USC Trojans 2021 College Football Preview

USC Trojans 2021 College Football Preview

2020 Recap

Record – 5-1

ATS – 3-3

The Trojans pulled out a couple of SQUEAKERS to start the season when they took down two teams from the GREAT STATE OF ARIZONA by a combined 5 points. They finished the “regular season” at 5-0 and defeated Utah and UCLA on their way to the conference title game. The Ducks SHOCKED THE WORLD with a 31-24 victory and USC has to have a bitter taste in their collective mouths heading into 2021.

USC Trojans 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

QB Kedon Slovis can be frustrating to watch at times but he’s thrown 47 TD passes in essentially a season and a half. Slovis loses a pair of key weapons at WR in Amon-Ra St Brown and Tyler Vaughns but Drake London is on the verge of stardom (33-502, 15.2, 3 TD LY) and WR Bru McCoy has lots of upside. They also add a of intriguing transfers at WR and TE. USC is a pass-first offense but they’d like to get more out of the rushing attack. #1 RB Vavae Malepeai returns and they get a yuuuuge addition from Texas in RB Keontay Ingram who got a lot of action for the Longhorns. Four starters return up front but recall that they allowed 15 sacks in the truncated plandemic season (#10 PAC 12 sacks allowed per game), and they lose their excellent LT Alijah Vera-Tucker who was taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft (J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS).

DEFENSE

USC has been average on defense for a number of years and they’ll need to make some improvements on this side of the football if they wanna get back to national prominence. They’re solid up front with decent size and the ability get after the QB. DE Nick Figueroa led the team in sacks and TFL LY and note they add SUPER SPECIMEN Korey Foreman (DE) into the mix. LB/DE Drake Jackson is a sure-fire top-10 2022 NFL draft pick. LBs Kana’i Mauga and Ralen Goforth were both in the top-four in tackles LY and CB Chris Steele is a good piece to build around in the secondary. If there’s a soft spot on D it’s probably the back end given the departure of star safety and PAC 12 DPOY Talanoa Hufanga (NFL).

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Trojans improved their special teams play LY under new STC Sean Snyder and return their fine P/PK combo of Parker Lewis and Ben Griffiths. KR Gary Bryant averaged 26 YPR LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – Things work out really well as they miss both Oregon and Washington from the North. They’re likely to be sitting at 4-0 in conference play (5-0 overall) when they battle Utah on October 9th. GET CHO POPCONE!

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – San Jose St (September 4th)

PAC 12 play is on deck (Stanford) and the Trojans are just 11-23 ATS L10Y in non-conference play. Not an ideal spot to gargle on some giant home chalk.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes July 24

Over 8.5 +105

Under 8.5 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

They are legit and the schedule helps quite a bit.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

HC Clay Helton has an impressive 26-5 SU record at home.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Things set up really well for the Trojans. The offense will SCORE the FOOTBALL and the defense is one of the best in the PAC 12 on paper. The icing on the cake appears to be the CHARMIN SOFT schedule that has them avoiding the big boys from the PAC 12 North. We’ll call for a return to the PAC 12 Championship Game. Fight On!

Utah Utes 2021 College Football Preview

Utah Utes 2021 College Football Preview

2020 Recap

Record – 3-2

ATS – 3-2

The Utes opened with a nasty duo (Trojans, Huskies) and lost both of those games. The tough one to swallow was the game at Washington in which they jumped out to a 21-ZIP halftime lead and proceeded to slowly and methodically CHOKE the game away into the loss column. They showed some fight and rattled off three consecutive wins to end the season. They came from 21 down in the finale vs Washington St (W 45-28) and head into 2021 with some theoretical momentum.

