College Football Week 2 in Review!

College Football Week 2 in Review

Whoa, Nellie. We had some big games and started to get a feel for who might be frauds and who might be real. It’s early to be sure, but there’s no doubt we can use the first two weeks of data and have a bit of fun thinking about how this might all turn out!

Let’s review week 2 and look ahead to this weekend.

The BIG games

Clemson 24 Texas A&M 10

An uneven performance by the Tigers but you never got the sense that the Aggies had a shot. QB Mond was mediocre and Trevor Lawrence was “ok”. Not too much drama in this one or standout performances. Texas A&M did everything they could to cover the point spread calling a timeout with 10 seconds left at the Clemson 2-yard line. Nervous times for bettors all over the globe. TD Aggies. “Meaningless score”.

LSU 45 Texas 38

Yes, guy. Our boy Joe Burrow threw for 471 yards and 4 TDs leading the Tigers to a big road win. Texas gets a lot of credit for fighting the entire way and the game was still in doubt in the 4th quarter. QB Sam Ehlinger showed why he’s one of the best players in college football. 401 yards passing vs the LSU defense and 19 carries for 60 yards and a TD. LSU looks elite. Horns appear to be in the next tier of “really good” teams.

Michigan 24 Army 21 (OT)

Had to put this game in here. Just love watching the service academies playing big name programs and they were almost able to SHOCK THE WORLD. The Black Knights had a long FG attempt to win the game in regulation and it just missed. Michigan better work on that offense during the bye week to get ready for the Badgers. Good news? They may have a #1 RB in Zach Charbonnet (33-100, 3 TD) but it’s hard to know given that the OL is off to a slow start.

California 20 Washington 19

Yup. They pulled a “Washington”. The Cal D is a force and they kept the team in the game until they could cobble together a bit of offense and win the game on a FG with 8 seconds left. Whomever you anoint as the best team in the PAC 12 North and PAC 12 South, keep in mind that this isn’t the ACC. There isn’t much of a drop off between #1 and #4 in each division. This season is going to be FUN to watch! Upsets, they are a brewin.

USC 45 Stanford 20

Great to see the new freshman QB for USC have such a great game as he carved up Stanford for 377 yards and 3 TDs. The Trojans got off to a slow start but looked really good once they got rolling. Note that the Cardinal was without starting QB KJ Costello.

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 2

This is how we rate teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site. It is NOT meant to be a “playoff” ranking.

  1. ROLL TIDE – Destroyed first two tomato cans on their schedule. South Cackalacky on deck.
  2. Clemson – Have looked a bit sleepy at times. Road test with Syracuse next.
  3. LSU – Have fun beating these guys. Should coast to Florida game at 5-0.
  4. Georgia – One more tune-up this week. Notre Dame comes to town on September 21.
  5. Oklahoma – Offense looks as explosive as ever. First test likely October 12 vs Longhorns.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

Ohio St – “Best of the rest”. Defense looks a lot better.

Oregon – Top rated PAC 12 team on paper by a sliver in our rankings.

Texas – Injuries a bit of a problem but they can beat almost anyone with that QB/HC combo.

Wisconsin – Untested, but back-to-back shutouts to start the year.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK 3

Alabama at South Carolina

ROLL TIDE is a yuuuuge favorite and rightly so. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see how they look in their first SEC road test.

Clemson at Syracuse

Last two meetings? Clemson won 27-23, Syracuse won 27-24. The Orange just gave up 89,000 yards and a gazillion points to Maryland.

Stanford at UCF

Stop us if you have heard this before, but UCF looks really good. We love that they have a test like this on their schedule and expect a big performance this week.

USC at BYU

Trojans have laid a lot of eggs on the road over the past few years and play the always tough BYU Cougars in Provo.

Iowa at Iowa St

Both teams are good enough to make noise in their respective conferences and we expect a close game with lots of intensity.

UNDER-THE-RADAR SIZZLERS!

Washington St at Houston

Get your calculators! Washington St has ANOTHER dangerous QB and Houston can light up just about anyone.

Maryland at Temple

Are the Terrapins THAT good? They are crushing and killing on offense. If they destroy the Owls it might be time to start considering them as a deep sleeper in the Big Ten, or at least someone that nobody wants to play.

Pittsburgh at Penn St

So much hatred. Oh, boy. Get ‘cho popcone.

Arizona St at Michigan St

One elite defense and one really good one. Old school football coming at you, baby. Sparty tries to get revenge for last year’s loss in Tempe.

Texas Tech at Arizona

Some sweet late night action on Saturday. Arizona is always “entertaining” and have a must-watch QB. Texas Tech could make a statement with a big road win that they are not to be discounted in the race for #2 in the Big 12.

Enjoy Week 3!
