Boston College Eagles 2022 College Football Preview

August 4, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 6-6

ATS – 6-6

The Eagles stormed out of the gate with four wins in a row and looked to be well on their way to a big season but it all fell apart after a close call vs Clemson in week five (L 19-13). Boston College managed just two wins the rest of the way and finished the season at the .500 mark. They didn’t get a chance to strut their stuff in the postseason as the Military Bowl was canceled on account of the sniffles. Safety first.

Boston College Eagles 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

Boston College struggled mightily on offense LY (#11 ACC scoring offense, dead last total offense) but it didn’t help that they lost starting QB Phil Jurkovec for a yuuuge chunk of the campaign. Jurko is back this year and he’ll look to regain the form that made him look like a rising star during the 2020 plandemic season (61%, 2,558, 17-5 TD to INT). Three of his top-four targets are back in the mix including Zay Flowers who is one of the most underrated WRs in the ACC (746, 17.0, 5 TD LY). The Eagles return 1,000-yard RB Pat Garwo as well as back-up Alec Sinkfield but they might have trouble getting things rolling behind an OL that returns ZERO starters after the season-ending injury to NFL-prospect Christian Mahogany. There appears to be more downside than upside given the uncertainty up front.

DEFENSE

The Eagles were stingy LY (22 PPG, #3 ACC) despite not getting much heat on the QB (21 sacks, #11 ACC). Things look good heading into 2022 as they bring back eight starters, their top-four tacklers, as well as leading sack producer DE Marcus Valdez (5). The DL will be fine and they just need to get the pass rush cranked up a bit. The experienced LB group brings back #1 tackler Kam Arnold among others and three starters return to a secondary that led the way to the Eagles’ excellent pass efficiency D ranking in 2021 (#3 ACC, 14-10 TD to INT). We expect another solid year from this stop unit.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Boston College will definitely miss PR/KR Travis Levy and punter Grant Carlson but at least they bring back PK Connor Lytton who was deadly in limited action LY (11-12 FG, 25-25 XP).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s a mixed bag. They’ve got three CUPCAKES to deal with in non-conference action but have to travel to face the Irish in November. The draw from the Coastal is sweet (Hokies, Duke) but they have four road games in the 2nd half. Can’t play from behind this year.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – October 29 – at Connecticut

The Eagles will be in the unfamiliar role of point spread road chalk and note that this game is sandwiched between a pair of ACC affairs (Wake, Duke).

Season Win Total

per BetOnline Aug 4

Over 6 -105

Under 6 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under

This isn’t a horrible team by any means but it’ll be tough to get to seven wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

This tidbit just keeps on giving, yo. Boston College has tallied precisely six or seven wins in every season but one since 2013! What in the SAM HILL happened back in 2015 when they went 3-9?

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Call us crazy, but this has the look of another .500 or thereabouts edition of Boston College football. The bad news is that there appears to be more downside than upside with this bunch. The offensive line, an Eagles staple, looks to be a yuuuge problem area and the schedule won’t be easy to navigate. We give them a 50/50 shot of making a bowl game.
