Syracuse Orange 2021 College Football Preview

Syracuse Orange 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 6, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 1-10

ATS – 6-5

It was BLOODBATH CITY during the 2020 scamdemic season as the Orange managed just a single win in eleven games (Georgia Tech). We all suspected it would be a long season but it was still painful for Orange fans. To be fair, they were hit particularly hard by the plandemic.

They’re only a few years removed from a 10-win season so let’s see if there’s hope heading into 2021.

Syracuse Orange 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

It’s hard to describe what we witnessed last year on offense. Maybe UMass fans can relate. The Orange ranked #125 in the FBS in total offense, #121 rushing, #110 passing, and #117 in scoring (17.8). Three QBs got a decent amount of work in 2020 and they hope to shake things up by getting a NEW SHOOTER to lead the offense. Mississippi St transfer Garrett Shrader comes to town and is the favorite to win the job. He showed some HOT FLASHES and is certainly mobile so we have to believe this is an upgrade. The WR group is above-average given the return of Taj Harris (58-733, 12.6, 5 TD) and Anthony Queeley. It would be very beneficial if they could find someone to stretch the field. The RB unit is sneaky-deep with the return of #1 RB Sean Tucker (626, 4 TD) and a pair of 2020 opt-outs (J Howard, A Adams). The OL has to do a much better job as they allowed 38 sacks LY (dead last ACC sacks/game) and paved the way for a pathetic net of 92 YPG on the ground.

DEFENSE

Things weren’t that much better on this side of the football LY as they allowed 464 YPG for the 2nd consecutive season (#112 FBS) and were steamrolled for 200+ YPG on the ground for (again) the 2nd straight year. Ten starters are back as well as 11/12 top tacklers so there is, in theory, hope on the horizon. The DL has to be better this yr (right?) with the return of three seniors and DT McKinley Williams does a good job inside. #1 tackler Mikel Jones returns to lead the LB unit and don’t sleep on Geoff Cantin-Arku who led the team in sacks (4) LY and was the #4 tackler. The secondary features some interesting pieces including CB Garrett Williams who had 10 (!) PBU in 2020 as a freshman. Can they overcome the loss of two NFL DC on the back end? <grabs popcorn>

SPECIAL TEAMS

They’ll need to replace their excellent P Nolan Cooney but they do bring back ALL-UNIVERSE PK Andre Szmyt who’s hit 56-65 FGA in his career with Syracuse. Also note that KR Trebor Pena took one back to the HIZZY JIZZY WIZZY LY and averaged well over 30 yards per return (7 KR). Bad news? Their STC is off to Vanderbilt.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s a decent non-conference slate as they face Ohio, Rutgers, and something called Albany. They get a tough draw from the Coastal division (Hokies, Pitt).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing overly-spooky is noted.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes August 6

Over 3.5 +125

Under 3.5 -145

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

They have six (!) “winnable” games in the first half of the season but it gets evil in the 2nd half.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Despite being heralded as one of the best head coaches of all-time, Dino Babers has a 24-36 record with the Orange, and that includes a 10-3 mark in 2018.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This will almost certainly be a much-improved team over what we saw in 2020. There’s SNEAKY UPSIDE on both sides of the football but the ACC is pretty deep and it’s hard to find too many conference wins on paper. A bowl game would be a yuuuuge achievement. We’ll call for 4-5 wins leading to another season of BABERS BALL in 2022.

Florida St Seminoles 2021 College Football Preview

Florida St Seminoles 2021 College Football Preview

2020 Recap

Record – 3-6

ATS – 3-6

Things got off to a rough start as they were upset by Georgia Tech in the opener and were subsequently POLEAXED by YOUR Miami Hurricanes (52-10). The rest of the season was pretty much forgettable other than the yuuuge upset over the potent North Carolina Tar Heels that came out of nowhere (W 31-28). The Noles smashed Duke in the season finale whilst hanging 56 so they come into 2021 with a tiny bit of momentum.

