College Football Week 7 in Review!

College Football Week 7 in Review

Hey, everyone.

What a week! It was the best card of the year on paper and it lived up to the hype. Great performances, exciting finishes, and we even had a yuuuuuge upset.

Notable games

ROLL TIDE 47 Texas A&M 28

Texas A&M scored the first TD and the last TD of the game but in-between it was 47-14 Alabama. ROLL TIDE did what they always do vs average SEC teams…..Administer a beating. They still have some warts (defense? kicking game) but those aren’t likely to be exposed until they tackle LSU in early November.

South Carolina 20 Georgia 17

This was fantastic TV. We had no dog in the fight but there WAS a dog in the fight. South Carolina was a 21+ point underdog and were down to their 3rd string QB in the second half. All kinds of drama in the fourth quarter and OT and the Gamecocks pulled it out. Everyone is allowed a clunker once in a while (Clemson vs UNC) but Georgia really stubbed their toe in this one. You just have to win this game straight up. They no longer have any margin for error and must run the table to get into the playoff. Highly unlikely, but not impossible.

LSU 42 Florida 28

Came away impressed with both teams. Florida hung in there and actually had a 28-21 lead in the second half. LSU is just impossible to defend and check this out, yo. LSU averaged 10.65 yards per play. Florida had previously allowed between 3.88 and 5.36. The Tigers were so efficient that they only had FOUR THIRD DOWN ATTEMPTS THE ENTIRE GAME. We were (and still are) really high on LSU.

Oklahoma 34 Texas 27

The defenses came to play in the first half as the Sooners led 10-3 at the break, and then the floodgates opened in the second half. Oklahoma outgained Texas 511-310 and probably should have blown the game open in the first half if it weren’t for those dastardly turnovers. Texas gets full marks for competing hard with a depleted roster but this doesn’t look like a team that can beat the Sooners should there be a rematch.

Notre Dame 30 USC 27

The Irish led 17-3 at half and racked up 308 rushing yards to control the game. USC made it interesting in the second half but the outcome was never really in question. Notre Dame has skated through the toughest part of their schedule with just one loss. USC is still very much in the mix in the PAC 12 South.

Penn St 17 Iowa 12

A classic old school SNOT BUBBLER. Penn St looks rock solid on both sides of the ball but we came away impressed with Iowa. Their defense played great but the offense deserved more than 12 points on this night. The problem? The normally reliable Hawkeyes are (-5) in turnovers in their last two losses to Michigan and the Nittany Lions.

MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after WEEK 7

This is how we rate teams based on who would win a theoretical match-up on a neutral site. It is NOT meant to be a “playoff” ranking.

  1. ROLL TIDE – Will cruise to November 9th meeting with LSU (Tennessee, Arkansas).
  2. LSU – Tied with Ohio St in our ratings. Defense not elite but that offense. WHOA NELLIE.
  3. Ohio St – Just might be the most balanced of the elite teams.
  4. Clemson – Mopped floor with Florida St. Several more exhibition games on deck.
  5. Oklahoma – Defense is much improved. Appear to be shoe-in for B12 title game appearance.

Next in line (in alphabetical order)

Auburn – A tough out for almost anyone. Round out our Top 10.

Georgia – Bad loss on Saturday. Still extremely talented and dangerous.

Oregon – NFL-caliber QB and excellent defense. Huge game with Huskies on Saturday.

Penn St – Best shot to upset Ohio St in the regular season.

Wisconsin – Are you sitting down for this? FOUR shutout wins so far.

BIG GAMES THIS WEEK!

Oregon at Washington

The Ducks are in great shape in the PAC 12 standings. Can the Huskies claw their way back into the mix? They already have a pair of conferences losses (Cal, Stanford). The conference could really use a JUGGERNAUT team like Oregon to run the table and at least get in the mix for a playoff spot.

Arizona St at Utah

Both squads are legit contenders in the PAC 12 South. The loser of this game is going to have big problems getting to the conference title game. Utes are WHITE HOT.

Michigan at Penn St

Could be another Big Ten SNOT BUBBLER! Hard hitting, low scoring, competitive. Nothing wrong with that in our book. Can Michigan win their first big road game since the invention of the steam engine?

Enjoy Week 8!
