Arkansas St Red Wolves 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-7

ATS – 6-5

The Red Wolves started out well (3-2) and managed to SHOCK the WORLD at Kansas St when they upended the Wildcats by a score of 35-31. They struggled in the 2nd half of the year and dropped five straight contests before taking down hapless ULM in the season finale (W 48-15). The Red Wolves move forward with an interesting hire in Butch Jones who has previously coached at Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Tennessee.

Arkansas St Red Wolves 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Red Wolves moved like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE with the THROW GAME and finished the year ranked #2 (!) in the FBS in passing offense (364 YPG) and an impressive #17 in passing efficiency. Logan Bonner and Layne Hatcher combined for a great 39-9 TD to INT mark LY but Bonner moves on (Utah St). Hatcher loses two of his top-three targets including star Jonathan Adams who had an amazing campaign (1,111, 14.1, 12 TD) and garnered 2nd Team AA honors. There’s still reason for optimism given the emergence of Dahu Green (32-542, 5 TD LY) and Corey Rucker (28.3 YPC) (!) and they add a few interesting transfers into the mix. #1 RB Jamal Jones is gone but Marcel Murray and Lincoln Pare should provide a good 1-2 punch, and they also add transfers in the RB room that make the depth look pretty good. Four starters return up front and they boast impressive size and a lot of experience. This offense will still be potent, and note that Keith Heckendorf remains on staff as the OC.

DEFENSE

After three consecutive seasons of playing solid defense the Red Wolves have been brutal over the past two campaigns yielding an average of 35.7 PPG and 474 YPG. The passing defense has been particularly stinky. New DC Rob Harley will have his hands full as they move forward without star LB Justin Rice who led the team in tackles LY whilst booking an impressive 18.5 TFL, as well as stud DL Forrest Merrill (6.5 TFL). The DL still has a few good pieces in DE TW Ayers (6.5 TFL LY) and DT Terry Hampton (6 TFL) and they add a small handful of interesting transfers to the group. It remains to be seen how good the LB corps will be but is certainly can’t get better with the loss of one of the team’s best players in Justin Rice. The secondary was horrific LY but all of the key starting pieces are back. Note the addition of former ROLL TIDE CB SCOOBY Carter. This still looks like one of the weaker defenses in the Sun Belt.

SPECIAL TEAMS

They’ll have continuity in the kicking game. P Ryan Hanson was MEH LY (37.0 net) and PK Blake Grupe made but 11-18 FGA LY. They need to find new primary return men.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The non-conference schedule gets nasty after the opening FREE SQUARE vs Central Arkansas (Memphis, at Washington, at Tulsa). They draw both Coastal Carolina and Appalachian St from the East but at least both of those games are at home.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Tulsa (September 25th)

They’ll be coming back from a PAC 12 date (Washington) and note that FUN BELT action is on deck.

Season Win Total

Over 5 +110

Under 5 -120

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

The program has proven winning pedigree and would nibble at any number ‘over’ 4.5. Otherwise it’s a pass, yo.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Butch Jones is the latest in a number of high-profile (and successful) HCs that have taken the job in Jonesboro (Blake Anderson, Bryan Harsin, Gus Malzahn, Hugh Freeze).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This should be an entertaining team. Points O’PLENTY no matter who has the ball. Butch Jones should provide some life and the offense looks SPICY. The defense? YEESH. There’s still gonna be problems. We look for improved performance and a decent shot to get back to a bowl game.

South Alabama Jaguars 2021 College Football Preview

South Alabama Jaguars 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 4-7

ATS – 6-5

The Jags started out the season in fine form when they were able to SHOCK THE WORLD in the opener and take down Southern Miss on the road. They won three of their first five games but then faded down the stretch and finished with a mark of 4-7. They were able to fight well in their WEIGHT CLASS but couldn’t compete consistently with the better teams in the Sun Belt. New HC Kane Wommack (former Indiana DC) has some work to do.