Florida St Seminoles 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Noles used a bunch of different QBs for various reasons LY and the best of the bunch overall was Jordan Travis who led the team in rushing (!) whilst struggling with consistency through the air (6-6 TD to INT, 55%). One of the most intriguing stories heading into the 2021 college football season has to be new starting QB Mackenzie Milton who comes back after two years of dealing with a gruesome knee injury. He tossed 72 TD passes with UCF and is hopefully exactly what the offense needs. The only significant loss at TE/WR is #2 WR Tamorrion Terry but it’s unclear if they have a true #1 option. TE Camren McDonald is a keeper (263, 11.4, 2 TD LY). #1 RB Jashaun Corbin (5 YPC LY) leads a RB room that will probably have a committee approach, at least to start the season. Florida St has had OL issues for what seems like decades but this year they boast five returning starters and 100 career starts. Florida St should average 30 PPG for the first time since 2016 (!) if Milton can stay healthy.

DEFENSE

Yup. Look up HOT GARBAGE on the GOOGLE MACHINE and that was the defense LY. They allowed 36 PPG (#13 ACC) and 456 YPG (#13 ACC) whilst booking a mere 10 sacks (dead last ACC sacks per game). Their top-four tacklers are back in the mix, and that includes a pretty good LB duo in Amari Gainer (#1 tackles, 5 TFL) and Emmett Rice (7.5 TFL) who will be available at some point this year after suffering an injury in spring practice. That’s based on a recent update from HC Mike Norvell. There are some interesting pieces on the DL. DT Robert Cooper is a BIG body (6’2 335) as is NT Fabien Lovett. They also add DE Keir Thomas from South Cackalacky. Our primary concern is a secondary that performed poorly in 2020 that loses a few key components including 2nd round NFL draft pick CB Asante Samuel. It still feels like this defense has a long way to go.

SPECIAL TEAMS

P Alex Mastromanno did a good job LY (41.3 net) but their two PKs combined for a brutal 8/14 mark on FGA. Both of those guys are back. They could definitely use some spice at KR and PR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They have a tough opener (Notre Dame) and draw North Carolina and Miami out of the Coastal division. Their final two games are on the road.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Boston College (November 20th)

Looks like a letdown spot coming off the game with the hated Hurricanes. It’s an even worse spot if they’re out of the bowl picture.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes August 5

Over 5.5 -115

Under 5.5 +105

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

231 of our 245 sets of power ratings seem to think that they’ll finish with 5-6 wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

After rattling off five consecutive double-digit winning seasons Florida St has compiled a disappointing record of 21-26 dating back to 2017. That includes finishing with a losing record in three consecutive years.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The ACC is a lot more interesting when Florida St is GOOD. That’s a FACT CHECK TRUE. It’s become clear that Mike Norvell has a lot more work to do than we first thought but there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the offense can live up to its potential and lead the team to a bowl game. One step at a time, yo.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2021 College Football Preview

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 5, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-5

ATS – 6-3

The DEACS drew a tough opener having to face the mighty Clemson Tigers (L 37-13) and lost the following week to NC State. They turned the corner with a win over something called Campbell and ended up winning four (!) consecutive games. Then came the losses once again. They dropped their final three contests including a Mayo Bowl loss to Wisconsin (L 42-28).

Wake Forest Demon Deacons 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

QB Sam Hartman was pretty good LY and led the #26 passing offense in the FBS. He only threw 5 INTs in 273 attempts (13 TD) but completed just 58% of his passes. Wake Forest has one of the most underrated WR groups in the conference and they return everyone of consequence. Jaquarii Roberson is a legit #1 (62-926, 14.9, 8 TD) and Donavon Greene averaged 20 YPC LY. The Deacs lose one half of their fine 1-2 RB combo in Kenneth Walker but #1 RB Christian Beal-Smith comes back after a fine 2020 campaign (732, 5 TD, 5.2, three 100Y games). The OL has the potential to be REALLY good with the return of five starters (100+ career starts) but they’ll need to clean up pass protection just a wee bit (#12 ACC sacks allowed per game LY). Overall, this offense has the look of a SPICY MEATBALL.

