Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2021 College Football Preview

Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 19, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 10-2

ATS – 6-6

The Irish FIRED out of the chute and won their first ten games before falling in back-to-back games to the nation’s premier programs, Clemson (L 34-10) and ROLL TIDE (L 31-14). The highlight of the season had to be the mid-season win over those same Clemson Tigers in South Bend (W 47-40, 2OT). HATERZZ should note that they booked their fourth consecutive double-digit win season.

Let’s check in and see how things are shaping up for 2021.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Irish brought a balanced offense to the table LY (#24 FBS rushing, #43 passing efficiency) and will have to move on from their excellent QB Ian Book who is off to the NFL (Saints). They’ll miss the crafty running ability of Book but get a quality transfer from Wisconsin in Jack Coan who was really good in 2019 (18-5 TD to INT, 70%). The ground game is in phenomenal shape with the return of 1,000-yard rusher Kyren Williams (14 TD) and #2 RB Chris Tyree (525, 6.8, 4 TD). They’ll need to replace some key pieces at WR but boast one of the best TEs in college football in Michael Mayer (42-450, 10.7, 2 TD). They lost a ton of talent up front including THREE guys that were taken in the NFL draft, so despite the solid play over the last number of years, there’s no doubt they’ll be down a notch.

DEFENSE

Notre Dame played strong D once again and allowed fewer than 20 PPG for the third consecutive season (19.7, #14 FBS) despite playing ROLL TIDE, North Carolina, and Clemson X 2. They lose three of the top-five tacklers and quite a bit of star power from LY’s stop unit. There’s a ton of raw talent up front but they lose a pair of starters to the NFL who combined for 10 sacks LY. Losing Butkus Award winning LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah to the NFL stings as well, but there are still talented peeps on board including LB Drew White (#3 tackler, 9 TFL LY). They lose a pair of talented starters in the secondary but safety Kyle Hamilton is rock solid and recall that he led the team in tackles in 2020. They lose ace DC Clark Lea to Wake Forest but get a fine replacement in Marcus Freeman who comes over from Cincinnati.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Jonathan Doerer comes back after an inconsistent campaign (15/23, 4-9 40+) but P Jay Bramblett was very effective LY (42.8, 41.3 net).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – YIKES. It’s almost always tough, but this docket is pretty nasty. They don’t face Clemson like LY but the docket is DEEP with good teams.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Navy (November 6th)

It could be a sleepy spot after facing USC and North Carolina and note that this is a yuuuuge game for Navy.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 19

Over 9 +125

Under 9 -145

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

They lost a lot of talent to the NFL and it seems more likely that they win eight games as opposed to ten.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

QB Ian Book left the program as their all-time leader in wins with 30.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Irish have been remarkably consistent over the last ten years and won eight or more games on every occasions but one (2016). There’s still a lot of talent on this roster and they get a nice replacement for Book but the schedule is going to be a grind. We’ll call for eight or nine wins and a decent bowl bid.

BYU Cougars 2021 College Football Preview

BYU Cougars 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 20, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 11-1

ATS – 9-3

The Cougars rode the arm of superstar QB Zach Wilson to an 11-1 record that included a blowout win over UCF in the Boca Raton Bowl (W 49-23). The also blew Boise St to SMITHEREENS on the blue turf (W 51-17). In fact, they came within a yard or so of an undefeated season thanks to a painfully close loss to Coastal Carolina. That was BYU’s first double-digit winning season since they went 10-3 in 2011.

BYU Cougars 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

QB Zach Wilson was phenomenal LY (73.5%, 33-3 TD to INT, 10 rush TD) and will obviously be impossible to replace. The good news is that they have a few guys with experience (Baylor Romney, Jaren Hall) as well as a highly-touted freshman in Jacob Conover. Fall camp should be interesting! The rushing attack will be DEVASTATING with the return of star RB Tyler Allgeier who gained well over 1,100 yards on the ground at 7.5 YPC (13 TD). #2 RB Lopini Katoa is also back (444, 5.5, 5 TD). #1 WR Dax Milne will be missed (1,188 ! LY; NFL) but everyone else of consequence is back in the mix. WR Gunner Romney averaged close to 20 YPC and TE Isaac Tex booked 12 TDs LY. The OL was great in 2020 and allowed just 12 sacks whilst paving the way for 5.4 YPC. They lose a couple important pieces up front this year but appear to have decent depth. Note that they lost their OC and OL coach to Baylor.