South Alabama Jaguars 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Jaguars have to figure out a way to get the ground game going as they rushed for a mere 111 YPG LY (#112 FBS). Of course, a good reason for that meager total was the fact that they allowed an impossible 40 sacks in 11 games, and those negative yards count against rushing totals. #1 RB Carlos Davis is gone and nobody with more than 200Y on the ground is back for duty. The good news is that they snagged a transfer from Miss St (Kareem Walker) who will combine with LY’s #2 Terrion Avery. Four starters return on an OL that has good size but they need to be a lot better in pass protection. Two of their top-three WRs return including ALL-MEGALOCKS team member Jalen Tolbert who is an absolute BEAST (64-1085,17.0, 8 TD LY). We saved the best for last. Desmond Trotter had his moments at QB LY but they bring in transfer Jake Bentley (LY Utah) who has played for 17 years and for 15 different teams **. That will no doubt add stability and efficiency to the offense. New OC Major Applewhite is a yuuuuge upgrade.

** needs fact check

DEFENSE

The performance LY was MEH on the whole. They allowed 27.3 PPG which was their best showing since 2016, but they allowed 66% completions and 174 YPG on the ground whilst booking a mere 13 sacks in 11 games. This year’s DL appears to be solid on paper given the experience and depth but the LB unit will certainly miss Riley Cole who led the team in tackles (96) and TFL (6.5). It won’t hurt to add transfer Jamal Brooks from Missouri. The back end returns a lot of experience but they need to be a lot better than they were in 2020 (#100 FBS pass efficiency D). Safety Keith Gallmon and CB Devin Rockette are good pieces to build upon. Our primary concern is the pass rush as nobody with more than two sacks LY returns for battle.

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Diego Guajardo comes back off a fine 2020 season (13-17 FG, 2-2 50+) and P Jack Brooks had an acceptable 37.6 yard net. They could definitely use some additional SPICE in the return game.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – Don’t ask us for a DRUG TEST, but we think it’s possible for the Jags to start 3-0. They have a stretch of three straight road games in November.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 12

Over 4.5 +105

Under 4.5 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

There’s a small handful of winnable games but they need to GIT ER DONE before November as their final contests are nasty (App St (A), Tennessee (A), Coastal Carolina (H). There’s more upside than downside with this team so we’d take a stab at the ‘over’ before we bet on misery.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Jags have still not tasted bowl victory. They’re 0-2 so far. Maybe this is the year?

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This is a tough call. They’ll need to get off to a good start and build some confidence before heading into Sun Belt play. Snagging Jake Bentley at QB was a POWER MOVE and they just need the defense to exceed expectations to make a run at a bowl game. Let’s do this!

Texas St Bobcats 2021 College Football Preview

Texas St Bobcats 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 2-10

ATS – 6-5-1

The Bobcats finished the season with a mere two wins BUT it’s worth noting that there were several CLOSE SHAVES along the way. They lost to SMU by 7, fell to UTSA in 2-OT, and fell to Boston College and Georgia Southern by a combined five points. If IFS AND BUTS were CANDY and NUTS, we’d all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS…..we get that…..but at least that shows these guys aren’t far off from being competitive. On to 2021.

Texas St Bobcats 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Bobcats got decent QB play out of Brady McBride and Tyler Vitt LY (combined 61%, 25-12 TD to INT) and both men are back for duty. Also note that they added a transfer from NC State (Ty Evans) to add depth. The Bobcats made fine strides in their rushing output per game LY (77 to 131) but still finished #6 in the Sun Belt (#96 FBS). We like the quality and depth at RB and expect even better things this year. Their top-3 RBs all return and note that they combined for well over 1,300Y and 13 rushing TDs in 2020 (Sturges, Hill, Jeter). They lose two of their top-3 WRs but Marcell Barbee had 10 (!) TD grabs and Javen Banks averaged 18.7 YPC. Four starters return up front but they need to replace their fine center Reece Jordan. LT Dalton Cooper is a good one. Texas St has an excellent shot at hitting 30 PPG for the first time since 2014.

DEFENSE

The stop unit was a major disappointment LY as they couldn’t stop the run (225 YPG, #9 Sun Belt),  had trouble defending the THROW GAME (#8 pass eff D, 26-7 TD to INT), and couldn’t get pressure on the QB (one sack/game; last SB). Things can only get better, AMIRITE? Nine starters return on this side of the ball including five of their six leading tacklers. We expect improvement up front with the return of their excellent DL Nico Ezidore (#3 tackles, #1 TFL with 13) and the addition of some interesting transfers. The LB group is a concern but they should be better on the back end with the return of every starter including CB Jarron Morris who led the team in tackles (!), PBU (11) and INTs (4) (!) and the addition of CB Eric Sutton from SMU, as well as safety Troy Lefeged from Utah St (100+ tackles, 2 sacks in 2019).

