College Football Week 3 in Review!

College Football Week 3 in Review

Hey, everyone!

There weren’t a lot of big time match-ups BUT there were a lot of exciting games and the big boys all looked pretty good. Let’s review week 3 and look ahead to this weekend.

Clemson 41 Syracuse 6

An uneven performance for the Tigers on offense and they were fortunate to get the cover (for those who laid 28 or more points) with a “meaningless” long TD run whilst running out the clock. The Syracuse OL was an absolute dumpster fire so we still don’t know how good the Clemson D might be this season. Then again, they did some fine work vs Texas A&M in week two.

ROLL TIDE 47 South Carolina 23

The passing attack was lethal. The run game? Not so much. Big props to the young freshman signal caller for South Carolina who looked pretty good in his first start against a solid D. It will be interesting to see how the Alabama offense stacks up vs the tough stop units on their schedule (Texas A&M, Auburn, LSU).

Florida 29 Kentucky 21

Kentucky brought back memories of the “old days” and blew another game vs the Gators. They led 21-10 after the third quarter but were beaten by a resilient team led by their backup QB. Both squads appear to be at least a few notches below Georgia. Note that approximately $67 trillion dollars changed hands in the sports wagering community thanks to a “meaningless” long TD run by the Gators whilst running out the clock.

UCF 45 Stanford 27

The Knights got up big early (28-7 before you could blink) and cruised from there. Stanford’s D laid an egg for the 2nd straight week vs high-powered offenses. At least they don’t play Oregon this week. Oh wait, they do.

Arizona St 10 Michigan St 7

Gut check time! The Sun Devils were kicked in the teeth for essentially the entire game (404-216 total yards in favor of Michigan St) and then scored a late TD to grab the lead. Michigan St’s game-tying FG was wiped off the board due to a penalty. Try again. Miss. Game over. Drive safely, folks.

Iowa 18 Iowa St 17

It took a long time to get this bad boy in the books due to weather delays and it was as close as we thought it would be. The game was salted away by an Iowa St special teams gaffe. Both teams will be tough outs in conference play.

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 3

This is how we rate teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site. It is NOT meant to be a “playoff” ranking.

  1. ROLL TIDE – D showed some holes, run game not up to par. Still REALLY good.
  2. Clemson – No scare from Syracuse this time around. Travel to UNC on Sept 28.
  3. LSU – Held serve in tune-up game.
  4. Georgia – Host Notre Dame on Saturday! Big game. First real test.
  5. Oklahoma – Felt like they could have scored 100 vs UCLA if so inclined.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

Auburn – How will their freshman QB perform in big SEC road games? Texas A&M on deck.

Ohio St – “Best of the rest”. Just a shade below the Sooners. Destroyed a decent Indiana team.

Oregon – First PAC 12 test this week as they visit Stanford.

Texas – Tricky game with Oklahoma St this Saturday.

Wisconsin – Can they go three straight games without allowing a point?

Upgrades and downgrades

Here is a short list of teams that have moved up or down significantly in our ratings.

Going up!

Navy – It’s REAL early (two games vs tomato cans) but this looks like a much improved squad.

SMU – Legit threat to beat anyone in the AAC. Stern test at TCU this week.

UNC – Like the QB and the defense is not bad at all! Can upset anyone in the ACC not named Clemson.

Maryland – BOTH sides of the ball are much improved. Capable of SHOCKING THE WORLD any given Saturday.

Kansas St – Loved the coaching hire AND things are turning around faster than expected.

Kansas – We love ourselves some Les Miles! Well done so far, Jayhawks.

Charlotte – Scoring oodles of points. Gotta get to a bowl game!

Uh oh.

South Florida – Hot garbage. Maybe the QB change will help?

Syracuse – The offensive line woes need to get fixed STAT.

Virginia Tech – Feels like they have disappointed us for a long time.

Florida International – Line play horrid. QB hurt. Yikes.

UCLA – Hopefully Chip Kelly can find “his guys” by the turn of the century.

Massachusetts – Somehow even worse than we thought.

Enjoy Week 4!