DEFENSE

The Demon Deacons struggled on defense LY and allowed 400+ YPG for the fourth consecutive season. They also failed to ACHIEVE SUFFICIENT PENETRATION as evidenced by their paltry sack total of 17 (#14 ACC sacks/game). Nine starters are back on this side of the football but they’ll miss leading sacker Carlos BASHAM (5) (NFL – Bills) as well as leading tackler Ja’Cquez Williams. There’s concern about size and pass rush ability up front but NT Miles Fox is an excellent piece to build around. A pair of starters return at LB (#3, #4 tacklers) and the secondary is deep and the most talented unit. The Deacons led the ACC in INT/game in 2020. This defense looks average overall and could really use a dangerous pass rusher or two to emerge.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Things look promising with the return of their excellent PK Nick Sciba (13/15 FG LY, 7-8 40+) and Donovan Greene was dangerous on KR in 2020 (34.0, TD, 7 KR).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – There’s a legit shot for these guys to get off to a really hot start. They open with Old Dominion and something called Norfolk St and their first “nasty” game comes in November (at UNC). They miss the big boys from the Coastal division but three of their final four games are ON THE HIGHWAY.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Army (October 23rd)

This will be their 3rd road test in a month and it’s sandwiched between ACC tilts.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes August 5

Over 6.5 -135

Under 6.5 +115

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

They’ll be involved in a lot of high-scoring FIREFIGHTS but should be able to cobble together seven wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Wake’s only ACC Championship came back in 2006 when they beat the Yellow Jackets in a 9-6 SNOT BUBBLER. That was the lowest winning score for an ACC champ ever. The team was led by ALL-MEGALOCKS TEAM member QB Riley Skinner and featured FG kicker Sam SWANK.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

These guys should be able to play with anyone given how POTENT the offense will be in 2021. The question will be whether or not the defense can do its part and get enough stops when they play the better teams in the conference. Case in point. They’ve lost the last three games to Clemson by a combined score of 678-3 **. There are some tough road games on the docket but we foresee smooth sailing into bowl season.

** Fact check false. Actually it’s 152-19.

Boston College Eagles 2021 College Football Preview

Boston College Eagles 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 5, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 6-5

ATS – 6-5

The season went back and forth like a TEETER-TOTTER for the Eagles as they finished with a HO HUM mark of 6-5. They didn’t win more than two games in a row, and they didn’t suffer back-to-back losses. They came very close to SHOCKING THE WORLD in games vs UNC and Clemson and were competitive vs Notre Dame. Not bad, yo.

Boston College Eagles 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Eagles rode the arm of QB Phil Jurkovec and put up fine numbers through the air (284 YPG, #24 FBS). That was a yuuuuuuuuuuuge improvement over previous seasons. Jurkovec will miss stud TE Hunter Long (685, 5 TD) but gets back essentially the entire starting WR corps including emerging star Zay Flowers (56-892, 15.9, 9 TD). CJ Jewis and Jaelen Gill each averaged 15+ YPC LY, and don’t sleep on Kobay White who led the team with 5 TD receptions in 2019. They couldn’t get anything going on the ground LY (102 YPG, #118 FBS, 3.1 YPC) and lose #1 RB David Bailey. It’s gonna be a committee approach this year. The OL will be really good and features 1st Team ACC center Alec Lindstrom. They’ll almost certainly top 30 PPG for the first time since 2018.

DEFENSE

Boston College was pretty average on defense LY (#8 ACC total defense) as they allowed 400+ YPG for the third consecutive season. They’ve slid quite a bit recently in terms of PPG, yardage, and sack production. Eight starters are back but the few losses are massive. The top-two tacklers and defensive STALWARTS at LB (Isaiah McDuffie, Max Richardson) both need to be replaced and that’s a big concern to our DEEP ACC INSIDERS. Nobody’s back that had more than 5.5 TFL or 2.5 sacks in 2020. Three starters return up front but they’re not an overwhelming group on paper in terms of size or ability to get PENETRATION. The only unit that needs rebuilding is the LB group (see above). All starters return on the back end and they get a sweet transfer at safety from Florida St (Jaiden Lars-Woodbey). This feels like an average (or below) secondary unless they can find some pass rushers to help them out.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Things appear to be in good shape with all of the key pieces back in 2021. PK Aaron Boumerhi was 16-20 on FGA LY (16-18 inside 50).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s not too bad. They’re a mortal 700 STAR COVID FRAUD BUSTER LOCK to open 3-0 and get a good draw from the Coastal (Hokies, Jackets). They only have one road game in November.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Georgia Tech (November 13th)

