College Football Predictions – Arkansas Razorbacks 2020 College Football Preview
2019 Recap
Record – 2-10
ATS – 5-7
YIKES.
A once proud Razorbacks program stumbled through their second consecutive 2-10 season, and the PIECE DE RESISTANCE had to be their 45-19 home loss to the wacky Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in November. The HOGS are going with a new (and first time) HC in Sam Pittman and it’s clear that he has a lot of work to do in Fayetteville. What should we expect in 2020?
2020 MEGALOCKS Opening Power Rating
West Division – #7
SEC – TBD
Arkansas Razorbacks 2020 Outlook
OFFENSE
The offense has been a HOT MESS in each of the last two campaigns finishing 2nd last and dead last in SEC scoring offense (21.4, 21.7). The hope is that former Florida Gator QB Feleipe Franks can guide the offense to better things, and the good news is that he will have some talented players at RB, WR, and TE to help him out. RB Rakeem Boyd is coming off a fine 1,100-yard (!) campaign and is one of the best backs in the SEC. The WR corps is experienced and note that TE Hudson Henry was a very highly recruited specimen. The OL has three starters back for battle and note that HC Sam Pittman has had great success in coaching the big boys.
We expect a moderate increase in production, although depth across the roster is a concern.
DEFENSE
There’s a lot of work to do on this side of ball as evidenced by the last three campaigns (36.8, 34.8, 36.2 PPG) Last season they allowed an unseemly 222 YPG on the ground and an impossible 29 rushing TDs. Both marks were last in the SEC. They also pulled off the DAILY DOUBLE by finishing last in the SEC in pass efficiency D. Former Missouri DC and HC Barry Odom will try and do his best with six returning starters but it won’t be easy with a DL that looks like one of the weakest in the conference on paper. They also lose star LB De’Jon Harris (101 tackles LY led team). The good news is that they have an experienced and fairly talented secondary. Hopefully, they can find a way to get more pressure on the QB (21 sacks LY, #12 SEC)
They should make a small improvement in scoring defense and total defense but this still looks like a bad unit.
SPECIAL TEAMS
They have continuity in the return game and at punter where senior punter Sam Loy returns for his senior season. They’ll need to find a new PK.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – Ouch. They start with Georgia and also draw Florida out of the SEC East. Two of their final three games are vs LSU and ROLL TIDE. Whoa, Nellie.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing particularly heinous noted.
Season Win Total
Over 1.5 +130
Under 1.5 -160
MEGALOCKS says:
That number says it all. There are a small handful of winnable games but sadly they don’t get Vanderbilt on the docket. We won’t play it but would probably prefer to plug our nose and take the over at that price.
MEGAmazing Tidbit
Arkansas has made three appearances in the SEC Championship Game and lost on each occasion (Florida 2, Georgia 1).
MEGALOCKS Outlook:
It’s time for a reset. And the fans deserve better than a combined four wins over the last two years. It’s the nastiest division on college football so it won’t be pretty trying to become more competitive. The overall prognosis is PAIN but we think they’re capable of bagging a win or two, and hopefully they can avoid the injury bug which would be devastating given their lack of depth.
WOO PIG SOOIE!
