Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2022 College Football Preview

June 24, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 3-9

ATS – 4-8

Things started out in decent fashion with a pair of wins in their first four games but they followed that up with a five-game losing streak, and that was ALL SHE WROTE. It was a sad end to the successful Skip Holtz era and we shouldn’t forget that he led them to SIX consecutive winning seasons.

Let’s see what new HC Sonny Cumbie has to work with heading into 2022.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

The THROW GAME wasn’t that bad in 2021 (263 YPG, #35 FBS) but the ground attack was NEUTERED on a regular basis (#106). The offense will look different this year as Sonny Cumbie brings his high-powered passing attack to Ruston and he’s got a pair of Power 5 transfer QBs (Downing, McNeil) that each have experience in this offense. Three of their top-four WRs return for duty including the DIMINUTIVE Smoke Harris and there should be fine numbers posted by this group. Greg Garner is the leading RB back in the mix and he did ok with limited action LY (223, 3 TD). The RB room looks like a weakness but this will be a more pass-happy operation. The OL returns three starters and 80+ career starts but they’ll need to learn a new system.

DEFENSE

The Bulldogs were atrocious for the 2nd consecutive season and yielded 34 PPG (#114 FBS) and 434 YPG (#106) whilst booking a meager 20 sacks (#101). New DC Scott Power has eight returning starters to work with including four starters on the DL. The LB group brings back #1 tackler and 2nd Team C-USA honoree Tyler Grubbs and three starters are back in the secondary. We have no idea where the pass rush is going to come from and that is our biggest concern with the stop unit.

SPECIAL TEAMS

They’re set at PK with the return of Jacob Barnes (17-21 FG, 5-8 40+ LY) but will need to find a new punter. The PR and KR situation looks decent with Smoke Harris and Solomon Lewis.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The Bulldogs have two Power 5 road games (Clemson (!), Missouri) and only play five games at home. WKU isn’t on the docket but they face UAB and UTSA.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – September 24th – at South Alabama

This will be their 3rd road test in four weeks following a BODY BAG GAME with Clemson.

Season Win Total

Over 4.5 +100

Under 4.5 -130

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over

There’s more upside than downside with this squad and you gotta think they’ve got a small handful of wins in the bag. Right?

MEGAmazing Tidbit

Louisiana Tech will play this season with heavy hearts given the recent passing of Jaylon Ferguson who holds the record for most sacks in an FBS career (45).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

GET CHO POPCONE.

Louisiana Tech promises to be a fun team to watch with a passing attack that likes to go FREAKY FREAKY all night long. They might not gel right away, and the defense still looks a bit sketchy, but they’re more than capable of pulling a decent-sized upset along the way.

Go Bulldogs!