SPECIAL TEAMS

They look set in the kicking game with the return of P Seamus O’Kelly (38.5 net) and PK Seth Keller who was 8-9 on FGA and only missed one XP. They need to reload at KR and PR.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They should get off to a good start before FUN BELT games begin and could realistically start the year at 3-1. They draw Coastal Carolina from the East but miss Appalachian St. Their final two games are on the road.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Eastern Michigan (September 25th)

This could be a lookahead spot to conference play and the Eagles will be able to SCORE THE FOOTBALL on pretty much anyone.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 12

Over 4.5 +135

Under 4.5 -155

update August 25

Over 4.5 +105

Under 4.5 -115

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Texas St has a legit shot to get to six wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Texas St has yet to make a bowl game and haven’t won more than three games since 2014 when they went 7-5.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

If handicapping TALES and LORE are to be believed, teams often show a lot of improvement in year three of a new regime. The defense is still a bit sketchy but we expect a nice move forward in the win column in year three of the JAKE SPAVITAL EXPERIMENT. They’ll be able to score on anyone in the conference and just need to win a few close games. Dare we say, “Bowl Game” ?

Georgia Southern Eagles 2021 College Football Preview

Georgia Southern Eagles 2021 College Football Preview

July 14, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 8-5

ATS – 8-5

The Eagles quietly put together a solid campaign and won eight games. While it’s true that they didn’t beat anyone with a pulse (Campbell, ULM, UMass, South Alabama, Troy, Texas St, FAU, La Tech) it’s important to note that they gave teams like Louisiana, Appalachian St, and Army all they could handle (Iost by combined 11 points). They finished the plandemic campaign with a BLOWOUT win over the Bulldogs in the New Orleans Bowl (W 38-3).

Georgia Southern Eagles 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Eagles moved like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE on the ground (as per usual) LY and rolled for 267 YPG (#5 FBS). Opposing DCs aren’t gonna get much sleep looking at the DEEP RB room that Georgia Southern will bring to the table in 2021. Three of their top four RBs are back for battle (King, Wright, Green) and they combined for almost 1,500Y and 11 TDs LY. AND, they add Tulane transfer Amare Jones to the mix. They’ll miss the leadership and rushing ability of QB Shai Werts who’s off to LUA-VUH but the hope is that Justin Tomlin can fill the void (44%; 218 rush LY, 5.2). They don’t utilize the THROW GAME very often but do have at least two decent targets in WR Khaleb Hood (224, 14.9, 2 TD) and TE Beau Johnson (16.8, 2 TD). The OL looks to be in good shape with four starters and over 100 career starts returning.

DEFENSE

Yes, guy. That was a fine performance a season ago and they ended up ranked #1 in the Sun Belt in total defense (326 YPG) and #3 in scoring defense (20.8 PPG). There’s reason to be a bit concerned heading into 2021 as they lose some key components to the stop unit, particularly at LB where #1 tackler Rashad Byrd (6.5 TFL) and Reynard Ellis (6.5 TFL, #3 tackler) need to be replaced. They also lose star DE Raymond Johnson who booked 14.5 TFL (!) and an impossible 15 QBH LY. The good news is that they add multiple Power 5 transfers at LB and return every starter in the secondary including 1st Team Sun Belt CB Derrick Canteen who had 6 (!) INTs LY. They still look to be a solid group but will likely be down a notch.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Eagles will need to get better performance out of P Anthony Beck and the coverage team (35.4 net) and PK Alex Raynor who made just 3/8 FG from 40+. Khaleb Hood booked a PR TD LY.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The non-conference docket isn’t easy (at FAU, at Hogs, BYU). They start FUN BELT action with the nasty Cajuns and face Coastal Carolina (H) and Appalachian St (A) in November.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 14

Over 4.5 -145

Under 4.5 +125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

There are some tough games to be sure, but we forecast them cobbling together 5+ wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Eagles led the FBS in takeover last year with 26. And get this. They have a turnover margin of +39 since 2018.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Georgia Southern has been REALLY good over the past three seasons posting a record of 25-14. They deserve a lot of credit for that success but note that the FUN BELT is getting tougher and tougher every year. They’ll be able to run the ball down most teams’ throats but may take a step back on defense. We’ll call for bowl eligibility but don’t think they have the MINERALS to win the East division.

