2024 Recap

Record – 0-12

ATS – 2-9-1

“Feed ’em to the pigs, Errol.”  <Bricktop> <Snatch>

Kent St treated their fans to a record of 0-12 and they only managed to score more than seven points in one of their final four contests. They were shutout three (!) times during the campaign and lost to Tennessee and Penn St in back-to-back weeks by a combined tally of 127-CACK. The Golden Flashes move on with new HC Mark Carney **** and will start the rebuilding process yet again in 2025.

Kent St Golden Flashes 2025 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Golden Flashes ranked dead last in PPG (14) and YPG (233) last season and they’ll have to find a way to cobble together some offense this season without former starting QB Tommy TOUCHDOWN Ulatowski, #1 RB Ky Thomas, and #1 WR Chishon McCray (off to Michigan St). The QB situation is in flux as we approach press time and it’s a battle between backup Devin Kargman who had limited action in 2024 (55%, 3-2 TD to INT) whilst displaying the mobility of a GLACIER, and Fordham transfer CJ Montes. Minnesota transfer RB Jordan Nubin has the potential to be a legit #1 RB but the depth behind him is sketchy. There’s a void of dangerous options at WR/TE as only one player (WR Jay Jay Etheridge) that recorded a TD in 2024 is back for action this season. Maybe one of Kent St’s unheralded transfers such as WR Da’Realyst **** Clark can show some unexpected upside? Only one starter returns up front and recall that the Golden Flashes struggled LY running the football (77 YPG, 2nd worst FBS) and protecting the passer (43 sacks allowed, #126). We expect more struggles from the Kent St offense in 2025.

**** What are we doing?

DEFENSE

There was overwhelming CARNAGE on display last season as Kent St finished DEAD LAST in PPG (44)(!) and YPG (516) and they were only one of two teams to allow over 500 YPG (Oklahoma St). The good news is that they’ve got some experienced doods coming back at LB in Mason Woods (#2 tackler LY) and Canaan Williams (#7) and they also bring back safety Tevin Tucker (#3 tackler). There are serious concerns up front and at CB so the Golden Flashes will need some newcomers to be significant contributors. Players of interest include DE Jamond Mathis (Southern Illinois), DT Thomas Aden (Pittsburgh), and LB Semaj Cross (Lafayette). We anticipate mild improvement on this side of the football but still worry quite a bit about the pass rush.

SPECIAL TEAMS

YIKES. We can’t have a positive outlook in this area as Kent St ranked #131 in the Phil Steele special teams rankings LY and they were a disgusting 5/9 on FG attempts. We don’t see much hope for notable improvement but we’ll see how things go.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – As per usual, Kent St has to deal with a brutal out-of-conference road slate (Texas Tech, Florida St, Oklahoma) and they also have the pleasure of facing MAC powerhouse Toledo in the GLASS BOWL. On the plus side of the ledger, the Golden Flashes miss Miami Ohio and Buffalo on the MAC docket and have a small handful of, dare we say it, winnable games to look forward to in 2025.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Oklahoma (October 4th)

The Golden Flashes have a competitive conference home game up next (Massachusetts) and they’ll be coming off a road beating at the hands of Florida St. There should be a PARENTAL ADVISORY warning on this one.

Season Win Total

Market consensus – August 7

Over 1.5 -180

Under 1.5 +150

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

Kent St opens with something called Merrimack and also play MAC softies UMass, Ball St, and Akron.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Kent St’s last win over an FBS opponent came way back in 2022 (!) when they edged Buffalo in OT (W 30-27).

Former head coach Kenni Burns turned out to be a slightly questionable hire as he matched an uncanny ability to lose games (1-23 over two seasons) with financial weasel tactics that led to an Ohio bank suing him for over $20,000.

In 1954, Kent St participated in the REFRIGERATOR BOWL and fell to Delaware by a final score of 19-7. The Golden Flashes became another team in a long list of powerhouses to participate in that event including Hillsdale, Gustavus Adolphus, Camp Breckinridge, and the College of Idaho. Trivia NUGGETS, yo.

MEGALOCKS Forecast:

As yuuuuge fans of the MAC it pains us to see any program in the conference drop this far into the abyss. It’s going to be a long season for Kent St fans but we’ll be somewhat shocked if they don’t manage to get into the win column. You’ve gotta believe they can find a way to beat Merrimack and they’ve also got some winnable conference games. Let’s hope for the best.

GO FLASHES!
