Oklahoma Sooners 2025 College Football Preview
Posted July 24, 2025
2024 Recap
Record – 6-7
ATS – 6-7
The Sooners got off to a good start in their MAIDEN VOYAGE in the SEC and they sat at 4-1 after slithering past Auburn in the SEC road opener. Things started to get ugly the next week as they were drilled by Texas (L 34-3) and they only beat one more FBS opponent the rest of the way. Who did they beat you ask? Well, they smoked ROLL TIDE by a score of 24-3 and at least that gave their fans something to cheer about. Oklahoma squeaked into bowl season with a mark of 6-6 and were upended by Navy in a classic Armed Forces Bowl (L 21-20), and that meant a losing record for the 2nd time in three years.
Oklahoma Sooners 2025 Outlook
OFFENSE
The offense was disgusting last season thanks to a TURD COCKTAIL, a brutal combination of mass injuries and inexperience at WR and OL, with a light dash of inconsistent quarterback play. We’ve got great news to report as the Sooners scooped up star QB John Mateer from Washington St who had a phenomenal season with the Coogs in 2024 (29-7 TD to INT; 826 rush, 15 TD!). Mateer’s THROW GAME options look decent with the return of WR Deion Burks who missed a good chunk of the 2024 season due to injury and the addition of Javonnie Gibson who had an excellent campaign with Arkansas Pine-Bluff LY (1,215, 17.4, 9 TD). The RB room is STACKED with the return of their top-three options including Jovantae Barnes (577, 5 TD) who really got going before getting injured in November LY, and the addition of, wait for it, former Cal Golden Bear RB Jaydn Ott who rushed for over 1,300 yards (12 TD) in 2023. The offensive line was a total joke last season (50 sacks, LAST FBS) but they were a motley crew ravaged by injuries and this year they feature over 100 career starts, and a clean bill of health as we approach press time. Yup, we expect much better things from the Oklahoma offense in 2025.
DEFENSE
The Sooners were rock solid on defense LY (#29 scoring defense, #19 total defense) and whilst they lose arguably their best two defenders in all-Universe LB Danny Stutsman and star safety Billy Bowman (both off to the NFL) they’re still one of the most talented stop units in the SEC. The DL looks fantastic as they retain three starters including devastating DE R Mason Thomas (9 sacks, 11 QBH) and it seems almost unfair that they added Marvin Jones Jr from Florida St (4 sacks LY). Kip Lewis is back at LB (#3 tackles) and Oklahoma managed to steal the ultra-productive LB Kendal Daniels from Oklahoma St (#2 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 7 PBU). It stings to lose the aforementioned Bowman at safety but the Sooners are still talented on the back end with guys like CB Eli Bowen and safety Robert Spears-Jennings (#2 tackles) back for duty.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Sooners need to reload in the kicking game and they appear to have solved the issue with the addition of PK Tate Sandell (19/23 FG, 35/36 XP LY, UTSA) and punter Jacob Ulrich (46.0!). They could use some additional juice in the return game.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – The Sooners have three MORTAL LOCKS in non-conference action but the fourth one is a DOOZY as they host mighty Michigan in week two. The set of SEC assignments is very challenging as they’ve gotta face Texas (N), South Carolina (A), Ole Miss (H), ROLL TIDE (A), and LSU (H). The good news is that if they can find a way to get past Michigan they’ve got a really good shot to open the season at 5-0.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Temple (Sept 13)
The Sooners have to travel to the communist hotbed of Philadelphia in between dates with Michigan and Auburn, and note that HC Brent Venables is 3-7-1 ATS (30%) as a road favorite. We don’t think we’ll be lining up to lay a ton of points in this one.
Season Win Total
Market consensus July 24
Over 6.5 -180
Under 6.5 +150
MEGALOCKS says:
Lean: Over
Very similar to Florida, the Sooners have a loaded roster and should be able to exceed the win total despite the grueling schedule.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
Head coach Brent Venables has done a good job of protecting home field (15-4 SU) but he hasn’t been able to crack the code ON THE HIGHWAY (6-8 SU) or in neutral site games (1-5 SU).
Who’s got the longest winning streak in the history of college football? Funny you should ask. It’s the Oklahoma Freaking Sooners who won 47 (!) consecutive games (1953-1957) and they booked 23 (!!) shutouts during that amazing run.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
The offense was a HORROR SHOW last year and the Sooners still managed to win six games. Heading into 2025, the defense looks really good and we expect a lot more from the offense under the leadership of QB John Mateer. The schedule doesn’t do them any favors, but on the other hand, would anyone really want to have OKLAHOMA on their schedule? It seems very likely that the Sooners will exceed expectations although it’s probably a bit much to think that they’ll make the SEC Championship Game. This is gonna be a fun team to watch, yo. GET CHO POPCONE!
BOOMER SOONER!