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 2021 College Football Preview

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 10-1

ATS – 5-6

Yes, guy.

T’was a YUUUGE year for the Cajuns as they picked up three impressive road wins (Iowa St, UAB, Appalachian St), won the Sun Belt West for the third consecutive season, and took down the scrappy UTSA Roadrunners in the First Responder Bowl. Sadly, the Sun Belt Championship Game was cancelled and we were denied a SPICY rematch with Coastal Carolina.

Louisiana Rajun’ Cajuns 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

Louisiana averaged well over 30 PPG for the third consecutive season and finished the campaign averaging 213 YPG on the ground (#4 Sun Belt) and 209 YPG through the air (#8). QB Levi Lewis JUST WINS GAMES and is back for a final season after booking solid numbers in the TRUNCATED plandemic season (59.6%, 19-7 TD to INT, 5 rush TD). They’ll be challenged to replace the insane 1-2 RB combo of Elijah Mitchell and Trey Ragas (1600+ rush, 18 TD LY). Chris Smith appears ready to take the job as #1 RB but there is unproven depth behind him. The good news is that the WR group could be really SNEAKY good with the return of everyone of consequence from LY and note that RB Chris Smith caught 16 balls in 2020. The big boys are outstanding and should comprise the best OL in the conference. They paved the way for 5.46 YPC LY (#2 Sun Belt) and allowed just 9 sacks all year (#1 Sun Belt sacks allowed per game).

DEFENSE

The Cajuns fielded a great defense in 2019 (#2 total defense Sun Belt) and followed that up with another good job LY (355 YPG, #4 Sun Belt) whilst allowing just 22 PPG (#4 Sun Belt). Their pass defense was particularly stingy as they allowed just 52% (!) completions and finished #1 in the conference in pass efficiency D (10-16 TD to INT). Essentially everyone is back and they’ll be one of the best stop units in the conference once again, particularly on the back end where they return every starter. Opposing QBs beware! The front seven has decent pieces including LBs Lorenzo McCaskill and Ferrod Gardner (top-two tacklers, 6.5 sacks combined). They just need to stiffen up the run D (185 YPG, #8 Sun Belt) and get more of a pass rush (#7 sacks/game Sun Belt LY).

SPECIAL TEAMS

Looks pretty good, yo. PK Kenneth Almendares was 5/5 on FGA LY and P Rhys Burns was a 2nd team Sun Belt honoree. The Cajuns returned three kicks for TDs LY (2 KO, 1 PR).

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They start with a WHOPPER at Texas to open the season but let’s not forget what they did to an excellent Iowa St team in LY’s opener. They miss Coastal Carolina from the East and get Appalachian St at home.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Liberty (November 20th)

The Flames look to be a tough out and this is a sandwich spot (Troy, ULM).

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 12

Over 9.5 +125

Under 9.5 -145

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

They’re capable of running the table in conference play and should be favored in at least 10 of their final 11 games.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

Billy Napier has a record of 28-11 with Louisiana. The last HC to finish their tenure with a winning record in Lafayette was Russ Faulkinberry (66-63-2; 1961-1973).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

It’s hard to imagine HC Billy Napier not getting scooped up by a major program after this season. He’s 3/3 in booking division crowns, BUT, note that there is still UNFINISHED business as they are 0/2 in the Sun Belt Championship Game. Darn those dastardly Appalachian St doods! We expect them to cruise to another West title and face the emerging JUGGERNAUT from Coastal Carolina for all the marbles. Let’s go!

Georgia St Panthers 2021 College Football Preview

Georgia St Panthers 2021 NCAA Football Preview

Created July 14, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 6-4

ATS – 7-3

The Panthers booked their 3rd winning season in the last four years and finished in style by smoking Western Kentucky in the Lending Tree Bowl (39-21). Of their four losses, the only one that featured a deficit of more than 7 points, was the Coastal Carolina DEBACLE in which they got totally hammered (L 51-CACK). They gave Louisiana and Appalachian St all they could handle and have to be heading into 2021 with confidence. Let’s go!

