Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2025 College Football Preview

Posted June 6, 2025

2024 Recap

Record – 5-8

ATS – 8-5

The Bulldogs continued their slippery slide into the PIT of MEDIOCRITY and booked their 4th losing season in a row. They had multiple close shaves including a pair of overtime losses but it was still a disappointing result for the Ruston faithful. Louisiana Tech managed to slither their way into a bowl game despite finishing the regular season with a record of 5-7 **** but they were pasted by the juggernaut Army Black Knights in the Independence Bowl.

**** Louisiana Tech took the place of Marshall who was savaged by departures. It was deemed “medically unsafe” for the Herd to participate in their bowl game with so few players, which is ironic since just a few years back, they had no trouble mandating that all players receive the DEATH JAB ^^^^.

^^^^ Three cheers for turbo cancer, strokes, and irreversible heart damage.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 2025 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Bulldogs were a disappointment on offense LY (#117 FBS rushing offense, #74 passing) and they only managed to score more than 14 points twice in their final seven games. It certainly didn’t help that it was OPEN SEASON on the QB (41 sacks allowed, #123 FBS). There’s good news to report heading into 2025 as the Bulldogs retain QB Evan Bullock who did a decent job (66%,14-3 TD to INT) despite being sacked 33 (!) times and getting very little support from the run game. Blake Baker is a capable backup so things look good at the most important position. The top-two RBs are back for duty (Wiggins, Givens) and they combined for over 800Y and 6 rushing TD LY. Star WR Tre Edwards is off to Kentucky and he leaves a yuuuge hole (85-989, 6 TD) but almost all of the other key wideouts are back and note that TE Eli Finley is ready for a breakout campaign (314, 12.6, 2 TD). The OL has got to be better this season and they return a pair of starters at C and RT, and note the transfer of Jonathan Denis (320 pounder) who adds some beef to the interior. Former OC Tony Franklin is back in Ruston (2010-2012) and we think he’s got enough talent on board to coax improvement out of the offense.

DEFENSE

Defense definitely wasn’t a problem for Louisiana Tech LY as they were sound vs the run (136 YPG, #1 CUSA, #43 FBS) and stout vs the pass (#3 CUSA pass efficiency D, #20 FBS). The LB group is one of the best in the conference as the majority of the two-deep is back for action including former LSU specimen Kolbe Fields (#2 tackles, 9 TFL LY). The secondary is deep and it’s led by returning stalwarts safety Jacob Fields (#4 tackles, 2 INT) and CB Cedric Woods (5 PD). The biggest question on the entire team might be the DL as the Bulldogs will be without five of their top-six from LY’s unit including leader sack producer David Blay (6). We’re also not thrilled with the change at DC as Jeremiah Johnson did and excellent job with the stop unit in 2024 and he’s off to Coastal Carolina. We’ll call this defense down a notch from what we witnessed in 2024 but they’ve still got some talented doods inhabiting the back two levels.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Yikes.

The kicking game was mediocre LY (15/22 FG, #117 net punting) and there’s no indication that we should expect major improvement this year. Louisiana Tech needs to find replacements at KR and PR which isn’t great since they got excellent production out of the return game in 2024.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s a bit of a mixed bag. The Bulldogs have a pair of nasty road affairs to contend with (LSU, Washington St) but they’ve got a reasonable shot to win both of the other non-conference games (SE Louisiana, Southern Miss). The CUSA schedule isn’t kind as they’ve gotta deal with three CUSA titans (WKU, Sam Houston, Liberty) in the second half of the year, but at least they’ll get every one of those games at home in Ruston.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Washington St (Nov 15)

Not only is this a conference sandwich spot (at Blue Hens, Liberty) but the Bulldogs have to fly from the communist garrison of Delaware on the east coast all the way to the middle of nowhere. Pullman might be near Alaska, we’re not sure.

Season Win Total

Market consensus June 6

Over 5.5 -155

Under 5.5 +125

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

That looks about right. We give the Bulldogs a 50/50 shot to make a bowl game as we approach press time.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Head coach Sonny Cumbie is on the hot seat and it probably feels like LIQUID HOT MAGMA. Cumbie has a record of 11-26 (!) over the L3Y. Recall that former HC Skip Holtz booked six (!) consecutive seasons with at least seven wins, and he probably would’ve delivered a seventh one in 2020 if the season hadn’t been shortened due to the sniffles.

Louisiana Tech made seven consecutive bowl appearances from 2014-2020.

Ruston is sometimes referred to as RUS VEGAS as it’s a lively city featuring vibrant nightlife and plenty of RANDOM HOTTIES.

MEGALOCKS Forecast:

Is this the season that the Bulldogs FINALLY turn it around? They were a CUSA powerhouse for a number of years but they’ve recently fallen on hard times. We’ve got a good feeling about the offense and their bowl hopes likely hinge on the defense finding a way to dig deep and not get run over by opposing ground attacks. There’s a small handful of very winnable games on the schedule so we’ll call for six wins and a return to bowl action. Good luck, Bulldogs!
