College Football Week 5 in Review!

Hey, everyone!

Another great week of college football is in the books.

The BIG games

Ohio St 27 Penn St 26

Penn St QB Trace McSorley was fantastic on Saturday night (286 yards passing, 175 rushing) but Ohio St took advantage of some “interesting” coaching decisions by James Franklin and made the plays in the 4th quarter to pull off the comeback victory. This game may be gone but it will likely NOT be forgotten later in the season when teams are jockeying for playoff berths and bowl bids.

Notre Dame 38 Stanford 17

Stanford was in a tough spot on the road off a big win over Oregon BUT Notre Dame wiped the floor with the Cardinal and look really good heading into October. Stanford is still in decent shape in the PAC-12 North and we can’t wait for the showdown on November 3rd when they visit Washington.

Oregon 42 California 24

Not a “BIG” game BUT we were very impressed with the win AND Oregon gets Washington at home on October 13th after their bye week. The PAC-12 North is getting really interesting

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 5

This is how we rank the teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site.

  1. ROLL TIDE – They are a sophisticated football ROBOT sent back from the year 2439 to destroy everything in their path. Just kidding. Not really.
  2. Georgia – Got a much needed break this week with a blowout win over Tennessee.
  3. Ohio St – Snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
  4. Clemson – A toss-up with the Buckeyes. Hope QB Trevor Lawrence is not seriously injured.
  5. Washington – Get the nod in spot #5 based on wins over Auburn and Utah.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

LSU – Just a hair below Washington. Tough game with the Gators this week.

Michigan – Tough schedule remains but that D is nasty.

Notre Dame – Legit top-10 soon to be higher?

Oklahoma – The toughest games are all ahead of them. It starts with Texas this Saturday.

Penn St – Props to these guys for looking this good with a ton of new starters.

On the bubble……Auburn, West Virginia, Wisconsin

How is our predicted FINAL FOUR looking right now?

ROLL TIDE, Georgia, Clemson, Wisconsin.

Still feel pretty good that ROLL TIDE and Georgia will find their way into the playoff. Clemson’s schedule is very manageable BUT now they may need to go with a third string QB for a few games (still waiting on news as we go to press). Wisconsin has a clear path to the Big Ten Championship and have a puncher’s shot vs whomever emerges from the GROUP OF DEATH (Big 10 East).

JUGGERNAUTS and JABBAWOCKEEZ – Under the radar teams

Here are some non-favorites we think can reach their conference championship games. Just some thoughts. Check your local bookmaker for details if so inclined.

AAC

Navy – We still think it will come down to the game at UCF on November 10th. Army took the Sooners to OT. If you hold the ball for 59 minutes you are always in the game. <John Madden>

ACC

Virginia Tech – Even with the injury to their starting QB they came up with a big win at Duke. They get Miami at home on November 17.

Big 12

West Virginia – Still like these guys to SHOCK the WORLD and their schedule sets up nicely in the short term.

Big Ten

Michigan – Game for all the Big Ten East marbles (?) shaping up for November 24th in Columbus.

Conference USA

Marshall – Sticking with the Herd but they need to get the ground game going. They have MTSU and FAU at home.

MACtion

Buffalo – Just need to keep taking care of business. We think the offense is top-notch and the defense has enough to get it done.

Mountain West

Utah St – One game showdown looming in Boise on November 24th.

PAC 12

Washington St – Whoa. Well they get Oregon and Washington at home. Would need to take down Stanford on the road.

SEC

Florida – Missouri and South Carolina blew their chance with losses to GA. Florida would need to run the table and get a bit of help. Remember that crazy things can happen in the Georgia / Florida series. A longshot, but who knows?

Sun Belt

Georgia Southern – BIG win over Arkansas St and are looking good.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT WEEK!!

Enjoy week 6.