Georgia St Panthers 2020 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Panthers scored more than 30 PPG for the 2nd consecutive season (33.3, #4 Sun Belt) behind the dynamic play of QB Cornelius Brown who threw 17 TD passes and rushed for another 7 on the ground. He threw a few too many INTs (10) and will need to cut down on mistakes. Depth behind him looks acceptable. The Panthers 1-2 combo at RB is one of the best in the conference as Destin Coates and Tucker Gregg combined for over 1,200Y and 13 TDs in 2020. The OL returns five starters and note that they allowed a paltry 12 sacks LY (#3 Sun Belt sacks/game). Everyone is back at WR and TE and Brown should have another good year in the THROW GAME. WR Sam Pinckney is is one of the best in the Sun Belt (47-815, 17.3, 7 TD) and Roger Carter caught 23 balls at TE. The Panthers seem like a CCP VIRUS DOUBLE MASK LOCK to post over 30 PPG once again.

DEFENSE

Georgia St were really strong vs the run a season ago (136 YPG, #2 Sun Belt) and average vs the pass (#5 pass efficiency D). Their CALLING CARD was an excellent pass rush that came up with an impressive 35 sacks (#1 Sun Belt, sacks per game). Leading sack producer Jordan Strachan tied for the FBS lead (10.5) and is going to be really tough to replace. The good news is that the DL looks stout and returns all three starters including DE Hardrick Willis (6 sacks LY). The LB group will miss Strachan but still appears to be talented and are led by leading tackler Blake Carroll (5.5 TFL). We expect good production on the back end of the defense as every starter is back for battle and they have some good ones in the mix including CB Quavian White and S Antavious Lane who combined for 7 INTs LY. The sack total will likely drop but this still appears to be an above average Sun Belt stop unit, particularly vs the run.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The entire group returns including PK Noel Ruiz who nailed 13/16 FGA in 2020. The punting and return units were average on the whole.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – The first five games are nasty as they take on Army (H), North Carolina (A), Auburn (A), and Appalachian St (H). Later in the year they play three straight ON THE HIGHWAY. At least they finish with two home games.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Louisiana (November 4th)

This is their 3rd road game in four and it comes after the rivalry game with Georgia Southern. Coastal Carolina is on deck.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 14

Over 5.5 +135

Under 5.5 -155

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

That’s a tough schedule, yo. Having said that, this team is still easily in the top half of the FUN BELT in terms of talent and we think it’s likely they’ll cobble together six wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbit

The Panthers booked a combined record of 2-33 (!) from 2012-2014 and have now made three bowl games in four years under HC Shawn Elliott. Well done!

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The schedule maker didn’t do this group any favors, particularly starting in late October when they have a really difficult three game road stretch (Georgia Southern, Louisiana, Coastal Carolina). These guys are gonna be a tough out in conference play and have the potential to post their best-ever offensive numbers. The defense may let them down but look for them to make another post-season appearance.

Appalachian St Mountaineers 2021 College Football Preview

College Football Predictions – Appalachian St Mountaineers 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 9-3

ATS – 3-8-1

The Mountaineers finished with a decent mark of 9-3 but it’s a tribute to the state of the program when that’s considered to be a disappointment. They lost to the JUGGERNAUT Chanticleers which put them behind the 8-ball and then lost another conference game later in the year when the Cajuns came to town (L 24-21). That was the first time these guys lost more than one conference game since 2014. They finished on a good note by mopping the floor with North Texas in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (W 56-28).

Appalachian St Mountaineers 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

There certainly wasn’t a problem with the rushing attack LY as the Mountaineers PULVERIZED their opposition to the tune of 265 YPG (#6 FBS). Bad news for Sun Belt foes. The top-3 RBs all return and they combined for over 2,200 (!) yards and 22 rushing TDs in 2020. Camerun Peoples led the way with 1,124 yards and 12 scores. THE HITS KEEP COMING when you consider that they add Notre Dame transfer Jahmir Smith the mix. The 78 MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION is what kind of QB play will they get? They’ve been spoiled for a long time with efficient QB play (Z Thomas, T Lamb) and now it’ll likely be up to Duke transfer Chase Brice to lead the way (55%, 10 TD…..15 INT LY). Brice will have everyone of consequence back at TE and WR and note that star WR Corey Sutton is also in the mix (opt out LY, 17 TDs 2018-2019). The Mountaineers lose some serious talent on the OL and return just a pair of starters to the group.

