MEGALOCKS BLOG – The TOP 10 after Week 8 – October 23, 2017

Hi everyone !

Let’s take a look at the MEGALOCKS TOP 10 after week 8.

It is critical to mention that our ratings change, fluctuate and PERCOLATE more than a typical set of ratings. We want to able to POUNCE when necessary and not wait multiple weeks for ratings to catch-up to performance. We use numbers as a basic starting point and do not make selections based solely on rankings or power ratings. We just like to have something to start with as we start the handicapping process.

Ranking based on our projections on a neutral field. NOT what some politicians, bakers and candlestick-makers on a “selection committee” may think. NOT a college football playoff ranking.

After week 8. Week 6 rating in (  ). (were on hiatus last week)

  1. ROLL TIDE (1) (ROLLING….LSU, Miss St, Auburn and Georgia (?) still left)
  2. Georgia (3) (by a nose…..Can they finally spank Florida this week ?)
  3. Clemson (2) (need QB to be healthy; big trouble if limited mobility)
  4. Penn St (4) (coin toss with Ohio St on neutral site BUT at Ohio St this week)
  5. Ohio St (5) (smashing teams to bits BUT not sold on competition)
  6. Notre Dame (-) (line value on these guys might finally be gone)
  7. Washington (6) (by a nose…maybe drinking the Husky Kool-Aid ?)
  8. Wisconsin (7) (like them a lot but the schedule makes us pause)
  9. TCU (10) (sneaky tough game at Iowa St this week ?)
  10. Oklahoma St (-) (gutsy road win vs Texas)

So close you can smell it…..Virginia Tech, Stanford

FIRESIDE CHAT with MEGALOCKS

Gather around. Grab the marshmallows. It’s FIRESIDE CHAT time.

We are REALLY thankful for all of our dedicated members and readers that are smart, reasonable and not HOT-HEADED PSYCHOS.

We are not perfect but just might be the most objective viewers of college football. We have no love (except maybe Miami. And service academy football) and no hatred. As you know we LOVE the sport. We try to avoid topics that make “fans” lose their minds and take things personally. With that said…..Here is a HEISMAN TROPHY FIRESIDE CHAT. We only do this because we KNOW that our readers are mentally BALANCED and are upstanding citizens that would NEVER send a HITMAN after us if they did not agree with our HOT TAKES. Right ?

The Heisman Trophy is awarded to the “most outstanding college football player”. Right away you have a problem because “most outstanding” is a matter of opinion. Voters love this because they can be complete TOOLS and put no effort into what they are doing and STILL justify their opinion. “Hey, it’s the EYE TEST.” <barf>

These voters are very similar to many Board of Directors members in public (and non-public) companies. They just want to get in and get out of meetings, collect the paycheck and brag to their pompous windbag friends about the big decisions they made. Cool story, bro.

Our position is as follows. 1) The player INDEED must be outstanding 2) The team must accomplish something significant (or a near-miss) and most importantly 3) DO NOT MAKE UP YOUR MIND IN SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER. These three rules should apply in most cases but we understand there are exceptions.

Have some respect for the task you are entrusted with you donkeys.

2016 Heisman

Was Lamar Jackson a worthy Heisman winner ? 100% absolutely. Should the decision have been all but made in October before the Cardinals barfed away their season and got bombed by Houston and Kentucky ? NO.

For the record – Here are the 2016 Heisman voting results.

  1. Lamar Jackson (100% worthy but award winner decided by “experts” way too soon)
  2. Deshaun Watson
  3. Baker Mayfield
  4. DeDe Westbrook (a WR. On a loaded team. Perfect patsy to make sure Sooners’ votes were split)
  5. Jabrill Peppers (must have been that one interception and one kick return TD. Or the 4 sacks. Or the “versatility” shown vs Hawaii and Rutgers. May not have even been the best player on the Michigan defense)

The 2016 MEGALOCKS Heisman rankings

  1. Deshaun Watson (amazing stats AND heart of a champion)
  2. Baker Mayfield (incredible stats AND won Big 12; losses to Ohio St and Houston)
  3. Lamar Jackson (video game stats and incredible talent; team barfed in last two weeks; best win was vs Florida St who allowed 25 points per game)
  4. Dalvin Cook (T-10 in the “expert” voting…..<haaaa> <falls off chair> <throws up in disgust> <laughs again> )
  5. Jake Browning (12-1 regular season and PAC 12 champs; 43 TD passes)

Road to the 2017 Heisman Trophy

So here we are again. 2017. The award has been pretty much anointed to a running back because that is just the NARRATIVE we have this season. “It’s a year for the running back”. “No quarterback has risen to the top”.

How about we wait until November ? Penn St RB Saquon Barkley is the odds-on favorite as we go to press, or at the very least, a slight favorite over another RB Bryce Love of Stanford. Does this make sense ? Like, for real, like ?

Barkley is on a loaded team. He is almost certainly going to be a star in the NFL – but is that what the vote should be based upon ? He ranks #18 in rushing yards (!) in the FBS, although to be fair, he also has 32 receptions and returned a kickoff for a TD. Bottom line. Awesome player. Is he the “most outstanding” to the point where he should be a LOCK in OCTOBER before they even play OHIO ST ? With 757 rushing yards ? Bryce Love has an amazing 1,387 (!) yards rushing at 10 yards per carry (!) and has 147+ in every game. Slight edge over Barkley right now.

So what say you, MEGALOCKS ?

It is too early. Wait until Barkley gets through Ohio St and Sparty (and Wisconsin ?). Wait until Stanford faces the Huskies, Cougars and Irish. But to be fair – here is our take. Can’t just scream and yell without sticking the old neck out, yo.

Right now.

  1. Baker Mayfield (right in thick of Big 12 race; 19-2 TD to INT; 74% completions; carrying team on his back)
  2. JT Barrett (ya, narrative he cannot throw. K. 21-1 (!) TD to INT ratio, 67% completions and 5 rushing TDs; needs to play great down the stretch; competition has been very sketchy)
  3. Lamar Jackson (2,478 passing yards – 17 TD; 868 rushing yards – 11 TD; Just amazing to watch and team would be near-garbage without him; need to win out impressively vs soft schedule)
  4. Mason Rudolph (19-4 TD to INT; 11 yards per attempt; right there in Big 12)
  5. Bryce Love (10 yards per carry just too much to ignore)
  6. Saquan Barkley (can move up big time with big games vs Ohio St and Sparty)
  7. Will Grier (WV QB has an impossible 26-5 TD to INT ratio with 66% completions; includes games vs Virginia Tech and TCU)
  8. Jonathan Taylor (over 1,100 yards rushing and 11 TDs for Badgers. 1,100 > 757)