This will be their 4th road game in just over 40 days and the Yellow Jackets will be a much-improved bunch.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes August 5

Over 7 -120

Under 7 +100

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

See below.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

“Here we go again. Again.” <Tugg Speedman> <Tropic Thunder>

The Eagles have won either six or seven games every season from 2013-2020. The lone exception was in 2015 (3-9).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This is gonna be a fun team to watch. We really like Jurkovec at QB and those WRs are flat out NASTY. The defense? Hmm. It’s possible they’re gonna be mediocre. If that’s the case it’s hard to support a view of them booking more than 6-7 wins. The schedule sure helps, that’s for sure. We’ll call for a seven win season. Game on!

NC State Wolfpack 2021 College Football Preview

NC State Wolfpack 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 5, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 8-4

ATS – 8-4

The Pack booked a very impressive eight-win campaign and exceeded many folks’ expectations including our own. They started fast (4-1) and finished well winning their final four regular season games. Kentucky took them down in the Gator Bowl (L 23-21) but they have to head into 2021 feeling pretty good about themselves. Let’s go!

NC State Wolfpack 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Pack proved that they could be pretty good on offense with either Bailey Hockman or Devin Leary under center (combined 21-13 TD to INT, 62%) and ranked #36 in the FBS in passing offense. Hockman threw a few too many picks and is no longer here. Devin Leary takes over and he looked solid before being injured LY. The WR corps is one of the most lethal in the ACC and returns the top-three who combined for 1,744Y and 13 TDs in 2020 (Emezie, Thomas, Carter). Losing ace TE Cary Angeline (6 TD) stings a bit. The HITS KEEP COMING on offense when you think about the awesome 1-2 RB combo of Zonovan Knight and Ricky Person (14 TDs, 1400Y+). The OL brings back over 70 starts and they’re strong at LT and C. Hopefully the pass protection can improve (32 sacks allowed LY, #9 ACC per game basis). NC State could be really good on offense if Leary is as good as we think. <grabs popcorn>

DEFENSE

The defense displayed a bit of a SOFT UNDERBELLY vs the run LY (174 YPG, #7 ACC) but were decent vs the pass (#3 pass efficiency D). 10 starters are back on this side of the football (top-11 tacklers) and there’s reason to expect a good-sized improvement overall. DE Daniel Joseph is a dangerous pass rusher (6.5 sacks LY), they have good size inside, and the addition of DE Cory Durden from Florida St can’t hurt. The LB duo of Peyton Wilson and Isaiah Moore (top-two tacklers, 22.5 TFL combined) is one of the best in the ACC, and all starters are back in the secondary. Depth back there is also beefed up with a few interesting transfers.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Continuity abounds. They return a decent P,PK combo in Trenton Gill and Christopher Dunn and have potent weapons at PR and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They don’t have any KILLERS to face in non-conference play. The road game at Mississippi St is a winnable one. The draw from the Coastal division is a bit rough (Miami, North Carolina), and note that they have a stretch of four road games in five starting mid-season.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Wake Forest (November 13th)

This will be their fourth road game in less than 30 days and Wake can SCORE the FOOTBALL.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes August 5

Over 6.5 +125

Under 6.5 -105

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Don’t see too many unwinnable games on the schedule but it doesn’t help to draw the Hurricanes and Tar Heels. Still feels like a good shot at plus money.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Pack has won or shared 7 ACC Championships but haven’t turned the trick since 1979 when they edged out Clemson and Maryland by a game.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Wolfpack have been a quietly-consistent program under the tutelage of HC Dave Doeren and have booked six winning seasons in the last seven years. This has the potential to be his best team yet with a ton of returning starters AND most importantly, TALENTED doods on both side of the football. The schedule isn’t easy but these guys look dangerous on paper and are a legit SURPRISE PACKAGE.

