“I’m gonna let him hit me. I’m gonna tire him out.”
<Muhammad Ali> <Ali, 2006>
Kent St took a brutal beating early in the season. They opened 1-4 and got absolutely smoked by three Power 4 teams by a combined score of 172-24. But the Golden Flashes showed some fight, winning four of their final seven games. Unfortunately, they came up just short of bowl eligibility.
Kent St Golden Flashes 2026 Outlook
OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers:
- Scoring: 21.3 PPG (#9 MAC)
- Total Offense: 294.3 YPG (#10 MAC)
- Rushing: 97.3 YPG (#12 MAC)
- Passing: 197.1 YPG (#5 MAC)
- Sacks Allowed: 27 (#9 MAC)
There’s good news at quarterback as the Flashes return Dru DeShields, who had a strong 2025 campaign (18-3 TD to INT, plus 3 rushing scores). That alone gives Kent St a chance to win most MACtion games. The top two wideouts from last year are gone, but they bring back slot receiver Wayne Harris and the big-bodied Ardell Banks (6-4). The most exciting development is the potential breakout of Da’Realyst Clark, who FLASHED on tape with an 89-yard touchdown reception last season and was one of the best returners in the conference.
The running back room took a major hit after losing its top three options, but Kent St did solid work in the portal. Jakorion Caffey (5-10, 212) from Cincinnati is a promising addition with Big 12 experience. The offensive line should provide some stability, as it returns a veteran group with decent size and experience up front.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers:
- Scoring Defense: 33.6 PPG (#12 MAC)
- Total Defense: 427.4 YPG (#12 MAC)
- Rush Defense: 191.4 YPG (#11 MAC)
- Pass Defense: 236.0 YPG (#13 MAC)
- Sacks: 23 (#7 MAC)
There’s a lot of improvement to be made on this side of the football, as the Golden Flashes ranked near or at the bottom of the MAC in several key statistical categories. Three of their top four tacklers are gone, not to mention their top five sack producers, so it won’t be easy to make meaningful strides.
The defensive line doesn’t blow you away with raw talent, but they return steady DT Thomas Aden, and they’ve added a few transfers who could matter — including DE Semaj Bridgeman (Michigan State). They also have more big bodies than in recent years, which is at least a step in the right direction. The LB group could be in trouble, as they’ll be without the solid pair of Mason Woods and CJ Young, who finished 1–2 in tackles last year. Rocco Nicholl returns after a year at USF and should provide some stability, but depth behind him is a concern.
The secondary offers the most hope. Safeties Derrick Jackson and Joel Cordoba return as two of the team’s top tacklers, and the addition of Davion Pritchard (Pitt) should immediately upgrade the cornerback room.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Kent St has finished #100 or worse in the Phil Steele special‑teams rankings in four of the last five years, but we project meaningful improvement thanks to the presence of PR Wayne Harris (13.1 avg) and the amazing DA’REALYST Clark, who is a big play waiting to happen (28.2 avg, 2 KR TD LY). The Flashes will be working with a new PK and punter, and honestly… that’s a good thing.
Schedule Analysis
There are three road massacres to look forward to in non‑conference action (South Carolina, Ohio State, USF), but we feel good about their chances to beat something called Wofford. The MAC schedule is going to be a chore: whilst they miss Toledo, they still have to tangle with the other conference BIG ’UNS, and they also travel out to California (!) to play newcomer Sacramento St.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Sacramento St (Oct 30)
Speaking of the Hornets, Kent St will be playing their third road game in four weeks and heading out to the communist stronghold of California on short rest. They’ll also be coming off the YUUUGE rivalry game with Akron, with a bye week up next. That’s a brutal scheduling spot for the Flashes.
Season Win Total
Market consensus – June 12
Over 3.5 -105
Under 3.5 -125
MEGALOCKS says:
Lean: Over
They’ve got six or seven very winnable games, but of course there are also a bunch of automatic losses baked into the cake. Still, the current market price feels a bit cheap.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
NFL legend Antonio Gates played basketball at Kent St (he was a key player on their 2001–02 Elite Eight team) and never played a down of college football. Despite going undrafted, he became one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history with the Chargers and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2025.
Julian Edelman started his college career as a quarterback at Kent St before switching positions and becoming a Super Bowl MVP wide receiver with the Patriots, and one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets. Not a bad career pivot, yo.
Bowl History Nugget — Kent St has tasted bowl victory only once, and that came in the 2019 Frisco Bowl, when they outgunned Utah State 51–41. A rare — and glorious — postseason moment for the Golden Flashes. We DEMAND the sequel.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
Head coach Mark Carney, not to be confused with the despotic Supreme Leader of Canada, did a great job with the Golden Flashes last season. Kent St looks much improved on offense heading into 2026, but they’ll need the defense to take a significant step forward if they plan on making a real run at bowl eligibility. We think they’ll fall just a bit short of a bowl bid, but we’re very happy to say they’re trending in the right direction.
Go Flashes!
