College Football Week 13 in Review

That was a lot of fun! Dominating performances. Upsets. Epic individual efforts. Before we start thinking about this Saturday’s slate of Championship games let’s reflect back on Rivalry Week. Sadly, it was the last full week of the season.

The BIG games

Oklahoma 59 West Virginia 56

Let’s start with some sweet Friday night Big 12 action.

This was a crazy back-and-forth game with both QBs playing out of their minds. Mountaineers’ QB Will Grier threw for 539 yards and 4 TDs and almost carried the team to an appearance in the Big 12 Championship Game. Sooners’ QB Kyler Murray would be a shoe-in for the Heisman in our view in any other year not inhabited by a certain ROLL TIDE signal caller. Murray passed for 364 yards, rushed for another 114 on the ground and was nails late in the game when the Sooners knew they could NOT give West Virginia the ball back for a chance to win or tie.

Ohio St 62 Michigan 39

The Buckeyes just scored again as we were typing this sentence.

What a dominating performance. Full marks to Ohio St for proving WHY they have owned the Big Ten since Urban Meyer arrived on the scene. QB Dwayne Haskins was fantastic throwing for 396 yards and 6 (!) TDs. The most impressive thing about this game was the pass protection by the Ohio St offensive line. Yes, there were a lot of short passes, but Michigan could not get any heat on Haskins (ZERO sacks in 31 attempts) and that opened up everything for the offense.

Washington 28 Washington St 15

Stop us if you have heard this before. The Huskies beat up on their in-state rival with a dominating performance. There were some elements to deal with (snow) that made it fun to watch and a bit challenging for the Washington St offense. That being said, the Huskies’ D was fantastic and will pose a big challenge for Utah this Saturday.

ROLL TIDE 52 Auburn 21

Well, it was interesting for a while. The Tigers trailed just 17-14 at the half and then Alabama went BEAST MODE outscoring Auburn 35-7 the rest of the way.

Notre Dame 24 USC 17

Whoa, Nellie!

The Irish are back in the playoff after taking care of business on Saturday night. USC started out with a 10-0 lead but once Notre Dame settled into the game it was pretty much over. The Trojans fought until the end and got a “meaningless” TD to bring the final margin to 7 points.

Texas A&M 74 LSU 72

Yup, this happened. SEVEN overtimes, and congrats to those who watched to the end. First off, the overtime rules need to change, but to whine about that while ignoring the heart displayed by the players and the drama that unfolded is unfair. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron got the Gatorade bath only to see a officiating comedy show restart the game. Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond was absolute NAILS and LSU QB Joe Burrow proved again why the lazy media narrative of being ‘no good” is just plain wrong.

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 13

This is how we rate teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site. It is NOT meant to be a “playoff” ranking.

  1. ROLL TIDE – They are a sophisticated football ROBOT sent back from the year 2439 to destroy everything in their path. Just kidding. Not really.
  2. Clemson – Gave up 510 (!) yards passing to SC QB Jake Bentley. Tua may await.
  3. Georgia  – Another fine performance. Clicking on all cylinders.
  4. Notre Dame – 12-0. Get some well deserved time off to prepare for the playoff.
  5. Ohio St – Would make them a one-point favorite over Oklahoma. Splitting hairs, though.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

LSU – Boast a pair of wins over Top-10 teams according to the Sagarin ratings (Georgia, Mississippi St). Ohio St is the only other team that can make that claim (Michigan, Penn St).

Michigan – Still remain in our top-10 even after Saturday’s debacle.

Oklahoma – QB Kyler Murray is must-see TV. That is all.

Texas – Have the defense to slow down the Sooners and pull the upset.

Washington – Solid team. Looking forward to seeing who they draw in their bowl game.

How is our predicted FINAL FOUR looking right now?

ROLL TIDE, Georgia, Clemson, Wisconsin.

Alabama is on another level and are a virtual lock to get into the playoff even with an upset at the hands of Georgia this Saturday. Clemson is good to go unless they find a way to lose as 24-point favorites to Pitt. Even then?

MEGALOCKS JUGGERNAUTS

Here is a small sampling of teams that are out of action this week BUT may be worth looking at when bowl match-ups are determined.

Temple – HOOT HOOT. Were 7-1 in conference play with their only loss coming to UCF.

Georgia Tech – Really got the option rolling in the second half of the season and will be a handful even with extra prep time for their opponent.

Iowa St – A balanced team that doesn’t get the respect it deserves.

BYU – Will like fly under-the-radar and boast a fine young QB and rock solid D.

Miami Ohio – Might be playing the best football in the MAC right now. Sitting with six wins.

Enjoy Championship Saturday!