Utah Utes 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Utes had a balanced attack once again LY (194 YPG rush, 216 YPG pass) and finished #7 in the PAC 12 in total offense. There’s a NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN under center as former Baylor Bear Charlie Brewer takes over the starting gig. Brewer threw for 9,700 (!) yards with the Bears from 2017-2020. WR Bryan Thompson is gone but #1 WR Britain Covey is back and TE Brant Keithe is a legit threat in the THROW GAME (25-236, 9.4). It’s not an elite set of weapons but it’s good enough for what Utah wants to do. It’s a complete reload at RB due to the tragic death of RB Ty Jordan but they add a pair of P5 transfers in TJ Pledger (Oklahoma) and Chris Curry (LSU). The OL returns almost 100 career starts and should be one of the best in the conference (5.1 YPC LY, #3 PAC 12 sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

The defense took a small step backwards LY but it was a WACKY season to be sure, and we expect the Utes to be back to their normal nasty selves in 2021. The front four looks great and has a lot of size and talent. DE Mika Tafua booked 3 sacks in 4G LY. DT Viane Moala is a load inside. The LB duo of Nephi Sewell and Devin Lloyd (top-two tacklers LY) might be the best in the conference and note that Lloyd has accumulated 139 tackles and 8.5 sacks over the past year and a half. The secondary looks solid and will be sure to take advantage of the pass rush up front. This looks like the best stop unit in the PAC 12.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Utes have a good history on special teams but have been subpar (by their standards) the past two years. Things look REALLY good this season as they return star PK Jadon Redding (8/8 FG LY, 73/73 career PAT) as well as ACE return man Britain Covey who excels on PR AND KR. Loaded, yo.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They have a pair of tough, but winnable non-conference tilts before PAC 12 action begins (at BYU, at San Diego St). Washington St is first up in conference play before they have the yuuuuge road date at USC. They miss Washington from the North and get Oregon at home. Their final two games are in SACK LAKE CITY.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at San Diego St (September 18th)

This comes after the HOLY WAR match-up with BYU and before PAC 12 play. This should be a MEAT GRINDER of a game.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 24

Over 8.5 -115

Under 8.5 -105

update August 21

Over 8.5 -145

Under 8.5 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

They have a good shot to start the season at 4-0 and are one of the most talented teams in the PAC 12. The schedule is doable.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Utes haven’t beaten the Trojans in the state of California since 1916 (W 27-12).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Utes did a great job nailing down offensive talent via the transfer portal, particularly at QB where they get a really good one in Charlie Brewer. You know the defense is gonna be great and their special teams look “special” again. Their PAC 12 hopes will be determined in a two-game stretch when they face the Trojans and Sun Devils in back-to-back weeks. Legit threat for all the conference marbles.

Arizona St Sun Devils 2021 College Football Preview

Arizona St Sun Devils 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 24, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 2-2

ATS – 3-1

The Sun Devils snatched DEFEAT out of the jaws of VICTORY in game #1 when they blew a 13-point late 4Q lead at USC (L28-27). They dropped their next one to UCLA but finished strong scoring an impossible 116 (!) points in their final two games vs Arizona and Oregon St. They’re now 4-6 in their last 10 games after a hot start in 2019.

Arizona St Sun Devils 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Sun Devils CRUSHED and KILLED on the ground in the four-game plandemic season averaging 264 YPG (#7 FBS). Everyone is back in 2021 including #1 RB Rachaad White who averaged an eye-popping 10.0 YPC (!) and RB Chip Trayanum is an absolute beast. QB Jayden Daniels rushed for 223Y and 4 TDs in 4G and threw 5 TD passes in his spare time (58%, 1 INT). Essentially everyone that caught a pass in 2020 returns for duty and note that the Sun Devils were #12 in the FBS LY in yards per attempt (8.9). Rachaad White led the team in receiving yards LY, Geordon Porter averaged 24 YPC, and they add Bryan Thompson from Utah (20.8 YPC in 2020, 25.6 YPC in 2019). They also added a pair of P5 transfers at TE. The offensive line should be one of the best in the PAC 12 and they’re led by 1st Team PAC 12 honoree Dohnovan West (G LY, C TY).

