2025 Recap

Record – 12-2

ATS – 9-5

What a season.

The Dukes went into BEAST MODE under head coach Bob Chesney in 2025 — rattling off a perfect 8-0 conference record, winning the Sun Belt Championship over Troy, and making the College Football Playoff. They became one of the fastest-rising programs in recent history, appearing in both the CFP and FCS playoffs within the same decade. The run ended in the CFP First Round with a 51-34 loss to Oregon, but finishing 12-2 with a Sun Belt title was an outstanding accomplishment for the program.

Now comes the hard part — replacing a mountain of production on both sides of the football. Oh ya, and they have a new head coach. Let’s dig in and see what things look like heading into the 2026 campaign.

James Madison Dukes 2026 Outlook

OFFENSE

2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):

  • Scoring: 37.1 PPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Total Offense: 452.6 YPG (#3 Sun Belt)
  • Rushing: 241.5 YPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Passing: 211.1 YPG (#8 Sun Belt)
  • Sacks Allowed: 23 (#6 Sun Belt)

QB Alonza Barnett III lit it up last year (2,806 passing yards, 23 TDs, and 15 rushing scores) before transferring to UCF, leaving the Dukes starting from scratch under center. Former Richmond transfer Camden Coleman enters fall camp with a slight edge after redshirting in 2025. He posted strong production at the FCS level and brings mobility plus experience. Memphis transfer Arrington Maiden (6-3, 221) is right behind him and has the size and athleticism to push for the job. New OC Cam Aiken (from ETSU) likes to play with tempo, and he’ll be tasked with developing this new QB room quickly.

The ground game should remain a team strength despite the loss of explosive Wayne Knight (1,373, 6.6, 9 TD), who followed former HC Bob Chesney to UCLA. The cupboard isn’t bare — veteran George Pettaway returns, and FCS All‑American Nick Herman arrives from Drake after a monster 2025 season (1,034, 7.2 YPC, 6 TD).

The WR room took a hit after losing its top producers from 2025, but JMU attacked the portal aggressively. Noah Grevious (728 yards as a redshirt freshman at VMI), Jeremiah Harrison (17.2 YPC at ETSU), and Corey Scott (1,000+ yards at West Florida) headline a promising incoming group that should help replace the departed production. The TE room is a bit of a black hole as we approach press time.

The offensive line needs a portal overhaul as well, with center Zach Greenberg the lone returnee from last year’s key contributors — but they’ve added some serious BEEF, including 6‑8, 315‑pound Kansas State transfer Kaedin Massey. The talent is there — the question is how quickly everyone gels.

DEFENSE

2025 By The Numbers (Sun Belt):

  • Scoring Defense: 18.4 PPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Total Defense: 266.6 YPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Rush Defense: 85.1 YPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Pass Defense: 181.6 YPG (#1 Sun Belt)
  • Sacks: 36 (#4 Sun Belt)

Those are phenomenal defensive numbers — best in the Sun Belt across the board — and replicating that production with so many new faces is the biggest challenge facing new DC Robert Bala.

The DL needs reconstruction work with several departures to the portal and NFL. The name to watch up front is DL Kevin Roberts who had 18 TFL at West Florida LY and drew multiple suitors — if he’s for real, that’s a YUUUGE addition. LB Gannon Weathersby is back as a reliable anchor and will be supplemented by transfers and returning depth pieces. The secondary gets an infusion of talent from the portal spanning FBS, FCS, and Division II — Toledo CB DJ Kelly, safety Javis Mynatt (Texas St), and a small handful of FCS specimens are the key additions to watch.

While replicating last year’s historic production won’t be easy, JMU will still field one of the stronger defenses in the Sun Belt.

SPECIAL TEAMS

There’s excellent continuity in the kicking game with the return of PK Morgan Suarez (14/19 FG) and punter Patrick Rea. New HC Billy Napier told our Sun Belt Special Teams INSIDERS that the PK and punter situation is “mature and reliable,” and we have too much respect for the man to make an off‑color reference to CATE BLANCHETT.

Schedule Analysis

Overall — No killers on the non‑conference slate, but three games that’ll get their attention — Liberty, a trip out west to face San Diego St, and a visit to Storrs to face UConn. The Sun Belt draw is challenging — they open conference play with Old Dominion (A) and Marshall (H), two MASSIVE early tests that’ll set the tone for the season. Also worth noting: the Dukes must play ELEVEN straight games before finally hitting their bye week. They finish at home vs Coastal Carolina.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot — at San Diego St (Sept 19)

That’s a long trip out west, and note that Sun Belt play kicks off the very next week with a YUUUGE road game at Old Dominion. It’s hard to see the Dukes being 100% dialed in when critical FUN BELT action is sitting right on the immediate horizon.

Season Win Total

Market consensus – June 5

Over 8.5 -130

Under 8.5 +110

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under

There’s a new coaching staff and a ton of new faces on both sides of the football, and the schedule doesn’t do them any favors. Preference to the under at this price point.

Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

New HC Billy Napier returns to the Sun Belt after his time with the Florida Gators — and the Fun Belt is where he thrived. At Louisiana, Napier compiled a sparkling 40–12 record over four seasons, winning two Sun Belt titles (2020 and 2021) and capturing the Sun Belt West Division in each of his four years in Lafayette before heading to Gainesville.

Charles Haley stands as JMU’s most famous football alumnus — the first player in NFL history to win five Super Bowl rings (two with the 49ers, three with the Cowboys). Tom Brady eventually got to seven, but Haley got there first. Trivia TORPEDOES, yo.

MEGALOCKS Forecast:

Despite one of the biggest roster overhauls in the country and very low returning production, the Dukes are still a legitimate Sun Belt contender. Billy Napier has won in this league before, and the portal additions give them real talent. The questions are legitimate though — new QB, largely new offensive line, and a defense that’s almost certainly taking a step back. Add in eleven consecutive games without a bye, and winning the FUN BELT again would be a serious accomplishment.
