Year two of the Jeff Lebby experience was definitely a step in the right direction as the Bulldogs more than doubled their win total from the ugly 2024 campaign. Mississippi St actually started out 4-0 (!) but couldn’t bag more than one SEC victory (Arkansas). That said, they gave some teams a heck of a fight including Tennessee (lost by 7 in OT), Florida (fell by 2), and mighty Texas (lost by 7 in OT).
Can Lebby get these guys to a bowl game in 2026?

OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (SEC):
- Scoring: 30.4 PPG (#8)
- Total Offense: 399.2 YPG (#8)
- Rushing: 158.0 YPG (#9)
- Passing: 241.2 YPG (#8)
- Sacks Allowed: 45 (#16, dead last)
The college football world got a glimpse of the future last year when devastating true freshman QB KaMario Taylor got some playing time and showed why he’s destined to be one of the best dual-threat QBs in the SEC (56%, 5-1 TD to INT; 458 rush, 8 TD). Taylor will get better with experience, and his raw athletic ability will help the Bulldogs get out of a lot of jams.
All-MEGALOCKS Team member RB FLUFF Bothwell is back to lead the RB group and he had a fine 2025 season despite missing time due to injury (677, 6 TD), and the Bulldogs have some intriguing depth including a pair of highly-rated freshmen. The WR/TE room took a hit with 1,000-yard WR Brenen Thompson and TE Seydou Traore being snagged in the NFL Draft, but they’ve got WR2 Anthony Evans back for battle (831, 12.4, 4 TD) along with a few other promising holdovers and transfers. The Bulldogs really need a deep threat to emerge to stretch the defense, and maybe Missouri transfer Marquis Johnson is that dude, as he’s got track speed that must be respected.
The offensive line is still a work in progress but they’ve upgraded the overall talent level and have a pair of 340-pounders (!) projected to start at LT and RT.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (SEC):
- Scoring: 30.2 PPG (#15)
- Total Defense: 409.3 YPG (#15)
- Rushing Defense: 186.3 YPG (#16, dead last)
- Passing Defense: 223.0 YPG (#10)
- Sacks: 21 (#14)
Last year the stench could be detected from Starkville all the way to El Paso, Texas. The Bulldogs were pathetic across the board and they’ll need to show some improvement if they wanna make a postseason appearance.
We project the defensive line to be tougher vs. the run this year as they’ve got a few sturdy pieces in the middle in NT Kalvin Dinkins (6-2, 320) and DT Jaray Bledsoe (6-4, 315; 5.5 TFL), but our Mississippi St INSIDERS still worry about the lack of proven PENETRATORS up front. We’re not thrilled with the overall talent at LB but Zakari Tillman is a lethal missile, and the Bulldogs hope that a few of the transfer portal specimens such as Amaree Williams (Florida St) can rise to the occasion.
We’re probably in the minority, but we don’t think the secondary is in bad shape as they’ve got at least three legitimate components including CB Kelley Jones (11 PBU, 2 INT), safety Isaac Smith, and former Rice Owls safety Marcus Williams.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Yes, guy.
We’re very pleased with how things look in this department as the Bulldogs feature one of the premier kicking combinations in the SEC in All-Galaxy PK Kyle Ferrie (17/20 FG, 44/44 XP), punter Ethan Pulliam (46.8 avg, 41.7 net), and PR Anthony Evans (13.4).
Schedule Analysis
Overall – There are a pair of guaranteed blowout wins to look forward to as they get to CREMATE Tennessee Tech and ULM, but the road test in the crime-ridden communist hotbed of Minneapolis will be a battle. The SEC schedule is a nightmare as they’ve got a ton of nasty games on the docket including ROLL TIDE (H), Oklahoma (H), Texas (A), and Ole Miss (A).
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Minnesota (Sept 12)
If they make it out of their hotel without being firebombed by a mob of freaks, they’ll still have to face a very underrated Golden Gophers squad. Also note that Minnesota has a game with Akron up next while Mississippi St has the YUUUGE SEC opener at South Carolina directly ahead.

If they lose on the road at Minnesota, they’ll have to win three SEC games just to reach five wins, and that feels like a very tall order. Even finding two conference wins will be tough thanks to that schedule, making Under the look here.

MEGAmazing Tidbits
Starkville’s “StarkVegas” nickname started as pure shade. Outsiders and SEC rivals originally used it as a joke about the town’s size and nightlife options. Mississippi St fans did what SEC fanbases do best: they took the insult, slapped it on T-shirts, and turned it into official branding. If you don’t like hot chicks and good times, that’s on you, bro.
The Bulldogs’ only appearance in the SEC Championship Game came back in 1998 when they fell to Tennessee by a score of 24-14.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
The Bulldogs won only a single SEC game last year, but they took a lot of those contests right down to the wire and showed they weren’t far from turning close calls into wins. There’s plenty of excitement in Starkville heading into this season thanks to a potential star-in-the-making at quarterback and a roster that’s upgraded from a talent standpoint. That said, the schedule is a major obstacle to their ceiling, and simply making a bowl game would be a legitimately impressive accomplishment — one we’ll be cheering for them to pull off.
