College Football Week 5 in Review!

College Football Week 5 in Review

Hey, everyone!

This was a week in which most of the big boys held serve in impressive fashion. There was one notable exception, so let’s start there.

Clemson 21 North Carolina 20

Was this Clemson’s annual “scare game”, or a sign that they are a notch below teams like ROLL TIDE, Ohio St and Georgia? North Carolina went toe to toe with the CHAMPS for four quarters and took a shot at a two point conversion with about a minute left in the game. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful and Clemson remains undefeated. We agreed with the decision to try and take the lead and UNC went with what they felt was their best play. Clemson snuffed it out. When you are that big of an underdog it seems like the right move. Try and pull off one of the biggest wins in program history. The fact that they lost this game doesn’t change the fact that North Carolina is clearly on an upward trajectory.

Ohio St 48 Nebraska 7

WOW. That was impressive. Nebraska is a decent squad and the Buckeyes just mopped the floor with them for 60 minutes. CORN couldn’t do anything on offense and made too many mistakes. Not good. Ohio St appears to be a team on a mission and very “buttoned up” as the cool kids like to say. Note that the next INT QB Justin Fields throws will be his FIRST. He has 16 TD passes and 7 rushing scores.

ROLL TIDE 59 Ole Miss 31

Raise your hand if you thought Alabama would give up 279 (!) rushing yards to OLE MISS? <crickets> Tua was amazing (again) at QB (418, 6 TD 0 INT) but the ground game was suspect. Their longest rush of the game was just 13 yards. Hard to complain when you watch them score 59 points BUT they certainly appear more beatable than we might have thought before the season started.

Penn St 59 Maryland 0

Yes, guy. Penn St served notice that they are a player in the Big Ten East. Ya, it was just Maryland, but it’s worth mentioning that Penn St is ranked #5 in scoring offense and #2 in scoring defense. They have only played one decent team (Pitt) so it will be fun to see how they perform when the schedule gets tougher.

Wisconsin 24 Northwestern 15

The Badgers finally looked human. They needed a pair of defensive scores to help topple the pesky Wildcats.

Arizona St 24 California 17

The FIGHTING HERMS pulled off another road upset and the PAC 12 no longer has any unbeaten teams.

Auburn 56 Mississippi St 23

An absolute throttling of the Bulldogs. The Tigers just might keep getting better as their talented young QB Bo Nix gets additional experience.

Oklahoma 55 Texas Tech 16

Stop us if you have heard this before…….The offense is unstoppable. We won’t know how good the defense is until they play some explosive Big 12 teams like Texas and Oklahoma St. Stay tuned!

Notre Dame 35 Virginia 20

Very impressive performance considering they were coming off the epic battle with Georgia. Not unthinkable that they could run the table. <grabs popcorn>

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 5

This is how we rate teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site. It is NOT meant to be a “playoff” ranking.

  1. ROLL TIDE – Passing offense is crazy good. Defense showing some holes.
  2. Clemson – A hair above LSU and Ohio St in our rankings. Survived and advanced.
  3. LSU – Next test comes Oct 12 vs Florida.
  4. Ohio St – Crushing and killing. Massive favorite vs Sparty this Saturday.
  5. Georgia – Should have smooth sailing until November.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

Auburn – Looking like more like AUBURN! Fun team to watch.

Notre Dame – Get a much deserved bye week (Bowling Green) before tilt with USC.

Oklahoma – “Best of the rest”. First test comes Oct 12 vs Texas.

Oregon – STEALTH BOMBERS. Capable of running the table.

Texas – Game with Sooners will be appointment television.

BIG GAMES THIS WEEK!

Iowa at Michigan

The Hawkeyes are playing great football but have only been tested once all season. Iowa St gave them all they could handle during their 18-17 win. Michigan cannot afford another Big Ten loss. Did the 52-0 pasting of Rutgers mean that the Wolverines’ offense is turning the corner. Hmm. Color us skeptical.

Auburn at Florida

It’s never easy to bag a win in the SWAMP but the Tigers are rolling right now. Florida has a fine 5-0 record but have played a weak schedule. That’s not their fault, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the big rise in class on Saturday.

Michigan St at Ohio St

The Buckeyes have outscored their opposition to the tune of 262-43. The combined score of the last two meetings between these two squads? 74-9 in favor of Ohio St. Sparty better pack a lunch.

UTSA at UTEP

Just kidding.

Enjoy Week 6!