DEFENSE

The defense definitely showed up AGAIN last season and they were particularly stingy vs opposing THROW GAMES. They finished #4 in the FBS (!) in pass efficiency defense and allowed just 48% completions whilst booking a fine 13-15 TD to INT ratio. It’s nitpicking, but the run D was a bit soft as they allowed more than 4 YPC and 150 YPG for the first time since 2014. Ten starters return on D and they have solid players at each level of the defense. DE Demetrius Taylor led the team in sacks a season ago and booked 13 TFL and 8 QBH. LBs D’Marco Jackson and Brendan Harrington were both in the T5 in tackles, and the secondary is loaded with an experienced safety tandem and ace CB Shaun Jolly. This stop unit is ROCK solid.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The Mountaineers could use more consistency out of PK Chandler Staton who made 13-19 FGs in 2020. P Xavier Subotsch had an impressive 40.0 yard net. KR Jalen Virgil returned a kickoff to the HIZZY JIZZY WIZZY in 2020.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They have an intriguing road game at YOUR Miami Hurricanes and have a revenge game with Marshall in non-conference play. Their first three FUN BELT games are tough (at Georgia St, at Louisiana, Coastal Carolina).

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – Nothing heinous noted.

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes July 12

Over 9 +105

Under 9 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

We have them pegged at 9-3 and think this is the right number. Would go ‘over’ 8.5 if you can find one out there but we seriously doubt it.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Appalachian St is an impressive 6-0 in bowl games. Straight FIRE, yo.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

The Mountaineers definitely have a roster capable of scooping up the Sun Belt Championship, but to be fair, it won’t be as easy as in the “old days”. Coastal Carolina is a JUGGERNAUT and Louisiana is really good. They also have to break in a new QB and it’s still not clear what to expect from HC Shawn Clark. The Coastal Carolina match-up on October 20th will be MUST SEE TV.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2021 College Football Preview

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 11, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 11-1

ATS – 8-4

Yes, guy. That was fun.

The Chanticleers rattled off a PERFECT regular season (11-0) that included wins over Louisiana, Appalachian St, and BYU. The win over the Cougars was one of the best games of the year and BYU came within feet of winning the game on the last play. Sadly, the Sun Belt Championship Game was called off, and the Chanticleers were declared co-champs along with the Ragin’ Cajuns. Coastal Carolina and Liberty treated us to a great Cure Bowl and the Flames ruined Coastal’s perfect season with a 37-34 OT win.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

Grayson McCall was one of the best QBs in all of college football LY and put up phenomenal numbers in leading his team to an 11-1 record. McCall had an insane 26-3 TD to INT ratio and completed 69% of his passes at 10 (!) yards per attempt. He also rushed for 569 yards and 7 TDs. McCall has his top-3 targets returning including WR Jaivon Heiligh (998, 15.4, 10 TD) and the impossibly-talented TE Isaiah Likely who averaged 20 (!) YPC on 30 grabs (5 TD). Losing CJ Marable at RB is a yuuuuge blow (887, 12 TD; 31 receptions, 7 TD) (!) and he’ll be tough to replace. The good news is that the #2 and #3 RBs (White, Jones) rushed for over 1,000 (!) yards and 13 TDs. The entire starting offensive line is back and they will have another fantastic season. They paved the way for 5.1 YPC LY (#4 Sun Belt) whilst allowing a mere 14 sacks (#2 sacks/game Sun Belt). The Chanticleers should be balanced and dangerous once again in 2021.

DEFENSE

Coastal Carolina was strong on this side of the ball as well LY as they ranked #3 in the Sun Belt in total defense (352 YPG) and #2 in scoring defense (20.3 PPG). They banked 34 (!) sacks and forced 25 turnovers (both #2 Sun Belt). Ten starters return on D but the only omission is their fine DE Tarron Jackson who led the team in sacks LY (8.5) whilst registering a mind-boggling 18 QBH. Jackson was named Sun Belt DPOY and is off to the NFL (Eagles). As hard as it is to believe, they still have the best DL in the conference with the return of 3rd Team AA DT CJ Brewer (6.5 sacks), DE/LB Jeffrey Gunter (6.5 sacks, 12 QBH) and the addition of transfer Manny Johnson from Georgia Tech. Leading tackler Silas Kelly is back at LB and the secondary returns every starter including 1st Team Sun Belt member CB D’Jordan Strong. They also add some interesting transfers to make this unit even stronger.