DEFENSE

The Sun Devils didn’t give up too many points LY (23.3, #32 FBS) but gave up a good chunk of yards, particularly on the ground (183 YPG, #86 FBS). Almost the entire defensive rosters returns and they look particularly strong up front. DE Tyler Johnson had 5 sacks in 4G (!) LY and they are chock-full of talent and size. Adding a transfer from LSU won’t hurt. They have impressive size at LB with the return of Merlin Robertson and Darien Butler, and the secondary returns leading tackler safety Evan Fields and outstanding CB Chase Lucas. If they can improve a bit on 3rd downs (#97 FBS) they have a shot to be really good.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The star of the unit is clearly KR DJ Taylor who averaged 35 yards a pop (TD). P Michael Turk was a 1st Team PAC 12 selection (39.5 net). They’ll need to find a new PK.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They get a couple of FREE SQUARES (Southern Utah, UNLV) before taking to the road to face BYU. Then it’s PAC 12 time, buh buh. They miss Oregon from the North and get USC at home. Utah needs to be faced in Salt Lake City.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Oregon St (November 20th)

They could be in letdown mode after facing USC and Washington in back-to-back weeks and note that the rivalry game with Arizona is on deck.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 24

Over 9 +105

Under 9 -125

update August 21

Over 8.5 -135

Under 8.5 +115

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

We like this team a lot but that’s a pretty lofty number. It’s not easy to win 10 regular season games and the only layup in the division is Arizona. <update – still recommend the under at ‘9’ if you can find one> <8.5 is a pass>.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Arizona St’s last OUTRIGHT Pac 12 title came back in 1996 when the went 8-0 in conference play and finished 11-1 under HC Bruce Snyder. That team ended Nebraska’s 26-game (!) winning streak. The final score was 19-CACK. The QB of that squad? Your pal, Jake Plummer.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The HERMINATOR has put together a SOLID program in his short time in Tempe and this just might be his best team yet. The PAC 12 South is loaded but at least they get USC at home. Washington and Utah will be tough road tests. We like USC to win the division but Arizona St is right there in the mix as they don’t have a significant weakness. Forks Up, yo!

UCLA Bruins 2021 College Football Preview

UCLA Bruins 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 26, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 3-4

ATS – 4-3

The Bruins treated their fans to some exciting games during the truncated plandemic season and finished with a mark of 3-4. Those four losses came against a respectable group of foes (Buffs, Ducks, USC, Stanford) and note that they lost to USC and Oregon by a combined 8 points. Things just might be coming together for Chip Kelly and the Bruins. Let’s check in with this year’s squad.

UCLA Bruins 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

UCLA was solid and balanced on offense LY. They ranked #12 in the FBS in rushing offense (231 YPG) and #20 in passing efficiency. QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson really looked good LY and put together a fine stat line (65%, 12-4 TD to INT, 306 rush, 3 TD) in 4.5 games. Backup Chase Griffin looked fine in limited action. The top-two targets are back to support the THROW GAME and TE Greg Dulcich is one of the best receiving TEs in the country (517, 19.9, 5 TD). #1 WR Kyle Philips was the team leader in receptions by a wide margin (38). The Bruins lose #1 RB Demetric Felton (668 rush, 22 receptions) but retain #2 Brittain Brown (6.6 YPC) and add transfer Zach Charbonnet from Michigan who’s a talented underachiever that could blossom in LA. Everyone returns up front and they should be really good once again.

DEFENSE

The Bruins made improvements on defense a season ago but still posted fairly average numbers in most statistical categories (#69 FBS total D, #30 run, #53 pass efficiency D). They led the PAC 12 in sacks/game and were #4 in yards-per-play. Giving up 38+ on four occasions wasn’t ideal. 10 starters return (14T15 tacklers) with the only glaring omission being DL Osa Odighizuwa who was 2nd on the team in sacks LY (NFL). They don’t have a ton of size up front but NG Otito Ogbonnia is a keeper (6-4, 318). LB and leading tackler Caleb Johnson is probably the team’s best defensive player (7 TFL LY) and headlines a good LB unit. Everyone is back on the back and note that they picked off 9 passes in 7G LY (T1 PAC 12). We’ll call for another small step forward and they could allow fewer than 30 PPG for the first time since 2016.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The kicking game looks fine with the return of PK Nicholas Barr-Mira (6/7 FG LY) and P Luke Akers (39.0 net). They didn’t get much production at KR or PR in 2020.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They should be able to beat a pair of Mountain West foes in non-conference play (Hawaii, Fresno St) but have a DOOZY when LSU comes to town on September 4th. Three of their first four PAC 12 games are on the road and they draw Oregon and Washington from the North.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Utah (October 30th)

