2021 Recap

Record – 5-7

ATS – 5-7

The Spartans were one of the DARLINGS of the 2020 SCAMDEMIC season when they took down the Mountain West title in impressive fashion. Last year was a bit of a disappointment as they lost their final three games and missed out on a bowl game. The most prestigious win? Probably Wyoming.

Let’s check in with the program and see how things look heading into 2022.

San Jose St Spartans 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

San Jose St sputtered on offense and managed a mere 20 PPG (#118 FBS) whilst struggling on the ground (#110 rush offense) and thru the air (#114 pass efficiency). QB Nick Starkel was brutal and Nick Nash wasn’t much better, so Spartans fans have to be thrilled with the addition of veteran QB Chevan Cordeiro from Hawaii. Basically everyone that caught a pass LY is back in the mix excluding star TE Derrick Deese and they add some solid talent from Nevada via the transfer portal. That makes us feel pretty good about the THROW GAME. We’d love to see these guys get SOMETHING going on the ground but not sure who’s gonna provide the production given the departure of Tyler Nevens (766, 7 TD LY). They return just two starters up front and will be without their excellent LT Jack Snyder. We like Cordeiro and the WR group but not sure they’ll be balanced or that consistent. Stay tuned, yo.

DEFENSE

The Spartans weren’t as tough on defense LY as they were in 2021 (26.5 PPG, 19.9 2YA) but were still very stout vs the run (135 YPG, #4 Mountain West). Things look pretty good heading into 2022 as they return the vast majority of their best players and eight of the top-nine tacklers overall. The run D will be solid for the 3rd consecutive season with six starters back in the front seven including tackling machine MLB Kyle Harmon (133, 6 TFL). The fine pass-rushing DE combo of Viliami Fehoko and Cade Hall will get heat on the QB (combined 11 sacks LY). Two starters are back in the secondary and recall that San Jose St booked a mediocre 23-6 TD to INT mark in 2021. This isn’t the San Diego St defense but it’s one of the better stop units in the conference.

SPECIAL TEAMS

RUH ROH. There might be problems with the kicking game as they lose their excellent punter and PK combination from 2021. They could use some SPICE at KR and PR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The non-conference schedule is very reasonable outside of the BODY BAG GAME at Auburn. It’s also nice to see that they miss Boise St from the Mountain division. Note that two of their final three games are nasty road affairs (San Diego St, Utah St).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – October 22 – at New Mexico St

This will be the Spartans third road game in four weeks and it’s a SANDWICH spot between a pair of conference rivals (Fresno St, Nevada). San Jose St could get caught sleepwalking in this one.

Season Win Total

per BetOnline July 14

Over 6.5 +125

Under 6.5 -155

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

That looks about right. The defense will keep them in almost every game so GUN TO THE HEAD play would be a LIGHT DUSTING on the ‘over’.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

HC Brent Brennan has a sparkling 32-24-1 record vs Vegas (57%) and has been a great bet in Mountain West action (24-14-1, 63%).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Spartans SAVED THEIR BACON by snagging former Hawaii QB Chevan Cordeiro via the transfer portal. It doesn’t guarantee anything but it certainly gives them hope of competing for a division title. The defense is gonna be very good and they might be able to sneak up on folks once again this year. Go Spartans!