Louisville Cardinals 2021 College Football Preview

Louisville Cardinals 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 5, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-7

ATS – 5-5-1

The VILLE started the season with a win over Western Kentucky but then proceeded to go into a tail spin for the next number of weeks. They played Pitt and Notre Dame tough but got wiped out by a rebuilding Georgia Tech squad. LUA-VUH showed a bit of life at the end of the year winning two of their final two contests (Syracuse, Wake) and head into 2021 with a TITCH of momentum.

Louisville Cardinals 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

There was nothing wrong with the offense LY as they ranked #29 in the FBS in rushing offense and #30 in passing efficiency. New HC Scott Satterfield has definitely got them humming (444, 447 YPG L2Y). Electric QB Malik Cunningham returns off a fine year (64%, 20-12 TD to INT, 609 rush, 7 TD) and just needs to cut down on his mistakes. Note that he has a very good 42-17 TD to INT mark over the L2Y and 18 (!) rushing TDs since 2018. Three of their top-four RBs are back but they lose #1 Javian Hawkins to the NFL (Falcons). Continuity from year to year in the THROW GAME is very important and the Cards will have to deal with losing the DEVASTATING WR combo of Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell (combined 1400+ receiving yards LY) as both of those men are ALSO off to the pros. #3 WR Braden Smith returns as does their fine pass-catching TE Marshon Ford (309, 6 TD). The offensive line is large and talented (4 RS) but recall they were dead last in the AAC last year in TFL allowed per game.

DEFENSE

LUA-VUH was sneaky good on defense LY (#3 ACC total defense, 369 YPG) and allowed just 26.6 PPG. The D has improved yuuuuge under Satterfield from allowing 44.1 (!) PPG in 2018. Just two of the top-seven tacklers return and there are some holes to fill, and that includes their top-two in TFL (LB Rodjay Burns, LB Dorian Etheridge). There are still some nice pieces to build around including #1 tackler LB C.J. Avery, star CB Kei’trel Clark, and leading sacker Monty Montgomery (4). We’ll call for a slight drop in production but the downside risk is greater than the upside with this bunch.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK James Turner comes back after an excellent 2020 campaign (13/15 FG, 6-8 40+) but they’ll need to find a new punter. The PR and KR doods were MEH LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The opener with Ole Miss is SPICY. Get ‘cho calculators, yo. They also draw UCF and Kentucky in non-conference play. The draw from the Coastal is nice (Duke, Virginia). Note that their first two ACC games are ON THE HIGHWAY.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Wake Forest (October 2nd)

This could be a letdown spot after the firefights with UCF and Florida St.

Season Win Total

Per 5 Dimes August 4

Over 6.5 -115

Under 6.5 -105

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

We don’t see many free squares on the docket. Seven wins won’t be easy.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Cardinals went a combined 6-17 in 2018 and 2020. They were (-12) in turnover margin in each of those seasons. Gotta protect the rock, buh buh.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This isn’t an easy team to get a handle upon. You never get better on offense losing three stars at RB and WR, but we really like Cunningham at QB, even though he can be frustrating to watch at times. The defense may have overachieved a season ago and they’ll need to pull their weight if the Cards have any hopes of making noise in the ACC. A bowl bid is a reasonable goal.

Pittsburgh Panthers 2021 College Football Preview

Pittsburgh Panthers 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 4, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 6-5

ATS – 5-5-1

The Panthers began in fine fashion taking down three TOMATO CANS including two lower-tier ACC opponents (Syracuse, LUA-VUH) but then hit the skids losing four consecutive games. They rebounded to win three of their final four contests whilst scoring 34+ in each of those victories. It’s hard to take much from the 6-5 record but it’s worth noting that the six teams they defeated were, on the whole, PURE FILTH.