DEFENSE

The Cougars were fantastic on defense LY and finished the year ranked #11 in the FBS in total defense (318 YPG) whilst allowing a mere 15.3 PPG (#4 FBS). They’ll need to do some reloading as seven of the top-10 tacklers are gone including #1 tackler LB Isaiah Kaufusi. Thankfully, the LB group is the deepest defensive unit and they bring back some talented guys including Payton Wilgar (#3 tackles, 5 TFL, 5 QBH). There’s a lot of turnover on the DL and in the secondary and they’ll particularly miss large NT Khyiris Tonga who’s off to the NFL. The back end of the defense needs to work in three new starters.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Jake Oldroyd was a weapon LY connecting on 13/13 FG (3-3 50+). The other half of the kicking game is also solid as P Ryan Rehkow returns off an excellent 2020 campaign (45.1, 41.9 net). The primary KR and PR both return for duty.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The Cougars start with three of their first four games vs the PAC 12 and three of those games are at home. The opener with Arizona is on a neutral site. They’re aren’t too many FREE SQUARES on the schedule and they finish with back-to-back road games (Georgia Southern, USC).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Boise St (October 9th)

Revenge is a dish BEST SERVED COLD. The Broncos will be anxious to avenge the SPANKING they took at home vs BYU in 2020.

Season Win Total

Over 6.5 -110

Under 6.5 -110

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

GUN TO THE HEAD would have to say ‘over’ but they’ll deal with a much tougher schedule than LY and must replace some serious talent. We’ll almost certainly take a pass on this market.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

September 11th ushers in another version of the HOLY WAR as Utah visits Provo. The Utes hold a 62-34-4 series lead and have won an impressive NINE straight times. Seven of those wins were by 8 points or less.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

It’ll be interesting to see how far the Cougars fall this season. They still boast a solid roster but lose an impossibly good QB and a number of key pieces on defense. The schedule is nasty and will be a much tougher road to handle that what they dealt with in 2020. We expect them to finish a game or so above .500.

Army West Point Black Knights 2021 College Football Preview

Army West Point Black Knights 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 18, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 9-3

ATS – 7-5

They’re baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.

The Black Knights collected nine wins and a COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF’S Trophy and rebounded nicely off a disappointing 2019 season (5-8). They outscored their rivals from Navy and Air Force by a combined score of 25-7 at the end of the regular season and then went head to head with West Virginia in the Liberty Bowl only to lose by three points (L 24-21).

Army West Point Black Knights 2020 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Black Knights BLUDGEONED their opponents with the ground game as per usual to the tune of 273 YPG (#4 FBS). They didn’t get to the ‘300’ mark like from 2016-2018 but they were efficient on 3rd and 4th downs and owned the time of possession (34 min, #6 FBS). Army was forced to use a lot of QBs LY due to injuries and might have the best depth we’ve seen from a service academy at this position. We’ll give Tyhier Tyler the nod (led team, 578 rush LY) but recall that Jabari Laws averaged over 6 YPC in 2019 whilst completing 16/20 pass attempts. Lots of experience returns at RB including Jakobi Buchanan (6 TD) and the electric Tyrell Robinson who averaged 7 YPC and also led the team in receiving yards (19.5, 2 TD). And don’t sleep on a sneaky group of TEs in the rarely-used THROW GAME. Only one starter returns up front but they always find a way to cobble together a strong unit. This offense looks really good heading into 2021.

DEFENSE

The Black Knights finished NUMBER ONE (!) in the FBS in total defense and allowed a paltry 275 YPG. They only allowed 14.8 PPG which placed them 2nd in the FBS in scoring defense. Six of the top seven tacklers are back this year but they’ll miss #1 tackler and ace LB Jon Rhattigan. They look rock solid up front with the return of their excellent NG Nolan Cockrill and the secondary returns a ton of experience after finishing #25 in the FBS in pass efficiency D in 2020. They picked off 14 passes LY and finished T9 in the country in INTs. Safety Cedric Cunningham is a BEAST.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Quinn Maretzki made 4/6 FGA LY and 15/15 XP. P Zach Harding was excellent in 2020 (43.3, 39.1 net). KR/PR Tyrell Robinson is always a threat.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – There’s only one “unwinnable” game (at Wisconsin), if there’s such a thing when talking about Army. There are some sneaky tough games ON THE HIGHWAY (Georgia St, Ball St, Liberty) in addition to the visit to Madison.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Liberty (November 27th)

