Colorado St Rams 2022 College Football Preview

July 11, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 3-9

ATS – 4-8

The Rams played pretty well during the first half of the season and won three games including a SHOCK the WORLD moment at Toledo when they triumphed in impressive fashion as two-TD underdogs. They also wiped the floor with San Jose St in a 90000 STAR MEGALOCKS CLOT SHOT SUDDEN ADULT DEATH SYNDROME LOCK winner. The season took an unexpected turn to CRINGEVILLE as they went 0-6 (!) in the 2nd half of the campaign.

The Steve Addazio era has mercifully come to an end and the Rams made a yuuuge scoop in bagging HC Jay Norvell from Nevada.

Let’s go!

Colorado St Rams 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Rams moved the ball reasonably well LY (#4 MW rushing offense, #6 passing) but didn’t SCORE the FOOTBALL efficiently (23.7 PPG, #9 MW). Colorado St will be rolling with youngsters at QB this season and the hope is that redshirt freshman and Nevada transfer Clay Millen can develop into a legit Mountain West signal caller. Millen has good pedigree and knows the system that Norvell wants to run so we’re optimistic. They’re set at RB with the return of 11-year senior David Bailey and A’Jon Vivens (combined 1,076 rush yards LY) and they bring back three of the top-four from last year’s squad in terms of receiving yards. One yuuuuge loss is the impossibly talented TE Trey McBride (90, 1,121, TD) who’s off to dominate in the NFL (Arizona). Norvell also poached a pair of WRs from Nevada. The OL is a rebuilding project full of transfers, so whilst there’s potential to have a good unit, it’ll probably take a month or so to become a cohesive bunch.

DEFENSE

Colorado St did a good job of getting to the QB LY (39 sacks in 12G) (!) but were pretty mediocre when it came to slowing teams down (#9 MW run D, #11 pass efficiency D). New DC Freddie Banks has just six returning starters to work with but the good news is that the majority of key contributors are back for duty. That includes their top-three tacklers and two of their top-three sack producers from 2021. We’re a little worried about the DL and secondary but they’ve added a lot of new blood via the transfer portal so they’ll probably be as good as LY overall, with potential to the upside.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Things appear to be in good order with the return of their fine PK Cayden Camper (25-32, 27-27 XP LY) and KR/PR Thomas Pannunzio who booked a PR TD in 2021. Losing AA punter Ryan Stonehouse definitely stings tho (50.9!, 41.6 net).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The Rams get a great draw from the West missing San Diego St and Fresno St and have a pair of TOMATO CANS on the non-conference schedule (MTSU, SACRAMENTO ST). They’ve got three really nasty road games to deal with tho (Michigan, Washington St, Boise St).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing too spooky is noted.

Season Win Total

Per BetOnline July 11

Over 5.5 -155

Under 5.5 +125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

It all comes down to this…..Do you think the Rams can go 4-4 or better in MW play? We’ll guess, “yes”.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Rams need to improve their HOME COOKING as they’re just 31-24 at home L10Y.

HC Jay Norvell was a good friend to DEGENERATES at Nevada and boasted a solid ATS mark of 33-26 (56%). Norvell was especially effective as a home underdog (7-2).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This team looks pretty interesting. The offense might be better than advertised and there are several good pieces to work with on defense. Colorado St has booked four consecutive losing seasons but finally have a head coach we can get excited about. We’ll likely see these guys in a bowl game but think they’re a year away from doing serious damage in the Mountain West.
