ULM Warhawks 2022 College Football Preview

July 18, 2022

2021 Recap

Record – 4-8

ATS – 5-6-1

The Warhawks were surprisingly competitive in year one of the Terry Bowden era and pulled off some yuuuuge upsets along the way. ULM defeated Troy as 23-point underdogs, South Alabama as 13-points dogs, and completely SHOCKED the WORLD when they upended Liberty as 33-point underdogs. Yup, that all happened.

ULM was 0-10 during the 2020 SCAMDEMIC season and improved to 4-8 last year. Can they take another step forward?

ULM Warhawks 2022 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Warhawks struggled to get much of anything done on a consistent basis LY and finished  ranked #7 in the Sun Belt in both rushing offense (130 YPG) and passing offense (192 YPG). QB Chandler Rogers didn’t look out of place LY in limited action (63%, 9-3 TD to INT, 367 rush) and he’s got three of the top WRs coming back this year including #1 BOOGIE Knight (588, 13.1, 3 TD). ULM returns their top-two RBs who combined for over 900Y and 7 TDs LY as well as three starters on the offensive line. We definitely expect more from the offense in 2022.

DEFENSE

ULM made good strides with the run defense LY as they went from allowing 249 YPG to a somewhat-respectable 163 YPG. The pass defense was another story as they were one of the worst teams in the nation in defending the THROW GAME (67%, 30-11 TD to INT). A mere four starters are back on this side of the football but at least they’ll have four of last year’s top-five tacklers on board. The DL has some good size inside but we worry about the pass rush potential at DE. The Warhawks’ best defensive player is probably LB Zack Woodard (#2 tackler, 9 TFL) and he leads an average-looking LB group. The secondary is undergoing a complete rebuild and we expect ULM to be fairly horrible vs the pass once again in 2022.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Everyone returns from a unit that was underwhelming last year but at least they’ve got a good piece in PK Calum Sutherland (16-21 FG, 2-4 50+ LY) to rely upon.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – YIKES. They’ve only got five home games and have a pair of BODY BAG road tests (Texas, ROLL TIDE). They miss Marshall and Appalachian St from the East but have to battle Coastal Carolina.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – October 22 – at Army

This event is SANDWICHED between a pair of Sun Belt games (South Alabama, Texas St) and it’s never easy to face the devastating Army triple option attack.

Season Win Total

per Vegas Insider July 19

Over 2.5 -115

Under 2.5 -115

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

We’re tempted to go with the ‘over’ after seeing them pull a WAD of upsets last season but that schedule looks pretty nasty.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Warhawks have an awful 43-77 (.358) record over the L10Y but they’ve been relatively scrappy at home over that time horizon (26-26, .500).
ULM has only played in one bowl game and that was back in 2012 when they were drilled by Ohio in the Independence Bowl.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

ULM showed a lot of SPUNK last season but ran out of gas in the second half of the campaign. The offense will be improved this year, but WHOA NELLIE, that defense could be a big problem. Crafty head coach Terry Bowden will probably find a way to exceed expectations but we’ll wait until 2023 for a SPICY prediction on these guys.