This game pops up before the big game with Navy (two weeks later) and note that Liberty can really SCORE THE FOOTBALL.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 18

Over 8 +125

Under 8 -145

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage. We have them pegged at eight wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Army has won the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy in three of the last four seasons. Navy bagged it in 2019.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Black Knights look to be a HOT HANDFUL once again. They look really good on both sides of the football and have excellent depth at QB. The road docket is challenging but this appears to be a better team on paper than last year’s squad. We give them a shot at matching or eclipsing their 2020 win total and make them the favorite to take down another Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy.

Liberty Flames 2021 College Football Preview

Liberty Flames 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 19, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 10-1

ATS – 9-2

Yes, guy.

That was one heck of a season as the Flames rattled off 10 (!) wins including a victory over previously undefeated Coastal Carolina in the Cure Bowl (W 37-34 OT). They also took down the Hokies on the road and came within one point (!) of an undefeated campaign. HC Hugh Freeze has booked an outstanding 18-6 record in Lynchburg and it’ll be interesting to see what they do for an encore in 2021. Let’s go!

Liberty Flames 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Flames were fantastic on offense LY thanks in large part to the play of superstar QB Malik Willis (64%, 20-6 TD to INT; 944 rush, 14 TD). They were the #9 rushing offense in the FBS and ranked #22 in passing efficiency. Willis is back for one more season before his NFL career kicks off and leads a potent offense. Almost everyone that caught a pass returns this year including #1 WR DJ Stubbs (38-523, 13.8, 3 TD) and #2 WR Kevin Shaa (18.0 YPC, 4 TD). TE Johnny Huntley averaged an impressive 13.4 YPC LY (3 TD). Two of the Flames’ top-three RBs are back including Joshua Mack (797, 5.7, 4 TD). They also add Utah transfer RB TJ Green to the group. THE HITS KEEP COMING when you consider that everyone’s back up front and they did a great job in 2020.

DEFENSE

Liberty made fine strides on defense LY and allowed just 20.5 PPG after yielding 28.1 in 2019. They also allowed just 318 YPG (#11 FBS) which was close to a 100-YPG improvement from the previous year. They were equally stingy vs the run (#29) and vs the pass (#26 pass efficiency D). They return 9 starters this year and look like a really strong unit. It all starts up front with a wicked DL that has size inside and a pair of nasty DEs (Treshaun Clark, Durrell Johnson) who combined for 14 sacks and 12 QBH LY. They return #1 tackler and rover Javon Scruggs and add a talented LB from ULM through the transfer portal (Rashaad Harding; #4 tackler in 2019). The back end is experienced and they add a small handful of talented transfers to the mix.

SPECIAL TEAMS

All the key components return this year and they’ll hope for a bit more consistency from PK Alex Barbir (13-20 FG, 4-8 40+). PR Demario Douglas booked a TD LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It doesn’t look too bad. The three-game November schedule is tough and note that Hugh Freeze returns to Ole Miss on November 6th.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at UAB (October 2nd)

This will be their 3rd road game in four weeks and the Blazers are mighty tough.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 19

Over 9 -105

Under 9 -115

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

We have them pegged at 8-10 wins. If you can find a rogue 8.5 out there it’s probably worth a stab at the ‘over’.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Flames haven’t had a losing season since 2005. That’s a FACT CHECK TRUE.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

WHOA NELLIE. Hugh Freeze has built a LYNCHBURG MONSTER and just might have his best team on paper heading into 2021. The offense will be lethal and the defense has talent and the proven ability to get after the quarterback. Another double-digit win season is very possible.

Massachusetts Minutemen 2021 College Football Preview

Massachusetts Minutemen 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 18, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 0-4

ATS – 2-2

The 2020 campaign put the “M” in MASSACRE for the Minutemen as they lost all four games in blowout fashion getting outscored 161-12 in the process. Massachusetts is 1-15 over the past two years and it’ll be interesting to see if they can improve at all in 2021. Let’s check in with the team.

