Buffalo Bulls 2022 College Football Preview

July 3, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 4-8

ATS – 3-8-1

The Bulls posted an outstanding 24-10 win-loss record (.706) from 2018-2020 and those seasons included three bowl trips and TWO appearances in the MAC Championship Game (0-2). The Bulls struggled in year one of the Maurice Linguist era and only managed to book four wins along the way. Said victories came against the SISTERS OF THE VACCINE MAIMED AND INJURED (Wagner, Old Dominion, Ohio, Akron) so there wasn’t much to celebrate. On to 2022.

Buffalo Bulls 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

Buffalo received mediocre play from the QB position LY (12-11 TD to INT, #101 FBS pass efficiency) but still managed to GIT ER DONE on the ground (195 YPG, #31 FBS). There are a lot of question marks on offense heading into 2022 and it starts at QB where it appears that Rutgers transfer Cole Snyder (31 career pass attempts) may get the keys to the car. #1 RB Dylan McDuffie left via the transfer portal but #2 rusher Ron Cook returns and redshirt freshman Al-Ja Henderson had an impressive showing during the spring. Also note that Buffalo has been RUNNING BACK U over the last number of years so they should be given the benefit of the doubt. Quian Williams is a legit #1 WR (64, 835, 2 TD LY) and getting a bunch of transfers added to the WR room including Justin Marshall from Louisville was a POWER MOVE. The key to the entire operation is how the newly formulated OL comes together. One returning starter, lots of transfers.

DEFENSE

The Bulls were nothing special on defense LY (#6 MAC scoring defense, #7 total defense) but were able to get after the QB (36 sacks, T34 FBS), and note that the Bulls have booked 35+ sacks in each of the last three non-PLANDEMIC seasons. Six starters return on this side of the football including their phenomenal LB James Patterson who led the team in tackles (116) and TFL (13) in 2021. NG Daymond Williams is an excellent piece to build around up front (10.5 TFL) and there’s a yuuuge Power 5 talent infusion coming via the transfer portal. We expect much better things from the defense this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS

All the main components are back for duty but PK Alex McNulty needs to be more consistent (13-21 FG, 5-12 40+ LY) and they could use some pop at KR and PR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s not that bad. Their two non-conference road games are tough (Maryland, Coastal Carolina) but it’s not like visiting Penn St or Ohio St. They draw Toledo from the West but get them at home and also get to tangle with the Redhawks in Buffalo. The final two games are at home.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – October 15 – at Massachusetts

This is a dreaded SANDWICH spot between a pair of MACtion events (at Bowling Green, Toledo).

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

It would be a big disappointment if this team didn’t get to five wins or more.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The student body voted to suspend the football program after the 1970 season ** and the Bulls didn’t return to the field until 1977.

** in protest over climate change and white supremacy <might need fact check>

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

We have a sneaky feeling that these guys are going to be much better in 2022. There are holes to be filled on offense but the overall talent level on the roster has been significantly upgraded and the MAC East is BUTTERY SOFT. Our DEEP MAC INSIDERS expect bowl eligibility and see them as a longshot player for the divisional spoils.

Let’s GO Buff-A-LO!
