2024 Recap

Record – 4-8

ATS – 4-8

FEAR THE TURTLE got off to a good start as per usual and won three of their first four games, and their only loss came by three points to a feisty Michigan St squad. And then the season took an unfortunate detour to TURD TOWN USA as Maryland only managed to win one more game the rest of the season. That victory was a very exciting home win over once-mighty USC, but the Terps really folded after that game and essentially mailed it in the rest of the way.

Maryland Terrapins 2025 Outlook

OFFENSE

There’s definitely an air of excitement heading into the 2025 season as Maryland will be trotting out a highly-recruited true freshman to lead the offense. QB Malik Washington is a dual-threat specimen with a LASER ROCKET arm so it’s an exciting time to be a Maryland fan. The RB corps doesn’t appear to be overwhelming but sophomore Nolan Ray (374, 2 TD) definitely has some upside and there are some talented youngsters behind him on the depth chart, so it’s not impossible that the RB room is better than we think. The WR/TE group is hurting after the departure of their top-three targets including star WR Tai Felton (1,124, 9 TD) and in our view they’ll need former Oklahoma WR Jalil Farooq to emerge as a #1 threat for the THROW GAME to be effective. Farooq had a pair of productive seasons with the Sooners but missed almost all of last year due to injury. We’re not sure how much upside holdovers like Octavian Smith and Shaleak Knots bring to the table but the Terps have surprised us at WR a few times in the past. It’s worth noting that Maryland scooped up Georgia St TE Dorian Fleming and he was excellent with the Panthers in 2024 (558, 6 TD). The offensive line will feature at least four upperclassmen starters with good size and they have the look of an improved unit according to our DEEP MARYLAND INSIDERS. We expect improvement in year one of the Washington Era but think the offense will struggle with consistency.

DEFENSE

The Terps were pretty good against the run LY (137 YPG, #46) but they were poor by their recent standards vs the pass (#99 pass efficiency D) and had all kinds of trouble achieving PENETRATION (14 sacks, #128). We’re not thrilled with the look of the DL after losing a pair (!) of doods to the NFL and they don’t have a lot of size on the interior. The LB unit looks pretty good with the return of veterans Daniel Wingate (#3 tackles, 6.5 TFL) and Michael Harris but it’ll be tough to replace the leadership of leading tackler Ruben Hyppolite who’s off to the NFL. The secondary still looks a bit suspect but they’ve got a productive leader on the back end in FS Jalen Huskey and they’ll need the pair of transfer CBs and projected starters Jamare Glasker (Wake Forest) and Dontay Joyner (Arkansas St) to adapt to Big Ten play quickly. We don’t have high hopes for the stop unit but maybe new DC Ted Monachino can help these guys overachieve in 2025?

SPECIAL TEAMS

RUH ROH.

Maryland has been poor on special teams the L2Y (#113, #104 per Phil Steele) and the only solid piece heading into the season appears to be punter Bryce McFerson (40.9 net). It’s possible that they found a gem in former Richmond PK Sean O’Haire who was NAILS with the Spiders LY (12/12 FG) but they need a lot of help in the return game.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – Don’t look now but Maryland has a shot to open the season 3-0 as they’ve got a nice selection of TOMATO CANS lined up (FAU, Northern Illinois, Towson) before Big Ten play begins. We love the list of conference assignments as they avoid Ohio St, Oregon, and Penn St, and they get to face mighty Michigan at home the week before the Wolverines battle Ohio St.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Michigan St (Nov 29)

This will be the Terps’ 3rd road game in four weeks and it comes after a TRIUMVIRATE of MEAT GRINDERS (at Rutgers, at Illinois, Michigan). If Maryland’s season is down the tubes at this point it could be blowout city, yo.

Season Win Total

Market consensus July 28

Over 4.5 +100

Under 4.5 -130

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

Even if they start 3-0 they’ve gotta book two Big Ten wins to hit the ‘over’ and that won’t be easy. We’d be tempted to take an ‘under 5’ but don’t see one in the market as we approach press time.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Even though Maryland likes to schedule a bunch of TURDS in non-conference play it’s still very impressive that they’ve gone 15-0 (!) in those games since 2021 (11-4 ATS). DEGENERATE NATION, take note.

Head coach Mike Locksley is a horrific 21-35 ATS (38%) in Big Ten games.

On March 26, 2024, the cargo ship Dali lost power and collided with a support pier of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing a catastrophic collapse. It’s incredible how the “accident” occurred as the ship turned directly into a main support pier, almost like it was done intentionally or by sabotage. The federal government has committed to fully fund the rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge through a $100 billion disaster relief package passed by Congress in late 2024. $18 dollars will go towards the bridge and the rest will go to fund orgies and cocaine parties for US Senators.

MEGALOCKS Forecast:

This year’s edition of Maryland football doesn’t inspire much confidence but there’s no doubt that we’re excited to see true freshman QB Malik Washington go to work. The weapons surrounding Washington look fairly average and the defense is going to struggle to make any meaningful improvement. The good news is that the schedule is extremely favorable and if they can sweep the soft three-game set of games to open the season, then who knows, maybe they can find a way to get to six wins and bowl eligibility? We think they’ll fall a bit short but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done!