This will be their 4th road game in six weeks and Utah might be the toughest road venue in the PAC 12.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 26

Over 7 +105

Under 7 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

We like this squad quite a bit on paper but they have some nasty road tests (Washington, Utah, USC, Stanford) and have to face LSU.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Bruins have only beaten Stanford once in the last 13 tries. Last season’s 48-47 loss in 2OT was a kick in the JACOBS.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

UCLA showed quite a bit of promise a season ago and have Chip Kelly’s best overall roster in 2021. The Pac 12 South is nasty and the schedule doesn’t help. They have one of the best QBs in the conference and if the defense can exceed expectations they just might be a SURPRISE PACKAGE in a competitive PAC 12.

Colorado Buffaloes 2021 College Football Preview

Colorado Buffaloes 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 24, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-2

ATS – 4-2

The BUFFS stormed out of the gate like their mascot RALPHIE and built a record of 4-0 before falling to the Utes at home. They actually had a double-digit lead in that game but let it slip away. USC got the bid to the title game and Colorado played their final game in the Alamo Bowl where they got smoked by Texas (L 55-23). They looked pretty good last year. Let’s see how things are shaping up for 2021.

Colorado Buffaloes 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Buffaloes built their record around fairly sketchy QB play (#106 FBS pass efficiency) and they’ll have a new starting QB under center this season. The battle for the starting role is between Tennessee transfer JT Shrout and LY’s backup Brendon Lewis. Either way, they won’t have much experience at the position. Always everyone that caught a pass LY is back for action and #1 WR Dimitri Stanley averaged almost 17 YPC. The STRAW THAT STIRS THE DRINK is star RB Jarek Broussard who put up phenomenal numbers in the shortened plandemic season (895, 5.7, 5 TD). He SCORCHED Arizona for 301 (!) yards. And don’t forget that “backup” Alex Fontenot led the team in rushing in 2019 (874, 5 TD). Four starters return up front and they hope to replace their excellent LT William Sherman with Ohio St transfer Max Wray. <update: August camp. QB JT Shrout suffered a significant knee injury in practice>

DEFENSE

Colorado was pretty strong vs the pass LY (#33 FBS pass efficiency D, 56%) and had a good pash rush (#2 PAC 12 sacks per game). They got loads of PENETRATION (#1 PAC 12 TFL/game) and excelled on 3rd downs (#1 PAC 12). The run D was a major issue as they allowed an untenable 181 YPG. They allowed 268,192,303 on the ground in their final three games. Eight starters return including a pair of stars. LB Nate Landman led the team in tackles LY and is the heart and soul of the defense (1st team PAC 12), and LB Carson Wells had 6.5 sacks and 16 (!) TFL in 2020. They add LB/S Robert Barnes from the Sooners and have a talented secondary. They’ll miss DL Mustafa Johnson up front. It’s hard to imagine the run D not improving given the talent they have at LB but we shall see.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Everyone returns this season and the overall talent looks decent. PK Evan Price connected on 6/8 FG LY and they have talent at PR and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s much more difficult this year. Texas A&M and Minnesota are tough non-conference opponents and they they draw Oregon and Washington from the North. Four of their final six games are away from Boulder.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Minnesota (September 18th)

This game is sandwiched between the meeting with Texas A&M that will get some national attention, and the PAC 12 opener at Arizona St.