Pittsburgh Panthers 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

Pittsburgh wasn’t much to look at LY on offense as they had no success running the ball (#111 FBS) and finished #98 in passing efficiency (14-12 TD to INT) despite throwing for a decent amount of yards. QB Kenny Pickett is back for what feels like his 16th season ** and needs to be more efficient at this point in his career. He does have sneaky-good mobility as evidenced by his 8 rushing TDs in 2020. They have a solid 1-2 RB combo in Vincent Davis and AJ Davis (898 combined rushing yards LY) and don’t sleep on youngster Israel Abanikanda. Seven of the top-eight players in terms of receiving yards return this season and Pickett does a great job distributing the ball to numerous players. #1 WR Jordan Addison led the team with an impressive 60 receptions LY. The OL looks to be in decent shape but they’ll definitely miss ALL-UNIVERSE center Jimmy Morrisey who’s off to the NFL (Rayyyyydaaazzz).

** fact check – it’s not

DEFENSE

The Panthers were a BRICK WALL vs the run once again LY and allowed an impossibly-low 94 YPG (#3 FBS). They finished T1 in the country in sacks (46) (!) and that was after booking 51 of those BAD BOYS in 2019. They’ll have to replace an elite set of DEs in Patrick Jones and Rashad Weaver who combined for 16.5 sacks in 2020. And it gets worse. Gone are the great safety duo of Damar Hamlin (#1 tackler) and Paris Ford. Thankfully, Pat Narduzzi and friends can COACH EM UP and note they only had 5 returning starters on this side of the ball in each of the last two seasons. They’ll be fine up front as they have a good amount of size inside and they always find pass rushers at DE. Note that DE John Morgan tallied 4 sacks and 4 QBH in limited action LY. The LB group is one of the best in the ACC and boasts a small handful of excellent players. Sir’Vocea Dennis booked 14.5 (!) TFL in 2020 and isn’t even guaranteed a starting role. If there’s a weak link it’s probably in the back end given the aforementioned losses.

SPECIAL TEAMS

ARGH. The Panthers will be without their excellent PK and LONG BOMBER Alex Kessman but bring back P Kirk Christodoulou who booked an impressive 42 yd net LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The non-conference docket is manageable as the most difficult game is a road trip to Tennessee. They draw the Tigers from the Atlantic but at least they get them in Pittsburgh. Miami and North Carolina must also play the Panthers on their home field.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Duke (November 6th)

This could be a letdown spot as this game comes after back-to-back tough ones (Clemson, Miami) and before and date with UNC.

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Feels like a pretty safe bet for at least a push. Hey, that’s not ideal but it’s hard to see them losing six games and killing the wager completely.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Pitt has won between six and eight games in each of the last 11 years. The exception? They went ROGUE in 2017 with a mark of 5-7.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

We rate these guys with a few other teams in the division just a notch below Miami and North Carolina. And they get both of those teams at home. They’ll be a tough out for everyone (yup, even Clemson, check the history books) but you know they’ll crap the bed once or twice when you least expect it. Decent longshot potential for division spoils and 7-8 wins seems very doable.

Virginia Cavaliers 2021 College Football Preview

Virginia Cavaliers 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 4, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 5-5

ATS – 7-3

The Cavaliers got off to a tough start losing four of their first five games. Then. The MAGIC happened. They SHOCKED the WORLD with a win over the potent Tar Heels (W 44-41) and won every game the rest of the way until the season finale loss to the hated Hokies (L 33-15). All things considered, 5-5 wasn’t a disaster. On to 2021.

Virginia Cavaliers 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The offense was decent LY, particularly when QB Brennan Armstrong was healthy (18-11 TD to INT, #1 rusher, 552, 5 TD). Armstrong returns this year but it’s unclear what kind of depth they have behind him should he go down. The overall talent level at RB is a bit suspect. Wayne Taulapapa doesn’t have the LOOK, and it’ll likely be a committee approach at RB. #1 WR Billy Kemp is back and he booked 67 (!) receptions LY, but note that he’s averaged WELL under 10 YPC in his career. ALL-MEGALOCKS team member WR Lavel Davis (20-515, 25.8, 5 TD LY) is out until at least November so that’s not great. They also lost TE Tony Poljan who’s now in the NFL (Ravens). Getting a TE replacement from Oklahoma St was yuuuuge (Jelani Woods). The OL is experienced and has good size and recall that they allowed just 20 sacks LY (#2 ACC sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