Massachusetts Minutemen 2020 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Minutemen averaged an impossible 3.0 (!) PPG LY and scored one TD all season, a crafty 2-yard TD pass from the incomparable Will Koch to Samuel Emilus. The QB room gets a nice upgrade with the transfer of Tyler Lytle from Colorado (6’5 220) and he’s the likely favorite in the clubhouse for the starting gig. They get another P5 upgrade at RB where Kay’ron Davis (Rutgers) will join last season’s #1 rusher Ellis Merriweather. It’s unclear what kind of talent they have at WR and they lose the aforementioned Emilus (#1). They have a decent pair of JOHNSONS at TE (Josiah, Jermaine). Three starters return to an OL that needs some work but they add a few interesting transfers to the group. This looks like one of the weakest offenses in college football.

DEFENSE

Massachusetts has allowed 40.3, 52.7 (!), and 42.9 PPG over the past three seasons and have lots of work to do on this side of the football. We’re not sure how much better things can get with the departure of their top-two tacklers (both LBs: McCubrey, Ruane). The DL has surprisingly good size and just might be the best unit on the defense. The secondary returns all four starters and add in a pair (!) of P5 transfers, but note that the Minutemen didn’t pick off a single pass in 2020 despite having a decent pass rush (9 sacks in 4g). We don’t expect much but they just might not be completely horrible.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Punter George “Georgie” Georgopoulos is coming off a fine season (41.9, 38.4 net) and Cameron Carson will handle the PK duties (KO LY). It’s unclear what kind of talent they have at PR and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s seems completely impossible BUT hear us out, yo. There’s hope for a win or two. Connecticut. Rhode Island. Maine. New Mexico St. Gotta be a win in there. AMIRITE?

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing overly-spooky is noted.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 18

Over 1.5 -170

Under 1.5 +150

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage. It’s a tough call. The roster is an ABOMINATION but they have four winnable games as noted above. Feels like a coin toss that they bag a pair.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

Massachusetts’ primary rival has to be considered the Connecticut Huskies. They first played in 1897 (!) and the Minutemen lead the series 37-35-2. They’re scheduled to meet on October 9th this year.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

It’s almost certainly going to be another long season in Amherst but they’ve added some talent via the transfer portal and maybe they get a nice surprise at QB? In any event, expect a lot of blowout losses, but there’s no doubt they’re capable of squeaking out a win or two along the way. Here’s hoping.

Connecticut Huskies 2021 College Football Preview

Connecticut Huskies 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 18, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – Did not play

ATS – Did not play

The last time we saw these guys in action was back in 2019 when we witnessed another EXERCISE in FUTILITY. They finished 2-10 that season and were outscored by an average of 41-19. Those two victories? Wagner and Massachusetts.

Let’s check in with these guys and see what’s on the horizon in 2021.

Connecticut Huskies 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

There’s definitely reason for optimism as the Huskies return a promising set of TRIPLETS to build around. QB Jack Zergiotis had his moments in 2019 and had four 250+ yard passing games. That included a 418 (!) yard performance vs East Carolina. He’ll need to cut down on the INTs if the offense wants to function efficiently (9-11 TD to INT). RB Kevin Mensah is a LEGIT #1 RB and recall that he rushed for over 1,000 yards and 8 TDs in 2019 (five 100-yard games), and also turned that trick back in 2018. They’ll miss #2 rusher RB Art Thompkins who also bagged 39 receptions 2YA (#2 team). #1 WR Cameron Ross was great last time we saw him (60-723, 12.1, 4 TD) and will give Zergiotis a legit target. We’re not sure about depth at the skill positions but TE Jay Rose is a reliable weapon (27-261, 2 TD) and RB Robert Burns comes over from YOUR Miami Hurricanes. The OL is a mystery at this point as they’ve lost a number of guys due to graduation and transfer since we last saw them play.

DEFENSE

The 2018 Huskies’ defense was one of the worst in college football history. The 2019 version was really bad, but not “historically bad”. They allowed 40.5 PPG (#128 FBS) and were poor vs the run and the pass. Connecticut’s opponents scored 40+ on six occasions. Only one FBS team failed to hit the 30 mark (Houston, 24). Seven starters return from the 2019 unit but they’ll be without their best player on this side of the football and leading tackler DB Tyler Coyle. The LB unit appears to be the strength of the defense as they are experienced and pretty deep at the position. Omar Fortt and Jackson Mitchell were #2 and #3 respectively in tackles 2YA. The DL could be better than expected as they return their top-three sack men in Kevon Jones, Travis Jones, and Lwal Uguak who combined for 10.5 of those BAD BOYS in 2019. They’ll endeavor to make improvement on the back end as they’ve allowed 63.8%+ completions in each of the last four seasons and only picked off 9 passes in the full 2019 campaign.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Clayton Harris was 10/16 on FG attempts in 2019 (0/3 from 50+) and they’ll need to break in a new punter. Primary KR Art Thompkins is also gone.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s an interesting mix of winnable games (Holy Cross, UMass, Yale) and likely CARNAGE (at UCF, at Clemson, Houston). There’s a long break from when they play MTSU (October 22) and at Clemson (November 13).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Massachusetts (October 9th)