Season Win Total

5Dimes July 24

Over 4.5 -110

Under 4.5 -110

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

There’s some talent on the roster but the schedule is tough and there’s a big Q mark at QB.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Buffaloes have a very impressive all-time record of 714-517-36 (.578). Sadly, they’re just 12-18 in bowl games and haven’t won one since the 2004 Houston Bowl when they took down UTEP (W 33-28).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Colorado had a pretty good season last year but there’s still some work to be done before we call them a legit contender in the tough PAC 12 South. They’ll be able to do good work on the ground but will likely struggle at times in the THROW GAME. The defense features an excellent LB group but could still use more overall talent. A .500 season with that schedule would have to be considered a major success. Go Buffs!

Arizona Wildcats 2021 College Football Preview

Arizona Wildcats 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 24, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 0-5

ATS – 1-4

Yikes.

The Wildcats looked pretty good in their opener as they went head to head with USC and lost a 34-30 heart-breaker. Things took a nasty turn to TURD TOWN after that and they lost their final four games to finish at 0-5. The CHERRY ON TOP was a 70-7 (!) blowout at the hands of the hated Arizona St Sun Devils. Thankfully, Kevin Sumlin is gone and it’ll be up to Jedd Fisch to turn things around.

Arizona Wildcats 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

That was the worst offensive performance we’ve seen in a long time from the Wildcats. They finished the 2020 campaign ranked #86 in total offense (369 YPG) and #118 in scoring offense (17.4 PPG). The starting QB battle will be between LY’s backup Will Plummer (0-3 TD to INT, 54%) and mobile South Florida transfer Jordan McCloud who has a bunch of starts under his belt. Washington St transfer Gunner Cruz is also in the mix. Keep an eye on things during fall camp. The top-six pass catchers are back from LY’s squad but they’ll need to find a way to stretch the field. They averaged a PAC 12 worst 5.6 YPA in 2020. The RB group is a bit of a mystery given the departure of #1 Gary Brightwell but Michael Wiley averaged 7.2 YPC LY and they add Drake Anderson from Northwestern. They need to be better up front run blocking and in pass protection (#11 PAC 12 sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

The Cats finished DEAD LAST in conference in total defense (473 YPG) and scoring defense (39.8 PPG) and were particularly brutal vs the run (#125 FBS, 271 YPG) (!). Former Michigan DC Don Brown has his work cut out for him but at least he’ll have some experienced guys to work with in 2021 (9 returning starters). Job #1 just might be “find a pass rush” as they only booked two sacks in 2020. The DL is a bit of a mystery but they do have some big bodies to put out there. DE JB Brown has 6.5 career sacks. LB Anthony Pandy led the team in tackles LY and he’ll be helped out by a pair of LB transfers that Arizona hopes can be solid contributors. CB may be their best situation as Chris Roland-Wallace is a keeper and they add Isaiah Rutherford from Notre Dame. Don Brown will find a way to get more PENETRATION but there’s still a noticeable overall lack of talent.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The kicking game looks strong with the return of PK Lucas Ravrisik (6/7 FG LY, 2-3 40+) and P Tyler Loop (38.8 net). They could use some spice at KR and PR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s a NASTY start for a rebuilding team as they battle BYU and San Diego St right out of the gate. They draw Oregon and Washington out of the North and finish with two games ON THE HIGHWAY (Washington St, Arizona St).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes July 24

Over 2.5 -120

Under 2.5 +100

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

Northern Arizona should be a 900 STAR POWER LOCK for a win. It’s tough to find two more victories in that schedule.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

After rattling off four consecutive wins in the first half of 2019 the Wildcats have dropped 12 consecutive games. They last tasted victory on the road at Colorado in 2019 (W 35-30).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

You don’t need us to tell you this is a significant rebuilding project. The Sun Devils turned things around nicely but it took a few years. This feels like a much bigger task but we hope to see them bag a win or three this season and give their fans something to cheer about.

