Delaware Blue Hens 2026 College Football Preview
Posted June 2, 2026
2025 Recap
Record – 7-6
ATS – 6-7
A successful debut in the FBS ranks for the Blue Hens. Delaware beat the teams they were supposed to beat, pulled a SHOCK THE WORLD upset over a really good UConn team in September, and earned a bowl bid in year one of BIG BOY FOOTBALL — a genuine accomplishment for a program that was playing FCS ball in 2024. The 68 Ventures Bowl win over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns was the perfect exclamation point on a historic first FBS campaign.
HC Ryan Carty gets full marks, and the Blue Hens roll into 2026 with momentum, experience, and something they didn’t have last year — genuine CUSA title aspirations. Let’s go!
Delaware Blue Hens 2026 Outlook
OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (CUSA):
- Scoring: 29.0 PPG (#2 CUSA)
- Total Offense: 411.6 YPG (#1 CUSA)
- Rushing: 119.1 YPG (#8 CUSA)
- Passing: 292.5 YPG (#1 CUSA)
- Sacks Allowed: 27 (#7 CUSA)
YES, GUY. One of the best Group of Six QBs in the country is back in Nick Minicucci — the dood put up absolutely RIDICULOUS numbers in year one of FBS play (3,683 yards, a 23–7 TD/INT ratio, and 10 rushing TDs). He’s the engine that makes everything go, and his return is the single most important roster development for this program. Delaware led CUSA in both total offense AND passing offense LY — and Minicucci is the primary reason why.
The backfield returns both starting RBs as well — Jo Silver and Viron Ellison Jr combined for over 1,100 rushing yards and 9 TDs, giving the Blue Hens a capable committee to complement the passing game. The run game ranked in the bottom half of CUSA in YPG, but that’s by design in this spread system — they’re perfectly happy letting Minicucci do the heavy lifting.
The THROW GAME loses Kyre Duplessis (60–824, 5 TD), but the cupboard is far from bare. #1 WR Sean Wilson returns as the most important piece (68–877, 3 TD LY), and a deep stable of holdovers plus portal additions gives Minicucci plenty of options. The OL brings back star center Steven Demboski as the anchor, and they’ve got experienced 6‑6 doods at tackle in Noah Rosahac and Anthony Caccese. The interior is less experienced but should hold up well.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (CUSA):
- Scoring Defense: 31.0 PPG (#11 CUSA)
- Total Defense: 405.3 YPG (#10 CUSA)
- Rush Defense: 159.7 YPG (#5 CUSA)
- Pass Defense: 245.6 YPG (#9 CUSA)
- Sacks: 26 (#5 CUSA)
Let’s be real here, yo — the defense was as useful as a SCREEN DOOR ON A SUBMARINE last year. They were near the bottom of CUSA in scoring defense and total defense, and they gave up 50+ points TWICE in November. That’s not ideal. The good news? There are real reasons to expect improvement.
The DL is the starting point for fixing what ails this unit. Nobody on the roster recorded more than 3.5 sacks LY, and generating pressure is clearly priority No. 1. DE Noah Matthews has legit upside, and UAB transfer James Steel — a local product who didn’t see action with the Blazers — could be a sleeper. We’ll have our ear to the ground during fall camp for positive vibes from the front line.
The LB unit is a genuine strength — leading tackler Gavin Moul (112 tackles) returns alongside Blake Matthews, giving the DC stability and production at the second level. The secondary looks improved as well: safety KT Seay (#2 tackles LY) is back, and our DEEP Delaware Blue Hens INSIDERS love the potential of CB Jacquise Alexander (North Dakota St) and Michigan State transfer safety George Mullins, who brings size, range, and real upside to the back end.
The ceiling on this defense is legitimately much higher than what we saw in 2025 — it just depends on whether the DL can generate meaningful PENETRATION.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The PK battle is ongoing after losing reliable Nate Reed (18–24 FG), and we can only hope that Tucker SMACK wins the job and makes a legitimate run at the MEGALOCKS All‑Name Team. The big news at punter is the potential return of Josh Cupitt — a former All‑CAA performer at Towson who missed all of 2025 due to injury. If he’s healthy, he’s one of the best punters in the conference. Return‑game details remain TBD with all the roster movement.
Schedule Analysis
Overall — Two nasty road games at Vanderbilt and Virginia and one LAYUP against something called Merrimack in non‑conference play. The home date with Coastal Carolina is very winnable. The reality of the conference slate is that Delaware draws ALL FOUR BIG ’UNS from CUSA — and two of the toughest (WKU and Kennesaw State) are on the road. Sadly, they’ll miss out on beating up bottom‑feeder Sam Houston.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot — at Kennesaw State (Nov 7)
This is the second leg of back‑to‑back road games, and the Owls are the defending CUSA champs playing at home with motivation to defend their crown. Extra tricky spot if the Blue Hens’ season is already trending sideways by early November. Tread carefully.
Season Win Total
Market consensus – June 2
Over 5.5 -165
Under 5.5 +130
MEGALOCKS says:
Lean: Over
The Blue Hens will be able to SCORE the FOOTBALL and will be a tough out in CUSA action. The schedule is a wee bit on the difficult side, but this absolutely looks like a bowl team.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
The Delaware football program has produced a remarkable collection of NFL QBs for a school of its size — Rich Gannon, Joe Flacco, and Scott Brunner all came from Newark before going on to NFL careers. Flacco won a Super Bowl MVP with the Ravens in 2013. Not bad for a school in the CAA. Nick Minicucci is doing his best to add his name to that distinguished list.
HC Ryan Carty is entering year five in Newark with a 33-17 record (.660) — and that includes making a bowl game in his first FBS season, which is an accomplishment that very few coaches can claim.
Delaware: The First State — first to ratify the Constitution back in 1787. It’s also the corporate capital of America, home to more registered business entities than actual humans. We’re talking roughly 1.06 million people… and well over 2 million corporations and LLCs on the books. So when the Blue Hens started making noise in FBS, it might’ve been the most exciting thing to happen in Delaware since someone figured out how to turn a three-page LLC form into an empire.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
Delaware did more than expected in year one, and the foundation is SOLID heading into year two. Nick Minicucci is the best QB in the conference, the offense is loaded with returning production, and the defense looks improved on paper. The challenging CUSA docket is the primary obstacle standing between the Blue Hens and a title‑game appearance — winning at WKU and Kennesaw St in the same season would be a significant ask for literally anyone not named Alabama circa 2012. Just kidding. Sort of. And they also have to deal with Liberty and Jax St.
We’ll call for another bowl appearance and view Delaware as a genuine LIVE LONGSHOT in the CUSA title race, particularly if the defense can take the expected step forward.
Go Fightin’ Blue Hens!