The defense slid for the 2nd consecutive season LY and they allowed 443 YPG (#10 ACC) whilst having problems defending the pass (#109 FBS pass efficiency D, 63%, 9.4/attempt). They were pretty solid vs the run (#37 FBS, 139 YPG) and booked 32 sacks (#4 ACC sacks/per game). #1 tackler Nick Jackson is back at LB but there are pair of yuuuge losses at the position given the departure of Zane Zandier and Charles Snowden who combined for 8.5 sacks in 2020. We expect the Cavs to be stingier on the back end as there is talent back there and they suffered a serious bout of injury bug a season ago. Don’t sleep on FS Joey Blount who had a big 2019 campaign (#2 tackler, 3.5 sacks, 3 INT) and he’s healthy and ready to go. NT Jahmeer Carter is a useful big body up front but hopefully they can find a pass rusher or two at DE.

SPECIAL TEAMS

RUH ROH. It’s RELOAD CITY as they need to find replacements at P, PK, and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The non-conference slate is a mixed bag. Two tough ones (at BYU, Irish) and two FREE SQUARES. They get an excellent draw out of the Atlantic (Wake, LUA-VUH). The last four games are pretty nasty.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at BYU (October 30th)

This tough road trip follows six ACC games and precedes a home game with Notre Dame. Not an ideal spot.

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

This team looks like the POSTER CHILD of 6-6.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Cavaliers have lost 16 of the last 17 games vs Virginia Tech.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

On paper, this appears to be an average team on both sides of the ball. We really like QB Armstrong but he’s a tough dood that doesn’t mind contact. Considering the back-up situation that’s not ideal, yo. The defense looks above average but needs to reload from a pass rush perspective. Who knows about the special teams? We’ll call for a 6-6 season and a minor bowl bid.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2021 College Football Preview

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 4, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 3-7

ATS – 5-5

The Yellow Jackets stormed out of the gate with a road win over the Seminoles (W 16-13) as double-digit underdogs and took down LUA-VUH a few weeks later (W 46-27). The schedule got tougher and they only managed to win one more game the rest of the way (Duke). It appears there are GREEN SHOOTS sprouting up in Atlanta. Let’s see if they can take a step forward in 2021.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

Georgia Tech improved their yardage output by over 100Y in 2020 and finally started to show some promise after transferring from the triple option offense a few years ago. They were particularly effective on the ground (191 YPG, #6 ACC) and bring back a REALLY deep RB unit this season (top-four RB). QB Jeff Sims led the team in rushing LY (492, 6 TD) and showed enough promise passing (13-13 TD to INT, 55%) to make us think they have a pretty good one. Three of their top-four WRs are back in action and we expect more production and efficiency through the air. The OL performed well LY and they are talented and LARGE. Adding LT Devin Cochran from Vanderbilt is a bonus.

DEFENSE

The Jackets struggled on D LY and allowed a whopping 459 YPG (#14 ACC). Ten starters are back but they’ll be without their best defensive player from 2020 in LB David Curry (#1 tackles, 9 TFL). The LB group should still be fine with #2 tackler Quez Jackson back and note they add Ayinde Eley from Maryland who booked over 100 tackles over 3Y with the Terps. The secondary is the strongest unit and includes a rock solid combo at safety (Tariq Carpenter, Juanyeh Thomas). Georgia Tech should be a lot better on defense this year, particularly if they can find a way to get to the QB (T12 sacks/game ACC LY).

SPECIAL TEAMS

Ouch. Losing an NFL-bound (!) punter really STINGS. The good news is that they bagged a pretty good veteran FGK from the Vols in Brent Cimaglia. Tech was GHASTLY in the FG department LY (3/8). There’s continuity at PR and KR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They should get off to a 2-0 start (N Illinois, Kennesaw St) but then face Clemson and UNC in back-to-back weeks. They also have road games at Miami and Notre Dame, not to mention the season finale with the mighty Georgia Bulldogs (H).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing overly-spooky is noted.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes August 4

Over 5 -115

Under 5 +105

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Under.