Oregon St Beavers 2021 College Football Preview

Oregon St Beavers 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 22, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 2-5

ATS – 4-3

The Beavers were much better than their record indicated during the casedemic season. They took down Cal and Oregon (!) and were very competitive in the five losses. The largest margin of defeat was 13 points and they lost by a mere six points at Washington AND Utah. Let’s check in with team and see if there’s a chance for more improvement this year.

Oregon St Beavers 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

Oregon St averaged 400+ YPG LY for the third consecutive season and did some good work on the ground (198 YPG, #4 PAC 12). They’re REALLY gonna miss explosive RB Jermar Jefferson who was MUST SEE TV on most occasions LY (858, 6.5, 7 TD; NFL – Lions). Jefferson rushed for 100+ in 5/6 games and he ripped Oregon apart for 226 and 2 TD. RB Deshaun Fenwick was a nice grab from the Gamecocks but the rushing attack will almost certainly suffer without Jefferson. The QB room is deep and it’s unclear who will get the starting gig. Tristan Gebbia and Chance Nolan both return (9-5 TD to INT combined) and they add Sam Noyer (Colorado) to the mix. The WR group is deep but it’s unclear if they have a true #1 option. An experienced offensive line will help things and note that C Nathan Eldridge is one of the best in the Big 12 at his position.

DEFENSE

The Beavers struggled once again LY on defense. They were #110 in the FBS in run defense, #77 in pass efficiency D, whilst booking a mere 7 sacks. Eight starters return to the mix including eight of their top-nine tacklers. Nobody booked more than two sacks (!) in 2020 so it’ll be interesting to see if they can get much of a pass rush this season, and they don’t have much size up front. The LB unit looks solid with the return of the team’s top-two tacklers in Omar Speights and Avery Roberts (7.5 TFL combined) but they’ll need to get better play out of the secondary. An improved pass rush would help in that regard.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Things appear to be in decent shape with the return of P Luke Loecher and PK Everett Hayes (5/7 FG LY, 2/3 in 2019). They also have continuity at PR and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The Beavers should be able to take care of Hawaii and Idaho at home but have a tough (but winnable) road opener at Purdue. They draw both USC and Utah from the South.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 22

Over 4.5 -130

Under 4.5 +110

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Might take a small taste. They could start 3-0 (or 2-1) and they aren’t that much worse (on paper) than most PAC 12 squads. And they beat Oregon LY.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Per the excellent College Football News website, the last time Oregon St won a season opener on the road vs a Power 5 opponent was back in 1965 (Illinois).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

HC Jonathan Smith has this program is heading in the right direction. Is this the year they take a big step forward? They look decent on both sides of the football compared to recent Beaver squads and are capable of pulling an upset or two and making their first bowl game since 2013. Go Beavs!

California Golden Bears 2021 College Football Preview

California Golden Bears 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 24, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 1-3

ATS – 1-3

The Bears started the season with an ugly blowout loss at UCLA (L 34-10) but were competitive in their final three games. The last of those three affairs was an upset win over Oregon (W 21-17). It’s tough to take much from the abbreviated casedemic season but it wasn’t a total disaster. Let’s check in with the program and see if they have the potential to get things back on track.

California Golden Bears 2020 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Golden Bears have to figure out how to get things going on offense. They’ve been brutal over the last three years and 2020 was no exception (#101 FBS rushing offense, #101 passing). QB Chase Garbers was MEH LY but note that he was pretty good in 2019 (61%, 14-3 TD to INT, 8.2), and he’s got 23 career starts. The RB group is deep and experienced and recall that Christopher Brown came close to a 1,000-yard season in 2019 (914, 8 TD). Almost everyone that caught a pass returns for duty this season with the only notable exception being WR Makai Polk (183, TD). Kekoa Crawford has potential to be a legit #1 dood and don’t sleep on freshman TE Jermaine Terry (6-4, 275). The OL has to be better this year as they only averaged 3.4 net yards per carry LY and allowed 15 sacks in 4G (last PAC 12 sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

It was obviously a small sample, but the Bears took a small step back on defense LY and finished #6 in the PAC 12 in run defense and #9 in pass efficiency D. They should be back to their recent standards in 2021 with the return of 8 starters and 12 of their top-13 tacklers. The LB unit is the HEARTBEAT of the stop unit and they have a pair of special players in Kuony Deng and Cameron Goode. Deng was the leading tackler LY and Goode led the team with 3 sacks and 8 TFL in 4G. The duo combined for 12.5 sacks in 2019. Three starters return on the back end and they have a fine safety tandem. Losing star CB Camryn Bynum stings (NFL). We worry about the defense up front given the loss of DE Zeandae Johnson and note that DL Brett Johnson will miss the season due to injury.

