3. (Figurative, sports) A lingering aura of mediocrity or dysfunction that follows a program after sustained poor results. Example: “You could smell the stank coming off that program from three states away.”
That pretty much sums it up. The Boilermakers knocked over a pair of TOMATO CANS in a stunning 2-0 start, but then the season fell into the abyss as they lost ten games in a row to end the year. That was a 100% improvement over the train wreck of 2024 (1-11), but there’s still a lot of work to do in West Lafayette.

OFFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Big Ten):
- Scoring: 18.8 PPG (#16)
- Total Offense: 343.6 YPG (#14)
- Rushing: 126.4 YPG (#14)
- Passing: 217.2 YPG (#11)
- Sacks Allowed: 24 (#12)
The Boilermakers are rolling with Ryan Browne at QB once again, and despite how thrilled everyone on the coaching staff might say they are, the reality is that Browne has a 13-14 TD to INT ratio during his three-year stint with Purdue. Browne had his only somewhat productive season as a scrambler last year (206, 4 TD), so we suppose that’s something. There are other options on the depth chart that’ll probably get a good look before the season is out.
BOILER UP has the makings of a decent-looking RB committee given the addition of FAME Ileboi (Minnesota), Jerrick Gibson (Texas), and the return of RB2 Antonio Harris. The top-three WRs need to be replaced, but there wasn’t much excitement created from the crop in 2025. Two guys that should play a significant role this year are versatile veteran WR Xavier Townsend (Iowa State), along with De’NYLON Morrissette, who missed last season due to injury. We noticed during our endless time at Big Ten Media Days that he was front and center, and the former Georgia Bulldog (2022) will get every opportunity to be a big factor this year. Stay tuned.
The offensive line needs to be reconstructed under a new OL coach, but they brought in several experienced Power 4 transfers and have good size across the board. There’s hope here.
DEFENSE
2025 By The Numbers (Big Ten):
- Scoring: 31.8 PPG (#16)
- Total Defense: 423.5 YPG (#17)
- Rushing Defense: 181.8 YPG (#16)
- Passing Defense: 241.7 YPG (#18, dead last)
- Sacks: 24 (#12)
There’s a lot of work to be done on this side of the football as well, as Purdue finished at or near the bottom of the Big Ten in several major statistical categories. That said, they went from allowing a despicable 40 PPG in 2024 to 32 PPG a season ago.
Things actually look okay up front as they’ve got a decent mix of holdovers and transfer portal specimens that should mold into a decent unit. They’ve got good size on the interior, and some veteran dudes on the outside in DE CJ Madden, DE Trey Smith, and DE Elo Modozie (Georgia, Army). We don’t see any difference-makers on paper, but there’s good depth. The middle of the stop unit is well-manned with the return of talented sophomore LB Charles Correa, who filled up the boxscores last year (96 tackles, 3 sacks, 7.5 TFL), and the addition of some promising transfers.
Purdue has been getting ROASTED through the air the last number of seasons and they’ll be relying heavily on new faces to help turn the tide. Safeties Justin Denson (Michigan State) and Jaden Mangham (Michigan), along with stud CB/NB MISTER Clark (FIU), will be welcome additions to the back end.
SPECIAL TEAMS
RUH-ROH.
Purdue was decent in this area in 2025, finishing just outside the top-50 in the Phil Steele special teams rankings. However, they’ve gotta replace everyone, including the guy who hoses down the equipment, so this might be a problem area in 2026.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – There’s a layup to begin the proceedings (Indiana St), but the other two non-conference games are tough (Wake Forest, Notre Dame). The Big Ten docket is fair. They miss Michigan, Ohio St and Oregon, but have to go on the HIGHWAY to battle Indiana, Penn St, and Iowa.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at UCLA (Sept 19)
Purdue has to make the trip out to the communist stronghold of Los Angeles, and they’ve got a big home date with Notre Dame up next. Can we call that the BATTLE of INDIANA?

This looks like a better overall roster, but there aren’t too many winnable games on the schedule. Four wins aren’t out of the question, but we’ll take a pass for now.

Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, earned his degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue in 1955. He was joined by 27 other Boilermaker astronauts — far more than any other university. No other school comes close. CRADLE of ASTRONAUTS, yo.
The Boilermakers have lost 15 (!) consecutive road games. Their last victim? Virginia Tech, near the start of the 2023 season.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
It’s been a rough three-year stretch for Purdue, as they’ve only won seven games since the start of the 2023 season. But the good news is they’ve got a solid head coach in Barry Odom, who just needs a bit of time to get things into competitive shape. You can excuse his first season in West Lafayette — it was a complete GREASE FIRE that needed to be put out — and now the baby steps forward can begin.
The offense still needs a lot of work and we’re not crazy about the quarterback situation, but the defense might be a little bit better if they can find a pass rush. They miss a few of the giants of the Big Ten on the schedule, so that’ll help, but it still looks like a rebuilding year for Purdue.