SPECIAL TEAMS

The kicking game is in good shape with the return of PK Massimo Biscardi (11/13 FG LY) and senior punter Charles Ouverson (37.6 net). Their return game was MEH in 2020 but you know they have the athletes on board to GIT ER DONE.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – It’s CHARMIN SOFT. They miss Louisiana from the West and the non-conference slate should be a cakewalk.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at Arkansas St (October 7th)

The only game that matters is the following week (at Appalachian St) and the Red Wolves are capable of SCORING the FOOTBALL.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 12

Over 10 +105

Under 10 -125

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Not much room for error but it’s hard to see this team losing three regular season games and smoking your wager.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

In addition to overwhelming the opposition with RAW TALENT the Chanticleers played smart in 2020. They were +13 in turnover margin (#1 FBS), #8 in TOP (33:50), and #6 in penalty yards/game.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

It’s Sun Belt Championship or BUST. This team is absolutely loaded and the schedule shouldn’t be a problem. The October visit to Boone, North Carolina LOOMS LARGE as the winner of that game will be a yuuuuge favorite to win the Sun Belt West division.

Good luck, Chanticleers!

Troy Trojans 2021 College Football Preview

College Football Predictions – Troy Trojans 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 14, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 5-6

ATS – 5-6

The Trojans started out in good shape winning four of their first six games, and that included BLOWOUT wins over MTSU, Texas St, and Arkansas St. Not exactly MURDERERS ROW, but wins are wins, buh buh. They struggled down the stretch and lost four of their final five games BUT did give the JUGGERNAUT Chanticleers a run for their money (L 42-38).

Let’s see how the roster shapes up heading into 2021.

Troy Trojans 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Trojans were one-dimensional on offense LY (#117 rush, #21) and it’s really difficult to win when the ground game is that pathetic. They have a pair of capable QBs in Gunnar Watson and Jacob Free (combined 22-12 TD to INT LY) to build the offense around and add an interesting QB transfer in Taylor Powell from Missouri. Keep an eye on fall camp and see how things develop. Sadly, Troy loses three of their top four pass catchers from the 2020 squad. WR Reggie Todd led the team with 6 TD receptions but they’ll likely have to rely on JUCOs and youngsters to emerge in 2021. We expect a MUCH improved performance from the RB room as five starters return for an OL that boasts really good talent at C (Dylan Bradshaw) and LT Austin Stidham. The RB unit itself is extremely deep with the return of #1 rusher Kimani Vidal (516, 4 TD) and note that BJ Smith had over 1,100 yards rushing in 2018, and DK Billingsley rushed for 901 yards in 2019. Expect a more balanced attack in 2021.

DEFENSE

The stop unit was decent LY as they ended up #5 in the Sun Belt in both total defense (405 YPG) and scoring defense (25.7 PPG). Their top-12 tacklers are back on this side of the football including the entire starting front seven. They have a legit star in LB Carlton Martial (1st Team Sun Belt) who led the team in tackles (113) (!) as well as TFL (10) LY and DT Will Choloh is a force inside (7.5 TFL). The front seven also features DE/LB Richard Jibunor ( 7 TFL, 5 QBH) as well as a few P5 transfers. Three starters return in the secondary and they’ll need to do a better job. They’ve allowed 67.0% and 66.5% completions the past two years. An improved pass rush would help (22 sacks LY, #4 Sun Belt sacks per game).

Special Teams

Yikes. They’ll need to replace their excellent P Jack Martin who left to win championships with ROLL TIDE and have to find a new PK.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – They have a shot to start the season 3-0 in non-conference action but will have to get by a tough Liberty squad in week 2. At least they get them at home. They have a 5/6 game road stretch (!) starting in week 3 and have to face Coastal, Louisiana and Appalachian St in a four week span.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – South Alabama (November 6th)

This is a rivalry game (BATTLE FOR THE BELT) and is sandwiched between two yuuuge match-ups (Chants, Cajuns).

Season Win Total

Per 5Dimes July 14

Over 6.5 -145

Under 6.5 +125

MEGALOCKS says:

No leanage.

That’s a sharp number, yo. We have them pegged at 6-7 wins.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

The Trojans lost four games last year by a TD or less, and three of those came vs solid squads (Georgia St, Georgia Southern, Coastal Carolina).

