he loses the vast majority of his WR/TE weapons including a pair (!) of 1,000-yard WRs. It’s anyone’s guess who will step up for Young this season but it’ll have to be a few of the unproven (but extremely-talented) youngsters, or maybe a transfer portal addition or two. We’re a bit skeptical and note that WR JoJo Earle is out with an injury as of press time and is expected to miss about a month of the regular season. The RB room is loaded and the addition of RB Jahmyr Gibbs from Georgia Tech is almost certain to pay off in an yuuuge way. The OL is stocked with raw talent but they were a major disappointment LY and lost their AA left tackle. Oh ya, and how about the aforementioned 41 sacks allowed? We expect them to be a top-15 offense this season but can’t see them being elite, even with Young as the QB.

DEFENSE

ROLL TIDE played very good defense LY but it wasn’t an epic stop unit (20 PPG, #18 FBS). They were a rock vs the run (#4) but had their issues defending the pass at times and they allowed 280+ yards on five occasions. The defense will be excellent in 2022 as they bring back seven starters and their top-four tacklers including Will Anderson who’s one of the best players in college football. Anderson registered an impossible 17.5 sacks, 34.5 TFL, and 9 QBH in 2021. He’ll team with leading tackler Henry To’oTo’o and friends to form an elite LB corps that’ll support a talented and large DL. The secondary is due to improve BIGLY with the return of AA safety Jordan Battle and note that they now have a PAIR of emerging stars at CB in KOOL-AID McKinstry and LSU transfer Eli Ricks. One could make a very good argument that this is most talented defense in the nation.

SPECIAL TEAMS

They’ll be fine in the kicking game with the return of PK Will Reichard (22-28 FG, 71-72 XP) and punter James Burnip but will definitely miss the explosiveness of KR Jameson Williams (2 TD LY).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It looks pretty sweet. They’ve got three blowout wins guaranteed in non-conference play and the road game at Texas isn’t nearly as scary as you would have thought when it was scheduled. They also miss Georgia and Florida from the East. Vanderbilt magically ends up on the schedule for the 167th straight season **.

** needs fact check

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – September 17 – ULM

This contest comes after the Texas game and before SEC play opens up (Vanderbilt). We expect to see a litany of scrubs in the game starting late 3Q and won’t be laying the 40 or so points in this spot.

Season Win Total

per BetOnline Aug 12

Over 10.5 -265

Under 10.5 +205

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

We won’t be playing it unless we find something in the -200 range (good luck, right?) but it’s hard to see this team losing two regular season games.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Despite being the poster child of a “public side” on most occasions, Nick Saban has posted excellent ATS numbers with ROLL TIDE. How does a 56% mark over 207 games sound to you?

Alabama is 65-3 at home over the L10Y.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

It’s time for another title run, buh buh. They return the Heisman Trophy winner at QB, boast a ridiculous set of RBs, and have what might be the best defense in college football. The THROW GAME won’t be as explosive as it’s been in recent years but we expect them to be balanced and back in the College Football Playoff yet again. Logical favorite to win all the marbles.