SPECIAL TEAMS

They were average across the board LY but at least all of the key pieces return for action. PK Dario Longhetto hit 4/5 FGA but they were #107 in the FBS in net punting LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s likely that they lose at least one of their first two games (Nevada, at TCU) and have to face Oregon AND Washington on the road in the first half of the season. Three of their final four games are ON THE HIGHWAY.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at UCLA (November 27th)

This comes after the rivalry game with Stanford and could be a lay-down-and-die spot if they have no shot at bowl eligibility.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes July 24

Over 6 -105

Under 6 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

They look average on both sides of the football and seven wins would be impressive.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

Memorial Stadium was built to honor Berkeley alumni, students, and other Californians who died in World War I and modeled it after the Colosseum in Rome.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Justin Wilcox has done a pretty good job since coming aboard four years ago and note that the Bears had back-to-back winning seasons in 2018 and 2019 before the shortened scamdemic campaign. Can they regain that momentum? Our best guess is a 6-6 record and a bowl bid. It doesn’t appear as though the offense will be explosive enough, nor the defense strong enough for much better than that. In any event, Go Bears!

Washington St Cougars 2021 College Football Preview

Washington St Cougars 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 24, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 1-3

ATS – 1-3

The Cougars started the Nick Rolovich era with a road win over the Beavers (W 38-28) but then dropped their next three decisions. Those losses came against TOUGH foes (Oregon, USC, Utah) and only one of those defeats came in blowout fashion (at USC; L 38-13). Let’s see how things look heading into the 2021.

Washington St Cougars 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Cougars only managed to average 27 PPG (#10 PAC 12) and 384 YPG (#10) but as noted above, they didn’t get the easiest draw last season. QB Jayden de Laura had his ups and downs LY (5-4 TD to INT, 2 rush TD) and will be challenged for the starting gig by Tennessee transfer Jarrett “Pick 6” Guarantano. Last season’s back-up Cammon Cooper is also in the mix. They should get excellent production out of the WR group in this offense and the top-two targets (Travell Harris, Renard Bell) are back for duty. Deon McIntosh emerged as a legit #1 RB LY (323, 6.2, 3 TD) and note that Max Borghi had a MASSIVE 2019 season (817 rush yards, 86 receptions! for 597Y). Four starters return up front and they should be better in year two of the system.

DEFENSE

Washington St was ripped apart for 38.5 PPG (#118 FBS scoring defense) and were particularly brutal vs the pass (last P12, pass D, 307 YPG). Essentially every player that had more than five tackles LY returns for duty so it’s likely we’ll see improvement. The LB group is experienced and seniors Jahad Woods and Justus Rogers were both in the top-three in tackles back in 2019. The secondary needs some work but add CB Chris Jackson (Michigan St) and CB Kaleb Ford-Dement who booked 13 PBU and 2 INT in 2019 at Old Dominion. We still worry about their ability to stop the run (5.0 YPC LY, #8 PAC 12) but the Coogs did manage to book 8 sacks LY in 4G.

SPECIAL TEAMS

DANGER! DANGER!

