Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2022 College Football Preview

July 17, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 11-2

ATS – 6-7

Coastal Carolina won eleven games for the 2nd year in a row but certainly had to be disappointed after missing out on a trip to the Sun Belt Championship Game. Coastal was the betting favorite to win the conference heading into the season but dropped a pair of games in the span of four weeks and GLUG GLUG GLUG….the title hopes went down the drain. The Chanticleers treated us to an entertaining Cure Bowl when they went toe-to-toe with Northern Illinois and ended up victorious (47-41) to finish the campaign at 11-2.

Do they have the talent to make another run at the Sun Belt title?

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Chanticleers improved their PPG output for the 4th consecutive season LY and averaged a whopping 40.9 PPG (#5 FBS). They were impeccably balanced as per usual averaging 229 YPG on the ground and 266 YPG thru the air. QB Grayson McCall is a legit star and he comes into 2022 off another great season (73%, 27-3 TD to INT) but he’ll be without a BOATLOAD of last year’s key contributors. The top-three THROW GAME targets are gone including the outstanding WR Jaivon Heiligh (1,128, 7 TD) and their all-Universe TE Isaiah Likely who’s off to the NFL. Adding WR Sam Pinckney from Georgia St will help (815, 7 TD in 2020) but there’s no doubt they’re less potent at WR/TE. They’re set at RB with the return of two of the top-three including Braydon Bennett who averaged an impossible 8.6 (!!) YPC in 2021. Coastal is much less experienced up front heading into 2022 and return just a pair of starters. The Chanticleers will still have one of the better offenses in the Sun Belt but they’re much less scary than they were in 2021.

DEFENSE

Coastal had the #1 total defense in the conference LY (340 YPG) and the #2 scoring defense (21.6 PPG) but will have to endure a major rebuilding/reloading project in 2022. They return just three starters (!) on this side of the football and lose their top-five tacklers. At least the Chanticleers bring back a pair of key contributors in 1st Team Sun Belt member DL Josaiah Stewart (12.5 sacks) and CB D’Jordan Strong (10 PBU). They’re almost certain to take a moderate step backwards on defense unless the small handful of transfers exceed expectations. Stay tuned!

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Chanticleers lose essentially everyone of consequence from LY’s excellent special teams group including their combo of PK Massimo Biscardi (7/8 FG, 46-48 XP LY) and punter Charles Ouverson.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s very manageable. They have a BUTTERY SOFT non-conference schedule, miss Louisiana and Troy from the West division, and get to play their first three games at home. Their conference fate has a good shot of being decided in a six-day (!) span when they face Marshall (A) and Appalachian St (H). Note that their final two games are ON THE HIGHWAY.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – November 12 – Southern Miss

This isn’t an ideal spot to back the home favorite as this match-up with the Golden Eagles comes right after the aforementioned killer games with the Herd and Mountaineers.

Lean: Over

That’s a SPICY MEATBALL. We give them a good shot of winning eight or more games as it’s possible they start 6-1 or 7-0.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Brooks Stadium, home of the teal TURF by the SURF in Conway, SC is named after the Brooks children, Coby Garrett and Boni Belle. Their father Robert Howell Brooks founded HOOTERS OF AMERICA INC. in 1984. **

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

We knew these guys would have to undergo a major refresh of talent at some point, and well, welcome to 2022. It doesn’t hurt to have an elite QB and a crafty coaching staff but it’s gonna be tough to get past Marshall and Appalachian St. We’ll call for them to fall short of a division title but still expect this team to be an entertaining bunch. Good luck, Chants!