We really like the team on paper but that schedule is nasty. They’ll need to win four games after starting 2-0 to hit the ‘over’ and it’s hard to find too many wins on that docket.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The rivarly with the Georgia Bulldogs is referred to as CLEAN, OLD-FASHIONED HATE. How great is that, yo? They’ve been rivals since 1893 and the Bulldogs lead the series 68-41-5.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Geoff Collins definitely has this program moving in the right direction. They have a potential emerging star at QB and the defense should be significantly improved. The schedule is flat-out nasty so it seems to us that this squad will be better on paper (and vs the point spread) than the eventual win-loss record. Achieving bowl eligibility would be impressive but look out in 2022!

Duke Blue Devils 2021 College Football Preview

Duke Blue Devils 2021 College Football Preview

Created August 4, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 2-9

ATS – 4-7

Legend has it that everyone goes home happy when Duke loses, and if that’s the case, there were a lot of happy campers during last year’s plandemic season. They only managed to bag a pair of wins (Syracuse, Charlotte) and didn’t even treat their fans to many close calls. The cherry on top of the FECAL CAKE was a 48-ZIP loss to YOUR Miami Hurricanes.

Duke Blue Devils 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The output wasn’t much different LY than it had been in recent seasons but the yuuuuge issue was the comedy of turnovers. They turned it over an impossible 39 (!) times. Nobody else had more than 25. Fact check true. (-19) was the worst in the nation by far. INTERCEPTION MACHINE Chase Brice is gone and it’ll be up to QB Gunnar Holmberg to set things straight. He got a CUP OF COFFEE last year (25 attempts) and it’s unclear what his upside may be. The top-two targets are back at WR (Bobo, Calhoun) but they’ll need to find a way to hit more big plays. They averaged 6.3 YPA LY (#13 ACC) and just 11 yards per completion. They have one of the best RBs in the conference in Mataeo Durant (817, 6.8, 8 TD) and he’ll have to be the focal point of the offense. He booked four 100-yard games LY and ripped UNC for 132 and a TD. Three starters are back up front and they’ll need to find a way to actually protect the QB. They allowed 37 sacks LY (#114 FBS sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

The Blue Devils got worse in the scoring defense department for the 3rd consecutive season and did it in style by allowing 38.1 PPG (dead last ACC). The run D was especially heinous (#108 FBS). Just six starters return and they lose three of their top-five tacklers including a pair of doods who booked a combined 15.5 (!) sacks in 2020 (Rumph, Dimukeje). They only bring back one starter up front but they do have a small handful of big boys at DT that should help vs the run. One sweet add via the transfer portal is Jamion Franklin who comes over from Notre Dame (6’1 310). Leading tackler Shaka Heyward is back at LB (8.5 TFL) and they have one of the better sets of CBs in the ACC. Jeremiah Lewis put up a particularly strong stat line LY (#4 tackles, 3.5 TFL (!), 10 PBU, 2 INT) and he might not even bag a starting role.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Yes, guy.

The kicking game looks to be in excellent shape with the return of PK Charlie Ham (13/15 FG LY) and P Porter Wilson (41.2 net). They primary KR and PR are both back for duty.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – Well look at this? It seems pretty favorable. The first four games (non-conference) are all winnable and they get a great draw out of the Atlantic (Wake, LUA-VUH).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Kansas (September 25th)

The Jayhawks are PURE FILTH but we probably won’t be laying points with Duke in this spot as they have the yuuuuge game with North Carolina on deck.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes August 4

Over 3.5 -135

Under 3.5 +115

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

101 of 119 sets of our power ratings have them at 3-1 or 4-0 in September. They should be able to cobble together a win or two in ACC play.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Duke hasn’t had a positive turnover margin since 2014 (!) and are (-42) since that campaign. They were +7 combined in 2013/2014 and won 19 freaking games.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Well, we can’t tell a lie. It doesn’t look pretty on paper. It’s tough to know what to expect from the offense given the mystery at QB, but the good news is that there can only really be upside. AMIRITE? The defense should improve quite a bit although we’re still not convinced they’ll be any good vs the run. Special teams and coaching, not to mention a light schedule, should lead to four or five wins. Six is highly unlikely but not impossible.