They need to find replacements for both parts of their excellent P and PK duo. Hopefully they can harness some AUSTRALIAN MAGIC with P Nick Haberer.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s CUPCAKE CITY the first two weeks when they face Utah St and Portland St. Their first two PAC 12 tests are nasty (USC, at Utah) and three of their last four games are road contests.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – BYU (October 23rd)

This game is a PAC 12 SANDWICH SPOT (Stanford, at Arizona St) and BYU is tougher than a $3 steak.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 24

Over 6 -120

Under 6 +100

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

They’ll start 2-0 but it won’t be easy to bag five more wins the rest of the way. Note the road games at Arizona St, Oregon, and Washington late in the year.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Washington leads the Apple Cup series with the Cougars to the tune of 73-32-6 and have won seven straight. They first played back in 1900.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

We have confidence in Mike Rolovich’s ability to turn this team into a legit PAC 12 North contender but it looks like it’ll need more work. The offense should be really good this year but the defense still looks like one of the weaker stop units in the conference. There’s definite upside with this team but the schedule doesn’t do them any favors. We’ll call for anywhere between five and seven wins including at least one decent upset along the way.

Stanford Cardinal 2021 College Football Preview

Stanford Cardinal 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 22, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-2

ATS – 4-2

Stanford TOOK A LICKING but KEPT ON TICKING. They lost their first two games of the plandemic season (Oregon, Colorado) but get full marks for running the table the rest of the way. Sure, they were all close shaves (combined 10 points!), but wins are wins baby. They could have packed it in, but didn’t. On to 2021, yo.

2021 Stanford Cardinal Outlook

OFFENSE

The Cardinal got a pretty good season out of QB Davis Mills LY and he’s off to the NFL. That leaves Stanford with a very inexperienced QB room. That battle will almost certainly be between highly-touted freshman Tanner McKee (6-6, 228) and last year’s back-up Jack West. Stay tuned. Three of their top-four THROW GAME targets are back but they lose #1 WR Simi Fehoko. We have high hopes for the rushing attack that sputtered AGAIN last season (133 YPG, #9 PAC 12) given the return of their top-two RBs. Austin Jones had 9 (!) rushing TDs and three 100-yard games in 2020 and Nathaniel Peat averaged 7.0 YPC. The OL has good size but lose a couple of starters including an NFL-bound center.

DEFENSE

The stop unit has been pretty crappy by their standards the L2Y (#9, #7 PAC 12 total defense), and they lose some key contributors including leading tackler LB Curtis Robinson and leading sacker DL Thomas Schaffer. They’ve got to find a way to stop the run (#112 FBS LY) (!) and it’s not clear how much talent they have up front. DE Thomas Booker is a keeper (4 sacks, #4 tackles 2019). LB Levani Damuni is a good piece to build around (#2 tackles) and that unit looks to be in good shape overall. The secondary struggled LY (64%, just 2 INT) and they hope that new stars can emerge at CB. We’re not as high on this year’s D as many but would be happy to be wrong.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The group was average at best last year and they need to find a replacement for long-time PK Jet Toner. There’s nothing to get excited about here other than Joshua Karty is a very highly-regarded recruit and will take over for Toner.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The schedule-maker must have a BLOOD VENDETTA going with Stanford as the docket is brutal. They have twelve P5 opponents and miss Arizona and Colorado from the South. At least they have 4L5 games at home.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Oregon St (November 13th)

This game follows yuuuge games with Washington and Utah AND precedes the “BIG GAME” with Cal.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 22

Over 4 -105

Under 4 -115

Update August 20

Over 4.5 +110

Under 4.5 -130

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over. < if you can still find a ‘4’ >

The roster doesn’t look great and the schedule is PURE EVIL but that number is too low. Don’t think they’ll go 3-9 or worse.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

TRIVIA TIME, yo. Who’s the only Stanford Cardinal player to win the Heisman Trophy? Andrew Luck? Nope. Christian McCaffrey? Nope. John Elway? Nope. It was QB Jim Plunkett who won the award in 1970. That’s a FACT CHECK TRUE.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Not so long ago, the Cardinal would rattle off double-digit win seasons like NOBODY’S BUSINESS. The defense doesn’t look great on paper, who knows what they’ll get from the QB position, and the schedule doesn’t do them any favors. Having said all that, they might be better than we think and give them a shot to book six wins and get to a bowl game.