This will be their 3rd road game in four weeks and they’ll be coming off physical games with Wyoming and Vanderbilt.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 18

Over 2.5 +110

Under 2.5 -130

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

That looks about right. They’ll probably have to sweep the games with Holy Cross and Yale and that isn’t a LOCK.

MEGAmazing Tidbits’

Connecticut’s football program is once again an INDEPENDENT after competing for 16 years in the AAC and Big East. Their high water mark was the 8-5 season in 2010 in which they made the FIESTA BOWL. The Sooners prevailed by a score of 48-20.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Huskies have only managed to bag six wins over the last three seasons. Half of those victories came against FCS foes. The hope is that they’ll be more competitive after leaving the AAC. It’ll be interesting to see how they fare after missing an entire season of football. We expect them to win two or three games.

New Mexico St Aggies 2021 College Football Preview

College Football Predictions – New Mexico St Aggies 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 19, 2021

2021 SPRING Recap

Record – 1-1

ATS – 1-1

The Aggies played a pair of spring games vs FCS foes and got through them with a win and a loss. They got blown out by something called a Tarleton St (L 43-17) and took care of the always dangerous Dixie St Trailblazers (W 36-29). That spring activity may have positive benefits this year. Let’s check in with the team.

New Mexico St Aggies 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Aggies rolled with Josh Adkins in 2019 (63%, 14-15 TD to INT) and moved on in the spring to Jonah Johnson who showed dual-threat potential in two games. He completed 60% of his passes (1-3 TD to INT) and ran for a pair of TDs. They return their top-two rushers from the spring including Juwaun Price (196, TD, 5.9) and recall that they have a transfer from Michigan (!) in O’Maury Samuels who could take the #1 spot. It’s unclear what they have at WR and TE but six players caught at least five passes during the two spring contests. They return 60+ starts up front and boast Ole Miss transfer Eli Johnson at center. LT Sage Doxtater was taken in the 2nd round of the CFL draft by YOUR Toronto Argonauts. There’s potential for this offense to exceed most people’s expectations.

DEFENSE

New Mexico St allowed 40+ PPG in each of their last two full seasons and need to make yuuuge strides on this sides of the football. The run D was particularly atrocious in 2019 (259 YPG, 2nd worst FBS). They return most men up front from the spring games but it’s probably still going to be a weak DL. The LB and DB units are also a mystery in terms of overall talent and a pair of their best players have transferred out (LB Devin Richardson – #3 tackles 2019; DB – Jason Simmons – #6). The secondary doesn’t have a ton of experience but these guys haven’t allowed more than 61% completions since 2016.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Ethan Albertson was 4/4 on FGA during the spring and P Josh Carlson had a fine 43.7 net. Juwaun Price booked a KR TD in the two-game ‘season’.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s pretty tough. They have seven road games, two vs SEC foes (ROLL TIDE, Kentucky), and have a long stretch between games in Las Cruces (September 25 – Hawaii, November 6 – Utah St). Speaking of Hawaii, they have some sweet HOME AND HOME action with the Rainbow Warriors.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at San Diego St (September 4th)

The Aztecs are nasty and the yuuuuge rivalry game with New Mexico is on deck.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 19

Over 2 +100

Under 2 -120

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

It’s hard to know what to expect from these guys but there are definitely a few winnable games on the docket.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Aggies are just a few years removed from their exciting Arizona Bowl win over Utah St (W 26-20 in OT). That was their first bowl appearance since the 1960 Sun Bowl.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Doug Martin has one of the more difficult jobs in college football as it’s not easy to recruit to Las Cruces, particularly when you have no conference affiliation. The offense has the potential to be decent but it’s really hard to know what to expect from the defense. How bad will they be? Keep your eyes peeled early on as they guys may provide value ATS as yuuuuge underdogs. #AggieUp !
