Bowling Green Falcons 2022 College Football Preview

July 1, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 4-8

ATS – 8-4

The Falcons showed a bit of life last year and found a way to cobble together four wins, their highest win total since they pulled the 4-8 trick back in 2016. They provided us with one of the biggest SHOCK the WORLD moments of 2021 when they took down Minnesota on the road (W 14-10) and they also took care of a couple of teams just above their weight class (Buffalo, Ohio).

Can FALCON NATION get their hopes up for a possible bowl appearance in 2022?

Bowling Green Falcons 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

Bowling Green was TRASH on offense in 2021 (#117 FBS total offense, #120 run, #82 pass, #109 3rd downs) and will have to be a lot more productive if they plan on crawling their way back to MAC respectability. The entire compliment of QB/RB/WR/TE personnel are back for battle and there’s reason to think they could be much improved in 2022. QB Matt McDonald posted a MEH 12-7 TD to INT mark LY and needs to do a better job of stretching the field. There’s an experienced group of targets at McDonald’s disposal including WR Tyrone Broden (16.6), former Boston College WR CJ Lewis, and TE Christian Sims (41, 418, 2 TD). It’ll likely be a committee approach at RB and recall that #1 RB Terion Stewart averaged 5.9 YPC LY. The offensive line is a young group that should be much better this year. It’ll be a shock to our EXTRA DEEP MAC INSIDERS if this isn’t the best Falcons offense in several years.

DEFENSE

The Falcons made great strides on defense LY and cut their YPG total from 476 to a very respectable 374 (!) (#4 MAC). Nine starters return on this side of the football and there’s every reason to think they’ll be a tough unit to move the ball upon once again. The entire starting front seven is back including 1st Team MAC honoree LB Darren Anders (#1 tackler, 9.5 TFL) and #1 sack man DE Karl Brooks (7.5 sacks). The secondary is in good shape with CB Davon Ferguson and FS Jordan Anderson patrolling the air lanes. The overall depth on this side of the football has been enhanced by transfers and we like what we see.

SPECIAL TEAMS

You can’t have everything, yo. Things look a bit sketchy with the loss of punter Matt Naranjo, ace PK Nate Needham (19/20 FG LY) (!), as well as their ST coach.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The schedule maker didn’t do these guys any favors. There’s a brutal draw from the West division (at Central Michigan, Western Michigan, at Toledo) to go along with a pair of BODY BAG games (at UCLA, at Mississippi St).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing overly-heinous is noted.

Season Win Total

Per BetOnline July 1

Over 4.5 -105

Under 4.5 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

As much as we like where the program is heading, it’s probably reasonable to say that five wins or more would be a major accomplishment. We’re gonna keep this one on the BACK BURNER and may reconsider an ‘over’ during the summer, especially if we can find a flat ‘4’. Stay tuned!

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Bowling Green has played their home games in Doyt Perry Stadium since 1966. The stadium was named after HC Doyt Perry who led the Falcons to the NCAA College Division National Championship in 1959.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Don’t look now but there might be a BURGEONING JUGGERNAUT situation developing at Bowling Green. It’s not uncommon for teams to make a quick rise from the toilet to the penthouse in MACtion ACTION but the Falcons might be a year away. Having said all that, we expect them to pull an upset or two and give them a PUNCHER’S CHANCE of getting to six wins and bowl eligibility. Let’s do ittttttt!
