“It would kill some men to get so close to their dream and not touch it. God, they’d consider it a tragedy.”
<Ray Kinsella>
<Field of Dreams>
The Longhorns proved to the entire college football world that they belong in the SEC. Texas got thru conference play without much resistance, other than the midseason hiccup vs Georgia, and they set themselves up for a rematch vs those very same Bulldogs. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, Georgia slithered past Texas in the SEC Championship in an OT classic and took home the conference hardware. Texas disposed of Clemson fairly easily in the College Football Playoff but couldn’t get past the eventual champs from Ohio St (L 28-14).
Texas has won 25 games over the last two seasons. Can they finally break thru and win it all in 2025?
Texas Longhorns 2025 Outlook
OFFENSE
It’s finally time to see who many are calling “The greatest QB of all-time historical history of the entire historical universe”. Arch Manning has a LASER ROCKET arm, good mobility, and impeccable pedigree, but he’s still gotta do it on the field. The best news for Arch is that he’ll be supported by one of the best RBs groups in the nation led by 1,000-yard producer Quintrevion Wisner who’s got a small handful of immensely talented youngsters behind him on the depth chart. Replacements will need to step up in the THROW GAME after the departure of star WR Matthew Golden (#1 NFL DC, Packers) and TE Gunnar Helm and we’re confident that things are in good shape with the return of WRs Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore, and the addition of stud TE Jack Andries from Cal (623, 11.1, 2 TD LY). The only thing that has us a bit concerned on this side of the football is an offensive line that lost THREE players to NFL including superstar LT Kelvin Banks. There’s still lots of talent to ogle over but keep in mind that it’ll be very difficult to sustain a long playoff run without solid play up front.
DEFENSE
Texas played phenomenal defense LY (15.3 PPG, #3 FBS; 283 YPG, #3) and they did a great job when it came to PENETRATION (46 sacks, #4). The defense is stacked heading into 2025 as they’ve got stars at every level. The DL has impossible size on the interior with a pair of starters projected at 350+ pounds and they’ve got a few lethal options on the outside in DE/LB Colin Simmons (9 sacks as a freshman LY) and Trey Moore (9.5 TFL, 6 QBH). The back two levels of the stop unit feature impact players such as LB Anthony Hill (113 tackles, 16.5 TFL), safety Michael Taaffe (#2 tackles, 10 PBU, 2 INT), and CB Malik Muhammad. The scariest thing about the Texas defense is their overall depth, and potential of the untested underclassmen. WHOA, NELLIE.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Longhorns should have a rock solid kicking game with the sparkling additions of PK Mason Shipley (15/19 FG, 53/55 XP LY) and punter Jack Bowmeester (Utah) but they’ll need to find new primary return men.
Schedule Analysis
Overall – Texas travels to Ohio St (!) to open the season and that’s what we call a legit test. The SEC schedule is tough as they’ve gotta face Florida and Georgia on the road, and don’t forget the Red River SHOOTOUT **** vs Oklahoma in mid-October. The best feature of the schedule is the three-game stretch of Kentucky (!), Mississippi St (A), and Vanderbilt (H). The most unfortunate element with regards to the schedule is the fact that after they face Sam Houston at home on September 20th, their next home game is, wait for it, on November 1st.
**** Yes, Karen. It’s still called the SHOOTOUT! Pew pew, rat a tat tat, PEW PEW PEW, bang.
Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Florida (Oct 4)
This will be the Longhorns’ first real test since the August opener vs Ohio St and Florida will be looking to exact revenge after last season’s blowout loss in Austin (49-17).
Season Win Total
Market consensus July 17
Over 9.5 -175
Under 9.5 +145
MEGALOCKS says:
Lean: Over
We think they can get a split in the two killer road games (Ohio St, Georgia) and finish the regular season with one or two losses. It probably makes more sense to back them in the futures market, but you do you.
Note – Our official list of season win total investments will be posted in the blog section of the website.
MEGAmazing Tidbits
HC Steve Sarkisian is a robust 17-10 ATS (63%) at home with the Longhorns.
Despite being one of the most successful programs in the history of the sport, the Longhorns have only won three conference titles this century (2005, 2009, 2023; Big 12).
Austin is the capital of the GREAT STATE of TEXAS and it’s well-known for its plethora of HOTTIES and for being ranked #1 on Trip Advisor’s list of America’s Emerging Communist Hotbeds ****.
**** Fact check – You betcha.
MEGALOCKS Forecast:
It doesn’t take a GALAXY BRAIN to figure out that this team is loaded on both sides of the football, and you’ve gotta think that the last two seasons of close calls have toughened them up and made them ready for a final push to a National Championship. The Longhorns are one of the most likely teams to win it all and the good news is that they just need to find a way to make the College Football Playoff and let the talent take over.
HOOK ‘EM!
