Boise St Broncos 2021 College Football Preview

July 10, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 7-5

ATS – 7-5

It was a bit of an uneven campaign as the Broncos struggled (by their standards) to a final record of 7-5. Boise St lost three of their first five games but two of those were close affairs vs good teams (UCF, Oklahoma St). They got on a bit of a HEEEETER late in the year winning four straight but stunk it up in the season finale vs San Diego St. The Broncos had to pull out of the Arizona Bowl due to totally scientific plandemic “positive test” results.

Can they pull up their collective socks and make a run at a Mountain West title this season?

Boise St Broncos 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

Boise St was pretty mediocre on offense LY (#78 FBS total offense, #58 scoring offense) and were particularly smelly on the ground (120 YPG, #110 FBS). Hank Bachmeier was decent (20-8 TD to INT, 63%) but he had to throw over 400 times and was asked to do too much. Only one man that booked more than 200 receiving yards LY is back in the mix and they”ll have to do without their great WR Khalil Shakir (77, 1,117, 7 TD) who’s off to the NFL. #1 RB George Holani returns (569, TD) but he’s now three years removed from a 1,000-yard season and we aren’t sure he’s a reliable #1 workhorse. The depth behind him is unproven. The OL appears to be in great shape with the return of four starters including an excellent LT John Ojukwu but they’ll have to be a lot better if Boise St plans on being a championship squad. We project “goodness” and not greatness on offense in 2022.

DEFENSE

Things look really good on this side of the football as the Broncos return eight starters and the overwhelming majority of participants from LY’s fine stop unit (19 PPG, #12 FBS). We expect more heat on the QB and better run defense from the DL and LB groups (158 YPG, #7 Mtn West) as they are talented and yuuuge at DT, have pass rushing ability at DE, and are experienced at LB. The majority of starters on the back end are back including #1 tackler and 2nd Team MW honoree safety JL Skinner. Boise will compete with the always nasty Aztecs to be the best defense in the conference. <grabs popcorn>

SPECIAL TEAMS

Boise St boasts one of the best PK in college football in Jonah Dalmas (26-28 FG, 38-39 XP LY) but need to replace their fine punter Joel Velazquez as well as elite PR Khalil Shakir.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s mostly good news for Broncos fans. The non-conference schedule is BUTTERY SOFT and they get San Diego St, Fresno St, and BYU at home.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – September 23 – at UTEP

This is a dreaded lookahead spot with San Diego St lurking on deck.

Season Win Total

Per BetOnline July 10

Over 9 -140

Under 9 +110

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

We don’t have the JACOBS to go with the ‘under’ but going ‘over’ 9 doesn’t leave much room for error.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Simmer in this. The great PHIL STEELE reminds us that Boise St has been bowl eligible for an impossible 24 straight years.

Boise St has been a significant money-loser in the role of home favorite over the L10Y (25-34, 42%).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Our DEEP MOUNTAIN WEST INSIDERS anticipate a hungry bunch taking the field in 2022. They’ve got a talented veteran QB and an excellent defense complimented by a favorable schedule. They’ve gotta face Air Force on the road but still have to be considered the  favorite to take down the division.