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

This is an interesting team playing in a very competitive and improving division. They don’t appear to be good enough to take down the division but they’re MORE than capable of SHOCKING the WORLD at least once during the campaign. See you in bowl season.

ULM Warhawks 2021 College Football Preview

ULM Warhawks 2021 College Football Preview

Created July 12, 2021

2020 Recap

Record – 0-10

ATS – 3-7

WHOA, NELLIE. That wasn’t pretty.

The Warhawks sputtered and gagged their way to an 0-10 record and lost every game except one (Georgia Southern) by at least 18 points. They were outscored in their final two contests by a combined score of 118-35. We knew it’d be a tough season, but it was still a bit surprising to see them go winless on the year. Let’s see what new HC Terry Bowden has to work with in 2021.

ULM Warhawks 2021 Outlook

OFFENSE

The Warhawks were able to MATRICULATE the ball down the field in the THROW GAME at times LY (229 YPG, #65 FBS) but had one of the worst rushing attacks in the FBS (76 YPG). Both Colby Suits and Jeremy Hunt are back at QB (combined 14-11 TD to INT) and they add a very interesting transfer in Rhett Rodriguez from Arizona (!) who will be given every chance to win the starting job. He should have an advantage given that he’s familiar with the new offense being installed by Rich Rodriguez. Yes, THAT Rich Rodriguez. It’s unclear what they have at RB given the departure of #1 RB Josh Johnson (1,298 yards, 11 TD in 2019, NFL-Seahawks). Their fine TE Josh Pederson is off to the NFL but the everyone of consequence is back in the WR room and we expect decent production. There are also some interesting transfers being added to the mix. Only three starters return up front and that’s a major concern given the trouble they had running the football LY. They also allowed 27 sacks in 10g (#7 Sun Belt, sacks allowed per game). We project over 20 PPG (16.3 LY) as Rich ROD should be able to squeeze a bit more out of the offense.

DEFENSE

ULM got rolled by opposing ground games (249 YPG, last Sun Belt) and didn’t fare much better vs the THROW GAME in 2020 (last Sun Belt pass efficiency D, 9.9/attempt, 20-4 TD to INT). They only booked 13 sacks in 10 games which placed them 8th in the conference on a per-game basis. There’s some hope this season with a few good pieces to build around. The have a pair of really good safeties in Austin Hawley and Jabari Johnson who both finished in the T3 in tackles LY whilst booking a combined 7 TFL and an INT. LB Traveion Webster led the team in tackles LY and they get a fine Power 5 transfer in LB Ja’Cquez Williams who led Wake Forest in tackles in 2020 (#2 2019). The biggest concern is up front where the size and talent appears limited. We should see a bit of improvement in 2021.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Danger! Danger!

The Warhawks need to break in a new PK as well as a new P. They were very poor in the return game in 2020. Fun fact – They allowed an impossible four blocked punts LY. Hopefully, transfer PK Calum Sutherland (Oklahoma) (!) can provide some consistency in the FG department.

Schedule Analysis

Overall – As you can imagine prospects for the non-conference slate are dire but at least they get to face something called Jacksonville St in week two. They draw a road game with the Chanticleers and note they only have one home game after October 23rd.

Potential ATS Trouble Spot – at LSU (November 20th)

Not a spot we’ll likely be backing the Warhawks, even considering they’ll be catching a ton of points. LSU has bigger fish to try BUT this will be ULM’s 3rd road game in four weeks and they have the rivalry game with Louisiana on deck. BLOODBATH incoming.

Season Win Total

per 5Dimes July 12

Over 1.5 +130

Under 1.5 -150

MEGALOCKS says:

Lean: Over.

Assuming they get past Jacksonville St that means pulling just one upset in Sun Belt play. Worth a shot at plus money. Maybe.

MEGAmazing Tidbits

Per the amazing Phil Steele mag, ULM didn’t lead for a single SECOND during 2020.
ULM’s last winning season was back in 2012 (8-5). That was a very entertaining squad featuring all-timer Kolton Browning who led them to a SHOCKER over WOO PIG SOOIE on the road at Arkansas (W 34-31 in OT). They were 6-7 on 4th downs in that classic.

MEGALOCKS Outlook:

Terry Bowden did an amazing job with the Akron Zips not that long ago and this task looks just as daunting. There’s definitely enough talent to bag a win or two, but it’s hard to expect much more in the short term. Brick by brick, yo.
